After going 0-2 with 5 no decisions in his last seven starts, the Rangers give Darvish a grand total of three runs to work with and makes it hold up getting the win while increasing his league leading strike out total to 151. Victory! Peace!

Darvish, Iwakuma make AL All-Star team

NEW YORK, July 7 (14:52) Kyodo

Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish and fellow right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners were both named to the American League All-Star team on Saturday.

Darvish, 26, was selected for the second year in a row, while the 32-year-old Iwakuma earned a spot on the roster for the first time for the Midsummer Classic to be played on July 16 at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.

Boston Red Sox reliever Koji Uehara, 38, has been put on the ballot for the Internet vote to select each league's final All-Star.

Darvish, who allowed a season-high five earned runs with four walks in six-plus innings in a 9-5 loss to the Houston Astros on Saturday, is 8-4 with a 3.02 ERA. He leads the majors with 157 strikeouts.

The former Nippon Ham Fighters ace was named to the 34th and last spot on the All-Star team after winning the final fan vote last year but did not get any time on the mound.

"It's unbelievable that I was selected," Darvish said. "It's an honorable thing. I'm really grateful."

Iwakuma, who owns an AL-best 2.60 ERA, was a three-time All-Star in Japan, but this is his first major league selection after signing with Seattle last season.

"It's a real honor to be selected," said Iwakuma. "(The All-Star game) is packed with superstars, so I want to enjoy myself."

The Yankees get another Japanese player (sort of Bleah ):

Yankees sign Travis Ishikawa

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees have added first baseman Travis Ishikawa to their 25-man roster and inserted their latest fill-in player into the starting lineup for Monday night's game against Kansas City.

The Yankees claimed the 29-year-old off waivers from Baltimore on Sunday. To make room for Ishikawa, New York sent infielder David Adams to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Ishikawa is the latest castoff to be picked up by the Yankees and take the place of an injured All-Star. Manager Joe Girardi says Ishikawa will be used to spell Lyle Overbay, who was signed in March soon after Mark Teixeira tore the tendon sheath in his right wrist. Teixeira is now out for the season.

Tanaka makes Major League debut with Giants

Japanese rookie Kensuke Tanaka shined in his major league debut, despite the San Francisco Giants' 10-6 defeat to the New York Mets on Tuesday night.

The 32-year-old Tanaka received his first call-up to the majors and immediately got results, producing a single to center in the fifth inning for his first major league hit.

He batted second and was plugged into left field -- showing his prowess with a spectacular catch against the wall in the second to steal a potential home run from Andrew Brown.

After his bloop single in the fifth, Tanaka led off with a walk and scored to tie the game on a Pablo Sandoval sacrifice fly in the seventh. Despite his heroics, the reigning World Series champions continued to struggle, losing 18 of their last 23 games.

Tanaka declared free agency from the Nippon Ham Fighters in the offseason and signed a minor league deal with the Giants with an invitation to spring training.

But he struggled, committing several errors in exhibition and had been playing for Triple-A Fresno since the start of the season, where he was also troubled defensively.

Tanaka, who has mainly played second base but will strictly roam left for the Giants, has batted .330 with 24 RBIs and 20 stolen bases with Triple-A Fresno.

He went 1-for-4 again today, but it didn't help, Giants lost again.

This bothers me more:

Darvish placed on DL with bad back

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Right-hander Yu Darvish has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Texas Rangers and will miss the All-Star Game next week.

Darvish has a mild strain in his upper back. The move was announced Wednesday and is retroactive to July 6.

Darvish was scheduled to pitch against Baltimore on Thursday, but has been scratched. He's 8-4 overall, but has won only once in his last nine starts.

Darvish leads the majors with 157 strikeouts. He has a 3.02 ERA.

Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine says, ''At this stage, it's not something we are really worried about.'' He says the injury ''was a little more fatigue than anything.''

In a statement, Darvish said, ''I don't think it's a big issue, but just as a precaution, I'd rather skip a start than push it through.''

Darvish will fly back to Dallas on Thursday for further evaluation

Giants crush the Padres 10-1. Kensuke Tanaka went 2-for-3 and scored 2 runs. He's only hitting .400 now. Too late to get him in the All-Star game?

In New York, the Yankees gave Kuroda his requisite 2 runs so he pitched 5 innings of shut out ball and got the win and the Yankees beat the Twins 2-0.
