I just watched the first episode too... Didn't really like it so far. It was kind of corny, and too much over glorifying the flight doctor. (though I guess that was to be expected...)
I also thought it lacked direction from focusing into all 4 fellowship students in separate events. It's possible the other 3 will give up becoming flight doctor and go into separate fields though.
I did think Yamashita was better than usual, but that may because I've always thought of him as absolutely horrible, and he was decent this time. Gakki was pretty bad... practically reading the script.
I noticed this in a recent SMAPxSMAP episode too, but Toda Erika seemed really grown up since I last saw her in Liar Game, and acquired some adult charm. Maybe it's just the perm, but I'm diggin' it
I'll watch another episode and see if it gets any better.
21.1% is almost certainly a first ep hype. I'd be very surprised if this series gets over 20% again other than the finale. _________________

That is true, most of Yamapi's drama so far had never gotten the rate of 20 in most of the episodes, except the finale. I can see that many people can find this drama to be boring and since there isn't enough romance to attract people? the rating will most likely decline.
The second episode will tell us all. You can't really predict the rating of a drama from the first episode yo~ |

I think you are forgetting the very purpose of the drama itself then.which is the glorification of doctors and people who save lives on a daily basis. This being the reason as to why they chose Yamapi as the lead just as the increase of lawyers and pilots transpired after Kimutaku dramas they want to repeat the same trend. People who watch the show and expect an idol drama with a man lead being pined for by half the population will of course be disappointed.
And just as you were lured due to your curiosity, there are many people who feels that way with that said, will continue to watch it... again you cant expect them to reveal so much in one episode.
{Im not quite sure as to why you would even dare say that he is "quite horrible" I don't say this as a fan but I feel when i first saw Byakkotai and Kurosagi eiga that he is very passionate about the roles he portray, sure he may not be the best as he is just beginning to polish his craft but to say he is horrible as if he is the worst or that you can do better, that's an insult not only to him but also to those who believe in his ability.} Now I ask you this, if you feel that he is "horrible" as an actor why to persist in watching his dramas?
True, maybe its because of curiosity that the drama peaked 21.2 % but usually drama's the poses curiosity only reaches 17.9 % so the drama reaching 20+ is indeed a great sign. Iryu 2 a previous drama also received high ratings despite its genre. Of course the ratings will be high given that this is no longer a typical idol drama, this is a drama that people from all cohorts can enjoy. I think people will remain drawn to the drama due to the mysteries that remains unfold and the first episode surely is a good start due to the contrast between the characters as well as the effectiveness of the doctor heli proposal which can change medical assistance as we know it. _________________

???? What the hell are you talking about?
The purpose of this drama, like all others, are to get good ratings so that they can charge premium for commercials to satisfy stakeholders.
It's true Japan, like rest of the world are short on qualified doctors, but increasing university application vs drama genre is just a side-effect. TV stations don't get subsidies for making doctor related dorama lol...
Just because it's about flight doctors doesn't mean they have to blatantly over glorify it like that. It's corny.
I couldn't care less if I dissed your favorite actor or whatever.
I am entitled to have an opinion just like everyone else, you don't have to agree with it. I didn't say he's the worst actor there is, nor he has zero potential to get better.
I watch many of his dramas (at least ep1) and many other ones starring actors I don't like because good story and direction can save series. Only one or two bad actors are almost never enough to make me stop watching a series. I didn't watch Byakkotai, and only watched Kurosagi until episode 2, where I gave up because story was crap. His acting was horrible. Before "Code Blue", the only one I thought he did well was "Nobuta. wo Produce" because the carefree role fits him better than his usual dark/cool character. "Propose Daisakusen" was so-so.
It makes me sick no one dare say anything bad about Johnny's members in drama or music forums anymore, because they'll end up getting flamed by fanatic fangirls and every Johnny's artist page is filled with crap like "oh he's so hot I want to marry him" or whatever.
And no, first episode rating is almost proportional to the total amount of promotion by the TV station, quality of cast, and how interesting the plot synopsis is. It'd have to be disastrous to make a viewer change channel in Ep1. Iryu2 is one of those series that got over 20% only in ep1.
By the way, romance have traditionally been a very hot dorama genre in Japan. They make less of it nowadays because primary target F1/F2 class audience (Females 20~50) work more and teens are more profitable for advertisers. Still, romance genre are at least as likely to get high ratings, and most series nowadays are romantic comedy. While the main character was a pilot, "Good Luck!!" is a romance genre drama more than anything else.
In the past 40 years, 7 of top 10 average ratings have been by romance genre series. Possibly more in top 30 since those 3 exceptions were HERO (Kimutaku) and GTO/Gokusen 2, both backed by manga fanbase.
Damn, I typed a lot. _________________

Sorry to barge into a conversation like this but for a person who was not planning to watch this drama but am curious how well it did I find your reaction to 8thSin casual comment / 1st episode review on the drama to be a little bit absurd.
"This being the reason as to why they chose Yamapi as the lead just as the increase of lawyers and pilots transpired after Kimutaku dramas they want to repeat the same trend."
To put Yamapi as an equal to Kimutaku is just way off. Kimura-san can act, have a wide acting range, charismatic and can carry a whole drama just by himself. However Yamashita aren't capable to do that regardless of the hords of fans who fawn on his greatness. Ok, maybe he can act.. a bit but he's no Kimutaku. Maybe I missed reading news of recent Prince Yamapi era people have been raving about. Any Tokyograph/Oricon/Sponichi articles talking about Yamapi star power?
Don't get me wrong. I like Yamapi. He's cute and was really good in Nobuta wo Produce. I just find its not fair that he's alone to be credited for a drama success. He was ALWAYS partnered with other talented/ equally attractive actors that were able to pull their weight on any of Yamapi's dramas. Moreover, comparing him to Kimutaku greatness just give me icky goosebumps. I'm sorry. Feel free to disagree and prove me wrong

well... constructive criticism are most welcome and not every fangirl are fanatics. if the performance is bad its bad but love is blind.. or deaf (i'm a matsujun fan.. yeah ) and fangirls are passionate
ummm... care to review Maou? I'm curious about the none fans feel about it.. only if you are interested that is |

pretty sure the fans you have encountered are those immature and hard core die hards, there are alot of them but not all fan girls are like that. if you noticed those fans who scream like w*ores like you are reffering to are the "newly recruits" who they are just in the "submissive stage" _________________

It's hard to recommend anything after only one episode. I thought it was ok although viewers who work in the medical field will tell you this show is cheesy. |

I agree. The young cast of trainee doctors look more like high school kids or first year college students. One need to be at least 30yrs old before doing such surgical procedures independently as an emergency doctor.
Yamapi looks better here than Kurosagi.......
sorry for being too critical......i couldn't distinguish the two lady trainees for a while....It is either their characters don't stand out or they are too alike in their physical appearances
Yanagiba aged so much !!! |

I usually like medical dramas so I decided to give this one a shot. It was ok, I have to say that the cases they get are far more interesting to me than any of the main characters so far. Erika Toda's character and the young male doctor that isn't Yamapi are the characters that I found to be the most likeable right off the bat.
One thing I really didn't like were the gratuitous Yamapi shots that were EVERYWHERE in the drama and were usually just shots of him staring into space- not looking concerned/upset/angry/happy or any emotion- just a very vacant stare. I also thought | Spoiler (highlight text to read): | | the opening scenes of him |
| | | | | |
