Agreed, it's almost disgusting to see what dramas are on top, or these so called "actors".
Just because some girl/guy is cute (or sexy), doesn't means she makes a good actress/actor and those are the ones getting mass votes.
ontopic: I really enjoyed 'Cheap Love', like 50% of the people who rated this show hated it. Normally people vote 10/10 without even watching it because it has Mr. GTO in it |

Under-rated for me are:
Overtime
Boku to kanojo to kanojo no ikiru michi / The way we live
Kimi ga oshiete Kureta Koto / From the heart
Suuta no Koi / In love with superstar
Koi ni Ochitara
Tiger & Dragon
Over-rated:
With Love
Kimmi wa Petto
The Gift |

Thought I'd revive this thread.
It's been over two years since I stated my choice for an underrated drama. During that interim, I've seen a lot of series, and one that seems to be rarely mentioned and is thus my newest nomination for underrated drama is Shiroi Kyoto.
I would compare it favorably to a Shakespearean tragedy, both in content and quality, with a compelling script and a great, largely veteran ensemble cast.
Airing in 2003, it is the best serious dorama made in the 21st century that I have thus far seen. |

As luck would have it, I'm watching this now (have 4 eps left) and as you say, it is most compelling...you wouldn't think a show like this, basically about the politics of Japanese medicine, could keep your attention, but it certainly does...
easily some of the best performances I've seen from a group of actors who've taken on different roles from what we're used to...in particular, Kuroki Hitomi as a cynical bar hostess...and Nishida Toshiyuki as a sniveling, smarmy, conniving doctor who'll do anything for his son-in-laws success...
also, the BGM is excellent...

Attack No.1 I think is really underrated. Some would say it is an Ace Wo Nerae clone, but I think it was done much better with more tears involved. _________________

I'm really sure satorare and jyou no ksyoushitsu is underrated. both were terribly good, but seems it's just not making a big hit
while some of aya ueto's is a bit overrated, such as ace wo nerae, there's nothing new about her there. |

| I'm just finishing L'oiseau bleu, really surprisingly good and not too predictable at all. It's one I really haven't heard much about at all. Also, Shota no Sushi was surprisingly good and my favorite, Lunch Queen. |

I remember Be Nice to People. There were aspects I really liked. The little kid was great. He's gone on to do a bunch of dramas.
My candidate would be "Teru Teru Ashita". I didn't like the preceeding "Ame to Yume.." very much, but Teru Teru worked quite well for me. I liked the fantasy aspects because they were presented as possbly being the fantasies the teenage protagonist (Teruyo) might imagine, being in the predicament she's in.
Great theme song too.
It didn't get very good ratings, IIRC. Probably because it didn't have any pretty boys in it |

I dunno. I watched Teru Teru Ashita before Ame to Yume. Maybe that's why I liked it better?
Teru Teru Ashita does make a couple of references to the previous cast/characters of Ame to Yume. Sort of "in jokes". They were a little too silly, but I just overlooked them. |

EDIT: I was right: http://jdorama.com/viewtopic.7477.htm
And the last post was almost a year to the day.
