Great story, more the material of movies than doramas.
The story and actors are splendid, but don't expect a high-paced, funny and unrealistic dorama. This is serious work, but if you're up to it, it is a treat.

Apparently, the writer or director of this made some really great dramas and a lot of people were dissapointed. I can't comment on how it compares, but personally I loved it. It works so well as a three part drama, and has an epic quality that is similar to classic movies such as Gone with the Wind. It has some of the absolute best actors, all of whom are in perfectly suited roles, even Matsumoto Jun was able to somehow not suck a true first in world history. The last episode was definitely the weakest, which I swear happens in every three part drama I've ever seen. Also it's somewhat trivial, but I don't know if I like the whole gimmick where they meet all these famous people over the years; it probably would have been more serious and respectable without it. But regardless, I found it to be near masterpiece status.

A drama that I wanted to really like but ... just couldn't get into it ... maybe the pace was a little slow

Mostly pleasant and entertaining saga which depicts a troubled period in Japan. Cast was flawless.
