calico's drama votes (9)
Boku dake no Madonna [僕だけのマドンナ]
I didn't think I would enjoy this drama, but I really did! Hasegawa Kyoko is a sight for sore eyes: very pretty, great hair, expressive eyes, and she can ACT! Takizawa-kun too, adds alot of fun and laughter to this series, and even though he looks like everyone's very cute baby brother, makes a nice-looking pair with Kyoko-chan. I enjoyed this very much. Will love to get the OST as well.
Ganbatte Ikimasshoi [がんばっていきまっしょい]
Another teen drama about sports and friendship...yet I really enjoyed it. Not as mang-ish as H2 or Ace o Nerae, and I really like Suzuki Anne's acting. She has great screen presence, and chemistry with the actresses playing her rowing team. Plus, it has Nishikido Ryo, who just proves that he is a future star to watch.
Gokusen Season 2 [ごくせん2]
Enjoyed this very much!! The students are meaner, angrier and cuter! :)
Ichi Ritoru no Namida [1リットルの涙]
Kindaichi shonen no Jikenbo (2005) [金田一少年の事件簿]
Enjoyed it very much. Kamenashi and Ueno Juri breathe new life into the roles of Kindaichi and Miyuki. The story itself is the same as most Kindaichi murder mysteries, but I like the chemistry of the two young actors. The fact that the SP chronicles the budding stage where Kindaichi doesn't yet know how special he is, makes this a unique episode. Hope there will be a drama series not too long in the future.
Ningen no Shoumei [人間の証明]
A very engaging,thought-provoking drama. The plot revolves around fate, and the twists and developments makes the story and characters interesting. The pacing of the plot is good, the actors are top-notched. One of the best drama to come along for a long time. Takenouchi has again convinced me why he deserved and received a Best Actor nomination - he is an actor that can really ACT.
Nobuta wo Produce [野ブタ。をプロデュース]
Sekai no chuushin de, ai wo sakebu [世界の中心で、愛をさけぶ]
Yasashii Jikan [優しい時間]
A beautifully crafted, gently-paced drama about father and son relationships. And Hokkaido, Hokkaido...if I could live there I would, what a beautiful place!

calico's artiste votes (9)
Abe Hiroshi [阿部寛]
When I chance upon a drama and find to my surprise that Abe Hiroshi is in it. It doesn't matter if it is a small or major role, it will always make my day. He is always funny to watch, and very charming.
Hasegawa Kyoko [長谷川京子]
I first noticed her in Tentai Kanzoku (which she was not credited for on JDorama) and she GLOW! Even though the lead was Koyuki, Kyoko-san's supporting role really stood out with her beauty, poise and acting skills. Hope to see her in more god J-dramas, even as she remains one of the gorgeous faces of Kose.
Kamenashi Kazuya [亀梨和也]
Thought his aloof, quiet and observant persona in Gokusen 2 was very well presented. Someone who is reputed to take his work very seriously, this is an artiste with potential.
Nakama Yukie [仲間由紀恵]
I love her comedic sense of timing, and not many great actresses can do comedy. Don't know why she is always cast as a woman whom others don't find attractive. Nakama Yukie, in my humble opinion, is one of the prettiest (and talented) actresses around.
Nakatani Miki [中谷美紀]
A very talented actress. And she has an extremely beautiful face to boot. Hope to see her in more dramas.
Nishikido Ryo [錦戸亮]
I have to admit I didn't expect much from a member of an "idol group", but he surprised me. A very expressive actor, gives depth to his characters and has screen presence. He is also undeniably very good-looking and charismatic. He may be the one to watch in the future; standing head and shoulders above the crowd of other current idols.
Shinohara Ryoko [篠原涼子]
Takenouchi Yutaka [竹野内豊]
He is an actor I have grown to really respect. He was cute in his Beach Boys days, but I really start to enjoy watching him on screen in his recent dramas - he has become very creditable, and his very good looks have matured well. Ningen no Shoumei showcast his acting abilities and talent for languages.
Ueno Juri [上野樹里]
Very very pretty, and a talented actress. Seeing her great performances in Engine and Swing Girls makes me look forward to her potential in th near future. Looking forward to seeing her as Miyuki in the new installment of Kindaichi Shonen Jikenbo opposite Kamenashi Kazuya.

At the half-way mark of Episode 6, I find myself bored by the storyline and plot, but watching it for Ueto Aya, whom I am surprise to find has a refreshing and quite natural presence. She is able to carry this drama by herself. I do wish that Nishikido Ryo, who did such a fantastic job in One Litre of Tears, has a bigger role in this drama. At this point, his talent and screen presence is being wasted in this no-brainer drama.

Love Haseagwa Kyoko. One of the prettiest actresses around. She infuses this drama with spunk and makes it interesting to watch. Takizawa as her younger soulmate is adorable and his angst in the drama very heartfelt. The supporting cast is good too, and nobody that you really want to hate. All in all, a very pleasant and enjoyable drama to watch.

This is a very boring school drama. The kids are boring, they have no personality and are like cardboard renditions of past school dramas. I don't find myself rooting for any of them at all despite all their problems. And sad to say, while I enjoy the two of them when they are performing with their group, I found the acting of the two NewS idol members to be really stiff especially Tegoshi Yuya. Though the genki-ness of Massu's character is a tad better that the coolness that Tegoshi is trying to pull off but failed. This drama has no charisma at all.
Gal Cir [ギャルサ]
Rating: 4/10 (Watched)
Brainless and quite ridiculous but I still watch each week. This drama works at allowing my brain to rest without actually working to digest any information it may be imparting to me. Great for at the end of a stressful work day and you don't need any heavy drama plots to further drain your brain cells.
Ganbatte Ikimasshoi [がんばっていきまっしょい]
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
Fun, and quite enjoyable. Great acting from several of the lead casts - Suzuki Anne and Nishikido Ryo. I also liked the fact that this is a drama NOT filmed in Tokyo for a change. Nice to be able to see other beautiful parts of Japan.
Gokusen [ごくせん]

Gokusen Season 2 [ごくせん2]
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
This, I really enjoyed. Nakama Yukie is always a great actress with good comedic timing. She has great chemistry with the lot of actors who played her rebellious troubled students. Gokusen II can be quite manga-ish and dramatic, but it's alot of fun and makes me watch this all in one sitting. Never knew KAT-TUN before watching this, but now I do thanks to Kamenashi Kazuya's great turn as the cool, elegant but troubled Odagiri Ryu. Very entertaining and well worth my time!

I am still watching this drama, but I am loving it. I would think it is the best of the lot for the winter 2007 season. Shinohara Ryoko is a riot. Love her! Her great acting skills are put into great use in portraying the challenges and prejudices faced by haikens (temp contract workers) in the Japanese corporate world "ruled" by permanent salaried workers.

I was really surprised by the fact that I actually enjoyed this very funny, quirky detective drama. Joe Odagiri, one of the coolest actor around, has a lesser-known talent for great comic timing. This is a drama with an interesting premise - a police officer who investigates expired cases or cases that reach their statue of limitations as a hobby - I do recommend it as an underrated drama from Winter 2006.

Kuitan is my guilty pleasure. Love food dramas and the over-the-top plots each week, and Kuitan's drama-mama flourishes and investigative methods kept me glued to the TV (or my computer) and actually made me anticipate the next episode. This drama was never boring and the Holmes Agency gang is totally quirky in their own rights.
Kurosagi [クロサギ]
Rating: 5/10 (Watched)
Highly anticipated this drama. But even as I continued to watch each week, I was stuck with a nagging feeling that each new episode was just a repeat of the previous one. The plot which seemed so promising did not seem to be progressing at all, with episodes mostly being one-shot of how he swindle a new character each week. Then in the last few episodes, as though realizing the series is suppose to end soon, the writers hurried the plot to tie up loose ends. The relationship between Kurosagi and Tsurara was extremely unsatisfying. There was no progression, no development at all in this aspect. Overall, Kurosagi ended up being a drama that wasn't quite able to deliver, and just didn't do it for me at all. While I enjoyed the obviousd chemistry between Yamapi and Horikita Maki, it was a pity the writers was not able to capitalize on that to write a more deeper and heartfelt story on the bond between to the two protagonists.

This drama drew me in from the first episode, and that alone is why it was one of the more successful dramas this season - the fact that it made me want to continue watching. The plot may be silly, the chaarcters and situations over the top, but this drama is charming in the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously and doesn't hide the fact that it knows it is meant to be silly. Nagase is a good comic actor, and Koki from KAT-TUN as his underling is a rough gem - funny guy in the making. The school kids are not as irritating as say, those from Gachibaka or DanDori, and I had always like Aragaki Yu. At the end of the day, looking back, I can say that this is one of the few handful of dramas that gave a level of satisfaction to me at the end of the summer season.
My Little Chef
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
I really like this drama about French cuisine. And I am becoming a fan of Yada Akiko and Abe Hiroshi. Although most scenes centred only in the restaurant, I like the warm and earnestness of this drama. It is a feel-good drama where people's lives are changed for the better through the efforts of a few. I have seen exquisite restaurants in Japan like the ones in the drama. Will love to dine in one one day.

Oishii puropozu [おいしいプロポーズ]
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
I LOVE Hasegawa Kyoko. She is one of the most natural lead actresses I have come across in a while, but still so underrated. More people need to know how to appreciate her subtle yet highly-competent acting skills. In Oishii Puropozu, she was delightful as a headstrong yet talented chef in love with a younger man, and a somewhat spoilt rich brat at that. But I felt that the plot and the male lead casting let her down somewhat. Both were quite uninspiring and I wondered at the possibilities if both had been done correctly. I love dramas about food and therefore I have a soft spot for this one. While I thought young Koike Keisuke did a competent job and had surely come a long way from his student role in Gokusen II, I actually can't help feeling that if another actor was cast in the role of the male protagonist -- say, Akanishi Jin, for example, it would have made for a much interesting combination.

Overrated. While I have always enjoyed Takenouchi's superb acting skills, and again he is at his subtle best here again. I find Choi Ji Woo to be over the top with her acting. I actually thought she was the weakest link in this whole drama . This drama was so-so for me.

Sailor Fuku to Kikanju [セーラー服と機関銃]
Rating: 3/10 (Watched)
I anticipated this series, but I was bored from the first few episodes onwards. I thought the plot was cheesy and weak, and while I understand Nagasawa Masami is highly regarded for her thespian skills these days, I was not convince through this drama.
Sapuri [サプリ]
Rating: 6/10 (Watched)
Ahh...Sapuri started off with alot of promise but sputtered out of steam towards the end. I was solely disappointed with this drama as a whole. A bunch of good-looking people with relationship issues, working for a trendy creative agency...a plot that goes on for 11 episodes but with nothing at the end to show for it? The Kame-Misaki Itoh coupling was very unconvincing. As many had pointed out, she looks like a sister than a lover and I have to agree. For the first ten episodes she never managed to convince me enough that she was really in love with Kame's character Ishida Yuya. She often came across like he was an irritant to her, therefore the declaration of love at the end was like, "whatever, let's tie up all loose ends now" Perhaps this was the result of Misaki Itoh's lacklustre acting skills, which sadly is really below average. She is pretty though. Kame, on the other hand, is too "genki" (overacting?) sometimes but the boy sure can emote well...he has come a long way from Gokusen days.

This was a competent drama, and I did like Sawajiri Erika when she was Aya in One Litre of Tears. However, I am tired of seeing Yamada Takiyuki getting all the good albeit-similar roles, maybe they should take a look at other rising young male actors? Overall, this was an ok drama for me. I actually prefer the movie version that was released prior to this, and I thought the YUI-Tsukamoto Takashi combi was a breath of fresh air which I liked a lot better.

Tiger & Dragon [タイガー&ドラゴン]
Bored.... [Rating: 3/10]
I am one of the minority who was bored by this drama. And I did give it a chance and made it till about 4 episodes. Okada is a great actor and the ONLY great thing about this so-so drama, but even his star power in this drama just couldn't keep my interest. Yawn.....
Toshishita No Otoko [年下之男]
Could have chosen a more attractive and convincing [Rating: 2/10]
I only watch this because of Inamori Izumi. Other than that, this drama irks me. There are attractive older women in J-drama world like Kuroki Hitomi (Dark Water, Golden Bowl), and I find it extremely unconvincing that any younger virile man would find Fubuki Jun attractive with her eyebags, sagging chin and neck and "obaasan sweater". This drama is very unrealistic for me and I cringe each time the younger man declares his desire to the older obaasan.
