Synopsis
Tamura Masakazu plays the single father of four daughters (Iijima Naoko, Nakatani Miki, Hirosue Ryoko and Fukada Kyoko).

Having raised his daughters alone for the past 10 years, he's lost sight of their needs and instead reverts to yelling and lecturing them. All four daughters, each with their own unique personalities, start rebelling in their own way, especially when their father decides to remarry a woman they have never met.

1. Better Than I Thought [Rating: 8/10]
I was turned off by this drama right away for numerous reasons. 1) It stars Tamura Masakazu, who I find annoying given my limited experience with him, 2) the show seemed almost identical to Oyaji, and 3) the plot was very boring in the first few episodes. I didnft find it terrible. It just seemed really dull.

Near the middle of the drama my opinion changed. There are two huge factors that differentiate this drama from Oyaji. One is the amazing set of characters that make up the fatherfs daughters, and the other are the actresses who play them.

Tamura aside, the casting was great. I love Iijima Naoko and her character ended up being my favourite. Although I found Nakatani Mikifs character a little boring, as an actress I was really impressed and look forward to watching more of her dramas. Ifve only ever enjoyed Hirosue Ryoko in Summer Snow, but I can now add this drama to her list. Fukada Kyoko maintained her pouty, talentless disposition, but she was the perfect spoiled brat and so I think she was appropriately class. If anything, shefs kawaii and can play the piano beautifully.

The plot was very cookie-cutter, but this doesnft matter. It was just fun to watch the characters be who they are and observe them interacting with each other. I can only imagine what it was like on set with such charismatic female talents.

2. Good Family Drama [Rating: 8/10]
Despite the cheesy intro and Tamura Masakazu's haminess being annoying for the first handful of episodes, this is otherwise an excellent drama. Tamura's acting improves after you get past the first few episodes. This drama was both funny and heartwarming. All of the daughters as well as Tamura's character all matured real nicely by the end of the drama. This was a good drama about an initially immature father ignoring his own daughters' needs and their own immaturity, which eventually leads to all of them maturing really well. This series had an excellent cast of actors and actresses such as Iijima Naoko, Hirosue Ryoko, Fukada Kyoko, and Tsukamoto Takashi. Many times I've been dissapointed in a drama that has a great cast such as Good Luck!! but failed due to bland story writing, but not this one. This one was really well written and used its cast to its maximum potential.

3. Sort of a sequel ot Oyaji [Rating: 9/10]
The basic concept isn't too different from OYAJI, a drama that was plotted so uniquely that you can't tell what's going to happen next. OTOUSAN isn't quite as inventive, but it's hard to ignore its taut pacing and bevy of strong actors. Ryoko Hirosue is wonderful at comedy, but her role as a harried, unconfident nurse is as memorable as Miki Nakatani's as an older sister who wants to change her life's role.

The players are almost uniformly attractive (aside from the comic foils), and plot would get ungainly if not the fact that the various conflicts manage to balance out quite nicely. Perhaps not an exact sequel to OYAJI, but the formula has been duplicated admirably.

If you look very carefully, you'll even find a few performances by performers who would become very big in their own rights.

4. Oyaji cont'd [Rating: 9/10]
Excellent family dorama feeling very much like a continuation of Oyaji. With another top-notch cast of Iijima Naoko, Nakatani Miki, Tamura Masakazu and Hirosue Ryoko, what's there not to like? The music was rather interesting with a latin-esque flair and the plot was different enough from Oyaji to keep my interest but with enough similarities on many of the strong points to make this dorama just as enjoyable. Two thumbs up!

5. Better than Oyaji [Rating: 7/10]
Kind of an Oyaji II. Otousan is a bit better though, I think. The story and the characters are more intersting to follow and there are more emotional moments in this one. To run a sobashop is also more original than beeing a doctor. Can't be easy to be the father of 4 daughters...scary.
Well, you get the usual family drama, tears, joy, disagreements, reconciliation and with the happy end.
7,5 is my exact rating.

6. ok... [Rating: 8/10]
The first 4 episodes were slow.... but then the pace picked up. I stayed with it only because one of my favorites Fukada Kyoko is in it. I was not disappointed in her interpretation of the part she was playing. Actually, all the girls were terrific. and the father was superb. Can only give it an 8 though because it takes determination to stay with it for the first 4 episodes.

7. Pretty Good [Rating: 8/10]
This is probably a sequel to Oyajii, which also starred Tamura Masakazu and Hirosue Ryoko. Otousan was less light-hearted but was equally entertaining. How can you not like a drama with Iijima Naoko, Nakatani Miki, Hirosue Ryoko and Fukada Kyoko. I highly recommend this one.

a very solid 8, this series. very well produced. at first, i have to admit, i only got it to see fukuda and Iijima-san. but as the story developed, i really got into it. there were a couple of places that were a bit predictable, but in what doramas there aren't any? :)

I found myself fast-forwarding through almost every episode. Ryoko Hirosue's character is very interesting. Liked how she changed in the end. That was the only reason I watched till the end.

if i hadn't watched oyaji, i'd probably give this a higher rating... so watch this show before giving oyaji a go.
the characters here are less likeable. in oyaji, it was reasonable for the children to rebel against their extremist dad, but here, the daughters seem to rebel without much cause. i also did not like kyoko fukada's character nor did i understand her problems. less chemistry between all the actors and the characters' problem seem too trivial. my fave would have to be ryoko hirosue who ironically was my least fave in oyaji.
2. Comments by Zie75 [Rating: 10/10]
this father daughter story remind me to my father a lot which he did not like the idea of all his daughers stay away from him but time goes by especially when the daughters thinks that marriage is the easiest way to go out from home which turn to be the worst idea. each of the daughter did not understand the way of caring and love that the father gave which end up quarrel among each other. the thing is the father (mother) know the children very well....ya..i agree 100%. i cried when watched this drama...i miss my otousan....
3. Comments by kartanoman [Rating: 10/10]
Another funny Tamura Masakazu dorama that pairs him with Ryoko Hirosue again (from Oyaji) and other fine performers that has a story plot that generally goes along the lines as Oyaji with a different family make-up. This dorama influenced my wife and I to try buckwheat soba (excellent, by the way)! Had a chuckle when Tamura and Ryoko Moriyama were singing the theme song to Oyaji (i.e. "Sayonara Daisukina Hito" by Hana Hana) in the koraoke house! Bottom line: if you enjoyed Oyaji, you'll like this one!
4. Comments by DragonSpirit164 [Rating: 8/10]
Hmmm, enjoyable drama even though it is a little too slow moving for my liking. Storyline is similar to that of Oyaji, about a father taking care of his family, but this time without a wife. Naturally, the family gets into as many mishaps as possible along the way haha.. Shoulda got a 7 from me, but the star studded cast of Iijima Naoko, Nakatani Miki, Hirosue Ryoko and Kyoko Fukada was a joy to watch. Not as good as Oyaji IMO, but nice to watch nevertheless..
5. Comments by Shindou [Rating: 9/10]
Almost an exact replica of Oyaji. Despite that, judging by the acting and the story/acting, this series is deserving of an 8.5, just like Oyaji. Excellent acting once again by Tamura Masakazu and Hirosue Ryoko and Iijima Naoko and Nakatani Miki were great additions to the cast. Music was light-hearted and fun and there were plenty of things happening in the plot to keep you entertained.

Heart-warming...sentimental plot, especially between Shindo and Anzai -- the picture would have been better if he just cracked a smile ne ne?? I really like Outousan ^.^

I can relate to Makoto's and Akira's story in some ways -- everyone can relate to the four daughters' stories somehow...such a good quality to have in order to make a series give that "umph" effect *_^
7. Comments by tsuyoshi7nhwi [Rating: 10/10]
Probably the most star-studded cast I've ever seen: Tamura Masakazu, Iijima Naoko, Nakatani Miki, Hirosue Ryoko AND Fukada Kyoko. Whew! A heart-warming story about a widower (Tamura) and his four, very different daughters. All I can say is, watching this made me want to thank my parents and let them know I love them. Oh, and the song, "Clover," by Cune is AWESOME.
8. Comments by jo [Rating: 7/10]
AN A+ CAST but a D- Script! Pretty weak on story, I wonder why those four actresses even accepted this drama(maybe they got paid more).Funny at times but I thought the story was just circling around some simple things. Which is kinda sad that they couldn't come up with a better story for each sisters in this drama. Hirosue was FUNNY though! so that's a positive^_^.
9. Comments by Makoto [Rating: 10/10]
I watched this summer of 2003 while I was living with my father. (Before Asahi Homecast ruined their schedual and were playing Dorama or something else cool EVERY night! ;_;) I found that I could relate to the girls, especially about being protective of their Dad. Was really cute and really fun to watch, Glad I got to see it.

Wow, talk about 4 beautiful daughters (Iijima Naoko, Nakatani Miki, Hirosue Ryoko, Fukada Kyoko)! I'd give Otousan an 8.5/10 if possible. Good family drama, brings up a lot of issues relating to choosing one's path in life and following your dreams and making sacrifices. Lunch at Miyuki Soba sounds good, ne?
11. Comments by moonchyld [Rating: 6/10]
has an all-star cast.. but the story is pretty predictable as it is quite a cliche family drama... if u like the cast, then watch it and see the diff kind of roles the stars portray (e.g. hirosue as an inert and submissive girl)..but other than that, it doesn't have much to offer.
12. Comments by nagaioyasumi [Rating: 7/10]
A nice family show but sometimes a little too melodramatic. Loved the hilarious Makoto and Hide subplot, but Kei's self-conceit really got on my nerves. Is it just me, or did FukaKyo's make-up seem very weird when she worked at the nightclub? Her eyebrows looked funny.
13. Comments by Qky [Rating: 9/10]
A very nice drama about an ordinary life of a family (pretty similar to Oyaji). so touching and tear-jerker. i definitely recommend this one, not to mention, there are four babes in one drama! :P.. Plus a great acting by Tamura Masakazu makes this drama a must-see one.

Ah the classic dad tamaru Masakazu. I liked him better in Oyaji but with 4 beautiful ladies, how can anyone not like this drama!?!? A strong plot and good acting, maybe too many stars and not enough screen time though.

Very nice, every character have their own personality, and the father had lot of problems to handle. When there is problem caused by a daughter he had to settle, there will be another problem caused by the other.
