Synopsis
Deep within Edo Castle was the oh-oku (the inner palace)\the expansive living quarters for the wives and concubines of the Tokugawa Shogun. The entrance was under the tightest security, and the corridors were barred to all men except the Shogun himself. It is said that over 1,000 women lived in the oh-oku to serve the Shogun. For him, life in the oh-oku was like living in paradise.

Oh-oku is the story of the picturesque lives of the women living in the hidden, maze-like inner structure of Edo Castle. Inside, the women wielded their beauty and knowledge: some of them to win the Shogun's love, to obtain political power, or to climb the ladder of the oh-oku hierarchy. Their lives were filled with romance, hatred, anger, envy, tears, and persecution.

The previous Oh-oku series aired from June to August 2003, and focused on the last several years of the oh-oku history. It told the story of the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the oh-oku, and the lives of the women who lived through these times.

Oh-oku - Episode One- will be focusing on the birth of the inner palace. The 2nd Shogun Hidetada's wife Oeyo established the oh-oku. It was then enhanced and perfected by Kasuga-no-Tsubone, the nanny of the 3rd Shogun Iemitsu\also known as one of the most influential and powerful women in the oh-oku, and the main character of this drama. The story takes place in the Sengoku Era, also called the Warring States Period. Learn how the Shogun's women struggled to survive in the oh-oku\the prison for women.

1. Historical drama [Rating: 8/10]
I have yet to watch a japanese historical drama for a long, long time. the last time I attempted to watch one, the dialogue was too profound, probably because of the taiwanese translation.

But Ooku is a highly recommended historical drama. Although set in ancient japan, the Edo era, the drama has 'modern' elements. it is not just 'mindless' fightings between shogans..It is the complicated relationships amongst people in Oku that is the draw point.

Excellent! The lead actress is simply stunning, with all the other female stars dazzling with their beauty and acting. A stirring and exciting drama, where the men are not protagonists. Highly recommended! Ditch the soapy korean period dramas, those are nowhere as good as this one! Fast-paced, subtle, touching, exhilarating battles among women, with humorous little snippets injected everywhere. And did I mention that the women and their kimonos are glittering from beauty?

The main leading woman is annoying. Actually this is kind of boring compared to the first one. I am QUICKLY tiring of the same things going on and on all the time. Too much emphasis on the king's childhood, not enough on the women. Except the locked up one.....which was boring.

Jan 2005: This is actually the first japanese historical drama i've ever watched, this drama is fast paced, with intersting storyline, well how the girls fight for their status in Ooku, btw, hoshino mari is getting prettier, no more chubby face =D.

I saw some episodes of Narita Rikon and I can't believe Sato Asaka was in it!! She seems to be another one of these actresses whose face gains significant inches and area with time. (another representative is Shinohara Ryoko)

This is my first drama where the drama is not modern. I am so glued to this drama. No wonder it is a hit in Japan itself.
