I thought that you guys were way ahead of us...what happened? They just aired episode 37 last night.

Right. The next batch goes out Monday. And then there will only be one more batch.... that's sad.... I'm really attached to this drama. It's grown on me much as Churasan did. But at least I will now have another super powerful drama to revisit. The triumverate of Atsu Hime, Churasan and Honma Mon are like the anchor giant store in a mall. All other dramas pale in their shadow.

Probably the extravagant part of that was hiring a bunch of guys to walk the Tokaido road for you. Wink

Re Atsu-hime, it's finally starting to get interesting now that it's almost over. Smile

Why did they add a 50th extended episode after everything of value in the story had already been wrapped up? It's a like an hour of watching all the main characters that survived the series die. This ending is more depressing than all the other Taiga's where the lead has a bloody ending. hehe

They always seem to spread the last episode of a Taiga over two shows... Probably because the last episode is typically more than an hour and they can't allocate more time from the broadcast station... Sweat

Argh, why go back to the sengoku jidai? There's plenty of interesting stories to tell during the meiji restoration. It feels like the 16th century has been beaten to death in taiga dramas. I guess it's a personal opinion though.

I thought Atsuhime has been an interesting taiga drama, it's nice to have something different once in a while.

Any thoughts on why they seem to like t he 16th century?

Furin Kazan was the first time I had seen Uesugi Kenshin in a taiga. Maybe they are bouncing off of that, in the way that Furin Kazan bounced off of Toshie to Matsu?
Subsequent taiga doramas (with the exception of Atsu-Hime) seem to be interwoven with one another.

Besides, the "Warring States" period is like Japan's Wild West. Plenty of US TV shows and movies take place west of the Mississipi in the 1880's. Smile

As the previous poster pointed out, the Sengoku-jidai (Warring States period which lasted from around 1478 to 1603) was one of the most dynamic and turbulent periods in Japan. It was an era of constant conflict involving many of the most charismatic and famous warlords in Japanese history. As such, it is rich with larger-than-life characters, countless battles, and Machiavellian-type politics. It only ended when Tokugawa Ieyasu consolidated power, became shogun, and ushered in the Edo period.

I figured as much, that it was the most turbulent (and most romantic?) period in Japan's history... Victory! Peace!

I enjoy sharing such a great drama. Be aware that since they split the last episode, the packages
wont go out until next Monday. Next Sat is the last half of the last episode.

I guess I just like the Meiji because it was my area of interest in Japanese history. It probably is harder to do a traditional taiga there. Plus, I've never cared for westerns, except for the the Clint Eastwood ones and The Wild Bunch. I heard they're doing a taiga after the next one based on the life of Sakamoto Ryoma, so it'll be another one at the end of the Tokugawa era.

I have a question about the Atsuhime episodes that Ralph is recording and the ones being uploaded at D-addicts: Do they air historical information at the end of each episode or has it been edited out? I'm just wondering because the ones that are aired in Hawaii have about a minute of historical information at the end of each episode that shows what the places that were shown in Atsuhime looks like in its current state. I didn't notice this at the end of Ralph's recordings nor the D-addicts ones.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This is aired aired after episode 35: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=S0H30BPA
