Synopsis
The 31st NHK Asadora Drama is Oshin.

Oshin tells the story of a girl born into a very poor rural family in Japan, who through hard work and perseverance eventually triumphs over pain and adversity to achieve fame and success.

Broadcast in the early 1980s when Japan had finally cast off the legacy of the post-war years and the Japanese were beginning to reap the benefits of economic development, the aim of the story was to recall the hardships the older generation had endured in order to pave the way for their children. Viewers were drawn to the suffering of the main character Oshin - and then drew similarities between her story and their own home lives.

1. A classic [Rating: 10/10]
Oshin pushes beyond "classic" into the realm of "phenomenon." This story of a woman's life from poor child to prominence captures Japan as it moves through series of trials that always seem intimate and, very often, melancholy.

It originally aired in 297 episodes over the period of one year. No Japanese drama has approached Oshin in terms of its world popularity. It grabs you and won't let go.

i used to watch this series with my mom when it was shown back years ago in my country. it was shown half way through then it stopped. they continued after a few years, sadly my mom passed away before they start showing it again.

But this dorama is the best... out of all dorama or any other tv series i ever watched and i just got it with englis sub (after all this years).

NKH 297 Episodes x 15 mins. each. Wonderful acting - so natural. Nazukashi ~nostalgic feelings. A look at the hardships of being poor. Lil Oshin wa totemo kawaii~with the cutest rosey red cheeks. It's fun watching her. When spoken to, she always listens attentively with interest~eye contact. Enter 16 year old Oshin - very well mannered in moral&etiquette. Kayo hasn't changed. :D Oshin hits Tokyo - new work, changes in her personal life, and eps. filled with smiles&laughter. Oshin is even quite silly at times. :p Late teens/early 20s continues with struggles of work and family life. There's a long run of eps. that'll anger and exhaust many. It did me and although I'm not sure keeping the viewer in such an angry state for so long is good viewing, it's addicting (as is this whole drama anyways). As we near the 200 mark, we'll be reminded of a lil Oshin again! and again, tears of joy. The series will touch all emotions, from sadness to laughter to anger. Nakamura Masatoshi (early eps.) delivers some really powerful lines that are moving ~kurushi~tsurai~kanashi.

(Edit after watching years later a 2nd time). The first go-around, little Oshin had captured my heart. But after watching it again, it's definitely Tanaka Yuko who makes this drama.

Elder Oshin covers her rise in business and the lives of her now grown children. A lot of back and forth bickering with her son Hitoshi on business decisions/personal life (both can be annoying and each take blame). The third act is forgettable at times - not to say it's not entertaining, just more people being covered and the consequences not as dire.

Regardless, this still stands as my all-time favorite Japanese drama. The drama is up and down throughout (tears of sadness/joy go back and forth) so it moves and keeps it entertaining.

Note: Lil Oshin (Eps. 1-36). Young lady to middle years (Eps.37-225). Later years (Eps. 226 - 297).

The most famous Japanese drama ever. Does it deserve to be. I think it needs to be watched while remembering the era in which it aired. The time when Japan was at its best economically, but while people were still alive to recall much harder times. This show was about people crawling up from the bottom all the way up. Mostly the thing to say about this is that it's long. I have never watched anything that really felt like it was depicting someone's entire life. It's neat, but the constantly changing cast is jarring, and makes it a bit hard to feel they are the same people rather than disconnected stories.

Before I had watched this, I was familiar with the famous scene of young Oshin crying for her mother on a raft. It was surprising to actually see how small a part her entire young life really was to the whole story. There were time periods I really liked, and others I despised. I am always put off by historical stories that are narrated by the characters when they are old in the present, but when I realized it was actually connecting itself back to the present time I was quite amazed really. I think I can see why this was such a phenomenon in its time, and how it could serve as a bridge between a truly profound generational gap, but being born well after that gap, I just don't find it anywhere near as good as my favorite morning dramas. Though in all fairness, they may not have been as good, or even exist, if it wasn't for the foundation laid by Oshin.

This was the very first drama which I have seen. It's still so vividly clear to me. Oshin charater is a very strong will person who is determined when she set out her goal. This will be one of the classic in my list.

My very first Japanese drama. I don't think I saw all of it but saw the early episodes when Oshin was still young. I remember loving her dearly and feeling sorry for her at the same time. Wow, that was back in 1994!

I watched only about 30 or so episodes of this in India when I was a kid. I really liked it and I want to find out if there is an affordable way to get all 297 episodes of this classic on vcd or dvd.

Nothing compared to this one and only morning dramas ever aired. It dubbed in so many languages and nobody could even remember. My country, Indonesia, is one of them. The dramas took away people's attention as they had breakfast or as they prepared to go to work in the morning. The emotional and moral value of this story is so huge that it became, I think, the first Japanese drama that captured the attention of ppl in my country.

My 1st J-dorama! Didn't remember the stories because way back 20 years ago, but I remember it was very long, inspired, emotional and touching drama about love and life hardship. Have special slot in my memory becoz watching it with my beloved grandma who have passed away. Both my parent also used to love this J-drama. Must see!
