1 Pound no Fukuin [1ポンドの福音]
A Pleasant Watch [Rating: 7/10]
Overacting and too much exaggerating aren't things that you'd want in a drama, but in this one, it works. Kamenashi Kazuya's portrayal of the ever hungry, hyperactive Kosaku who is head over heels in love with Meisa Kuroki's character is good. You can't help but smile and shake your head whenever he breaks his diet and starts eating again. Meisa Kuroki also fits her role very nicely. It's light-heartedness is one of the key factors that makes this drama a pleasant watch.
Akai Ito [赤い糸]
Wished it went a little more deeper [Rating: 7/10]
This drama sends out a message that is quite important for today's younger society. Drugs, suicide and so on. I just wish these themes could have been used with greater depth in the plot. The acting wasn't that bad but could have been better. The songs used for the drama are really nice though. Overall its an okay watch.
Atashinchi no Danshi [アタシんちの男子]
Cute and funny [Rating: 7/10]
This drama makes you laugh out loud, then makes you cry, then makes you smile and go 'aww' right after that. It's an easy going drama and although the plot is pretty cliche, its one you should definitely watch.
Attention Please [アテンションン プリース]
Very cute [Rating: 8/10]
Very cute drama! It really shows you how tough it is to be a flight attendant.
Bambino! [バンビーノ!]
Normal [Rating: 5/10]
Its a pretty normal drama. Nothing special about it that makes you go "I loved it beause....". It just flowed along nicely and when you reach the end you go "Oh. It's finished." If you're a Matsumoto Jun fan then by all means, do watch it. If not, well, it won't make a difference if you do or don't watch it.
Chakushin Ari [着信あり]
Falls Apart Half way Through [Rating: 4/10]
The only thing good about it was the mystery, which only lasted until the 5th episode. After that, it fell apart. Acting wise, below average. Don't bother. Watch the first few episodes, then read the episode summaries for the rest.
Code Blue: Doctor Heli Kinkyu Kyumei [コード・ブルー]
Dont give up on it too early [Rating: 6/10]
It starts of slow and only picks up speed after episode 5. That's when the plot really gets going. Don't skim through the first few episodes though, there's some pretty important bits that define the characters. The final episode did leave a few sub-plots unfinished, but the Special took care of that just fine. After watching the first few operations you may end up skipping these scenes in the later episodes, but apart from that, it's not that bad a watch.
Densha Otoko [電車男]
Better than Expected [Rating: 7/10]
When I first read the synopsis I thought it'd be a ridiculous stupid show. But when I read the reviews again, I decided to just give it a try. And I'm glad I gave it a chance. It's really not as bad as it seems. It's really funny!! Although if you think about it, having a person get that obsessed over a complete stranger, and then having it broadcasted all over the internet is sort of freaky. Once you get over that, the drama is more enjoyable. The actors really make you feel their otaku-ness to the point where you go "omg.that's so lame." Would have liked to see a bit more about the other otaku's lives though.
Dragon Zakura [ドラゴン桜]
Falls Short [Rating: 5/10]
Typical drama where a teacher inspires students to work hard and be successful in school and life. It was refreshing to see Abe Hiroshi tell them about the harsh reality instead of the usual "inspiring words/be positive" routine which is usually seen in most of these kind of dramas. Because what he says in the drama reflects what it happening in the real world. However, it does get boring after a while. First few episodes were interesting but halfway through the drama, ended up fast forwading most it. Disappointing ending too. For a more satisfying drama, go for Gokusen or GTO. Watch this if you're a Abe Hiroshi, Yamashita Tomoshia or Koike Teppei fan.
Engine [エンジン]
Pretty good. [Rating: 7/10]
Kimura Takura once again potrays the character brilliantly! Good supporting cast as well.
Galileo [ガリレオ]
Worth A Watch [Rating: 7/10]
Using physics to solve murder cases is a nice fresh idea in a detective drama. The first and last few episodes are the cooler cases though. Whoever thought up the ideas for each case has got to be a genius! Personally, it would have been more attention grabing if there had been a bit more suspense.
Giragira [ギラギラ]
Its ok [Rating: 5/10]
Its not that great, but its watchable. Since its only 8 episodes, the story feels a little rushed in the first few episodes. Plot? At first, the main character isn't accepted by the younger guys, he starts helping people in every episode, he gets accepted, trouble comes along, younger guys start supporting him.....sounds familiar? Basically, nothing special about this drama, but if you'd like a little more insight into the world of hosts, go ahead and watch it.
Gokusen Season 3 [ごくせん 3]
Hmm...this looks familiar... [Rating: 5/10]
Its the same thing all over again. Gokusen 1 was awesome. Gokusen 2 still kept me interested. Gokusen 3 just left me bored. Same routine in every episode: student gets in trouble, Yankumi turns up, gives a speech while bad guys stare back, some attack, she fights back, she wins, student learns a lesson, everyone's happy. This is the 3rd season for goodness sake! Its time for some variation! It would have been pretty interesting if some characters from previous seasons had brief appearances. Sure, its still enjoyable to watch, but compared to the previous two seasons, this one falls flat.
Haken no Hinkaku [ハケンの品格]
Absolutely love it! [Rating: 9/10]
Shinohara Ryoko shows her versatility in this drama. It's the complete opposite of her character in Anego. How on earth is can she keep such a straight face doing all those weird and funny exercises?! Nothing great about the plot, its basically one event an episode. Would have liked to know a bit more about her past in the drama though. But its bound to make you smile and laugh. So do check it out as its not your typical ordinary office drama.
Hana Yori Dango [花より男子]
Loved it! [Rating: 9/10]
Absoultely love this drama! Nice story, good acting, good cast, nice theme song, what more do you want?
Hana Yori Dango Season 2 [花より男子]
The Usual Sequel Syndrome [Rating: 8/10]
Didn't have any high expectations for the sequel because sequels never seem to do well. But surprisingly, it wasn't as bad as I thought. More focus was given to the supporting characters and there's a bit more expansion on the plot thanks to the love triangle. Some scenes were not neccessary as they didn't serve any purpose to the story. If you're hooked to the first one, you'd definitely love this one too.
Hotaru no Hikari [ホタルノヒカリ]
~cute, funny, sweet~ [Rating: 8/10]
Amemiya is such an adorable character. She may get on your nerves at times but somehow you always forgive her in the end. Not your usual office drama female character either. Dialogue is funny and witty too so you'll always be smiling and laughing throughout the drama. Ayase Haruka and Fujiki Naohito have good chemistry and it shows through their dialogues. Just wish Kato Kazuki could have done a bit better in portraying his character. There are a few sweet moments to, the kind that makes you go 'aww...'. It's a light-hearted drama that's pleasant to watch.
Ichi Ritoru no Namida [1リットルの涙]
Touches Your Heart [Rating: 10/10]
Absoultely loved this drama! Sawajiri Erika's acting was fantastic! You really feel the struggles Aya faces, her fears, her hopes, her feelings. The presence of a strong supporting cast truly brings the story to life. Good selection of theme and insert songs as well (K - Only Human and Remioromen - Konayuki) as they both fit the overall mood and message of the drama. You'd be making a BIG mistake if you don't!
Kurosagi [クロサギ]
Worth A Watch [Rating: 8/10]
A swindler who swindles from other swindlers to help those who have been swindled. I guess you could say it's something like a modern day Robin Hood, but a darker version. The on-screen chemistry between Yamashita Tomohisa and Horikita Maki is good and natural. No over acting at all. The only problem is the inspector's laugh which sounds forced and fake. Yamazaki Tsutomo's acting is also something that should not be missed. Some cases may be a bit dull, but if you ignore that and just stick to the main plot, you'll have a good drama that's worth your time.
Maou [魔王]
Non-stop suspense! [Rating: 10/10]
This drama is a must for every suspense/thriller lover. The plot is excellent. There is suspense in every single episode, and it just makes you want to keep watching. Once you start, you can't stop! Usually, you don't find out who the murderer is until towards the end of the drama. In this one however, you know who's the mastermind from the very beginning. Its quite interesting to watch the plot unfold from both perspectives: planning and carrying out the murder (mastermind) and trying to solve the murder (detectives). Another plus point is both Ohno Satoshi and Ikuta Toma brilliantly brought their characters to life. This is definitely a drama that should be put on your must-see list!
Mei-chan no Shitsuji [メイちゃんの執事]
Worth watching [Rating: 8/10]
Cute, funny and touching. The twists towards the end are unexpected and interesting. The theme song is also very catchy. However, there are still a few unfinished chapters after the final episode, so hopefully a special will be made to clear them up. If you enjoyed Yukan Club and Hana Kimi, you'll definitely enjoy this one too.
My Boss, My Hero [マイボスマイヒロ]
Born To Be Yakuza [Rating: 8/10]
Nagase Tomoya is the perfect guy for a yakuza role! It's as though he's not even acting, it just comes so naturally to him. Seriously hilarious!
Nobuta wo Produce [野ブタ。をプロデュース]
Its ok. [Rating: 6/10]
Its just an ok drama. Nothing outstanding about it except for Yamashita Tomohisa's portrayal of Akira which is original compared to other typical high school characters. Nothing great about the plot. There's some nice scenes here and there but nothing that makes you go 'wow'. Just a drama you watch once to see what its all about.
Nodame Cantabile [のだめ カンタビ−レ]
Cute and sweet [Rating: 8/10]
You don't have to enjoy classical music to enjoy this drama. The story itself is easy to follow and you can't help smiling at the comedic moments.
Puzzle [パズル]
It gets boring [Rating: 4/10]
It's the same old routine in each episode. There's nothing to look forward to towards the end. You don't even know anything about the characters' backgrounds. No depth at all and after seeing the same things over and over again, you just get bored.
Shibatora [シバトラ]
A lot darker than you think [Rating: 7/10]
When you watch the first few minutes, you'd think that its going to be a light funny drama, the usual detective series with the comedic sidekicks. But as you continue to watch, you realise that there's a darker side to this series. Abuse, drugs, and so on, are some of the themes used. Another interesting surprise is that you don't find out who the real killer is until the end. However, the lead role should have been given to another actor.
Sora Kara Furu Ichioku no Hoshi [空から降る一億の星]
Incredible! Must Watch! [Rating: 10/10]
Absolutely brilliant drama!! Full of suspense and mystery. The plot is superb and there's so many twists in the plot that it keeps you guessing right until the very end. You just want to keep watching non-stop! Probaby Kimura Takuya's best drama. Highly highly recommended!
Sushi Oji! [スシ王子!]
Funny and...that's about it. [Rating: 6/10]
What got me interested in this drama was the Okinawa Sea Turtle thing which is just so hilarious! Its a funny drama, no doubt about that. But after the first few episodes, the jokes start getting repetitive and start getting lame. Makes you go "Okay, I've heard this before, something new please?" Acting skills aren't that great, but I suppose that's not really important in a drama that's not so serious. Each episode is basically the same thing, learn skills, get told its not good enough, improve on skills, go competition, freak out at fish eyes, win competition. Watch it if you just want some laughs.
The Quiz Show Season 2 [ザ・クイズショウ 2]
Not Bad [Rating: 6/10]
The first episode is interesting but the plot doesn't start to progress until the fourth episode. Just when you think you've got it all figured out, parts of the puzzle are revealed and this makes you think again. However, after all the build up and suspense, the climax was a little disappointing. Overall, not a bad watch.
Tiger & Dragon [タイガー&ドラゴン]
For a Good Laugh [Rating: 8/10]
I love how the stories are within stories and how the stories connect with each other. Classic stories retold with a modern twist and yet still retains the overall theme or message. Nagase Tomoya definitely fits the yakuza character and portrays it well. Although the serious parts (which is only probably about 5% of the whole drama) aren't convincing enough, the rest of the drama is really funny. If you're looking for a good plot or something that makes you think then this isn't the drama for you. If you just want something light, entertaining with some witty dialogue, then you won't be disappointed. Overall, a drama you definitely have to watch!
Unfair [アンフェア]
Keeps You Guessing [Rating: 9/10]
I love Shinohara Ryoko! After watching Anego, I couldn't wait to watch her in this drama! The plot has definitely got to be the best part. You think you have it all figured out and then *bam!* the plot twists and you realise that you were wrong! It's surprise after surprise throughout the drama. Some parts might get a little dull, but only a little. The only thing I don't get is why Shinohara Ryoko has to be naked in her house?? Totally irrelevent to the story. How each case connects to each other might make your head spin a bit, but otherwise, totally worth watching!
Uta no Onii-san [歌のおにいさん]
A Cute Drama [Rating: 7/10]
At first glance, it seems like a cute, cheerful drama with not much substance. However, if you look past the over the top acting which happens every now and then, you'll realise that this story actually does happen in real life. People losing jobs, people forced to do jobs they don't like, making the new people do all the dirty work. This drama gives you a glimpse into the entertainment world and thanks to the humour, it doesn't get too serious. A simple plot, nothing complex or complicated. Its nice to see Ohno Satoshi playing a character that is very different from the one he played in Maou. The rest of the cast is good as well. Overall, a fun and pleasant watch.
Utahime [歌姫]
Bittersweet [Rating: 6/10]
I loved the first few episodes but towards the end, it started to get a little too boring. Although the drama itself can be quite slow paced at times, these last few episodes started to drag a bit too much. However, Nagase Tomoya and Aibu Saki played their characters well. The rest of the cast is equally good. The ending is bittersweet and you'll have to think a while to get the final conclusion.
Voice [ヴォイス]
Not up to expectations [Rating: 6/10]
The first few episodes aren't that bad, as the characters are somehow involved in the cases, allowing us to learn about their past or why they joined Forensic Medicine. However, we don't learn much about the main character until the final episode (with a small twist) which is a nice change as this is usually done in the begining. However, the middle episodes are very routine like and predictable. After watching Eito's perfomance in Unfair, his performance in this drama was quite a let down. This drama is still watchable though. There are some pretty funny, light-hearted scenes here and there which is a nice contrast to the more serious scenes. Overall, not a bad drama, and if you don't think of it as a Japanese version of CSI, you won't be so disappointed.
Yuukan kurabu [有閑倶楽部]
Light Hearted [Rating: 8/10]
The storyline itself is illogical. 6 brilliant rich students, who are more often than not skipping class (which respectful would ever allow that?), becoming detecives and always saving the day. To enjoy the drama more, you'll have to ignore this. Out of the 6 students, I enjoyed Yokoyama Yu's performance the most. The others are just average acting skills. There are funny moments and the characters do grow on you as you watch the series from episode to episode. If you want something substantial with more reality in it, this one isn't for you. This drama is more for those who just want to have a good watch, a few smiles and who can easily go with the flow.
Zettai Kareshi [絶対彼氏]
Sweet [Rating: 7/10]
Its not your typical manga to drama show (meaning no over the top or outrageous expressions). Its very sweet and has a lot of 'awww' moments. Nothing too serious and the plot is kept simple.
