PostPosted: Sat Oct 25, 2003 4:23 am    Post subject: groink builds new Jdorama capture box Reply with quote Back to top

Since early June, I've been capturing Jdoramas using a really mediocre MPEG-1 box on my Apple eMac. It's good enough for most needs. However, I've been quite envious of the quality of captures I see from other people, such as cuvio, musui, among others.

Now I'm stepping up to the big leagues... I'm currently building a dedicated box for video capturing/editing. Here's the specifications so far (keeping in mind that I'm trying to lower cost but keep quality up):

- Intel Pentium III 833Mhz
- 512MB RAM PC-100
- Windows 2000 Professional SP4
- 6GB for the system partition, 80GB 7200rpm for the captures
- ATI All-In-Wonder 9000 Pro AGP
- Capturing via digital cable box
- video is s-video
- audio is left/right channel via RCA cables
- 40x CDRW drive
- TMPGEnc Plus
- Nero Burning ROM 6.0.0.15

So far, the captures are working out great... I'm still hearing some hissing sounds on the audio, but I've figured out that it is KIKU-TV that's responsible for that. Still, overall it's very good. Right now, my test captures are via full DVD MPEG-2 quality (one hour equals about 3.5GB) and they're crystal clear. Hopefully, the ending result will be a 800MB MPEG-2 file, and I'll more likely use TMPGEnc Plus to rip it down to that size. I'm currently playing around with the settings to achieve the best quality possible.

Now.... I'm trying to locate some really easy-to-use video editing tools. The only thing I really need to do as far as editing goes is:

- edit out commercials
- possibly add some additional text to the captures (ex: "captures by groink" or something like that)

So far, I've tried stuff like M-Edit Pro and Pinnacle Studio. Problem is that for what I want to do, they're quite confusing and complicated. I'm very spoiled by my experience with Apple iMovie 3, and who knows I may resort back to my eMac just for video editing.

I'd like to hear from others about recommendations for video editing software, and any other tips/comments about my setup. I'm currently reading through www.dvdrhelp.com, which BTW is a great resource!

Thanks!

I use VirtualdubMod (modified version of virtualdub) for video editing and conversion to different formats. It pretty easy to use and best of all, its freeware. It supports mpg, divx, ogg/ogm and even matroska standard.

hey groink.
i would use tmpeg plus to do editing, its really easy to use. and the software is pretty cheap compared to others.
must take you a long time to do all that encoding.. i used to encode files from my matrox marvel from avi format to mpeg 1 or mpeg 2. the process is so tedious when i had a 800 mhz cpu. ive upgraded about 1 year ago to a 1.6 ghz, and it made a big difference in conversion time.

as for adding text, i would go with virtualdub and sub station alpha, i know its a subtitling program, but its relatively easy for sticking in text to a file. just look up some guides on www.dvdrhelp.com. they have step by step instructions on how to do this.

When I encode and rip DVDs i se a program called Gordian Knot which is a collection of many other programs (including Virtual Dub, Nandub etc).
I use it because I am an encoding n00b; even a monkey can set it up and hit encode.

Well, so good, so far... Thanks so much for the recommendations on software and such. Smile

Here's what I've done so far... After evaluating about a dozen or so video editing tools and other utilities, I came up with:

- InterVideo WinDVR 3.0. This video capturing software is much better than the software that ships with the ATI All-In-Wonder. The scheduler within the software is much better as well.

- Ulead VideoStudio 7.0. This software is the closest to the look-n-feel that I experienced on the Macintosh platform (iMovie 3). It's a really nice, complete video capturing/editing/sharing package. It also has very flexible text editing tools so I can now insert text within the video itself, just the pros do!

Here's a 60-minute sample of what I've come up with so far... It's the intro for the Japanese super hero series Kikaida. I captured it at full DVD resolution (4:3 ratio), clipped out some garbage frames, added some text, then ripped it to 480x480 MPEG-2 in SVCD format. The text I added is at the 42-second mark, and says:

VIDEO CAPTURE BY groink
http://www.macgeek.org/jdrama/

Check it out! I'd like to receive some feedback on the capture. The broadcast itself is somewhat bad seeing it was produced in 1973. I'll try to work with something a lot cleaner and more recent (ex: Hotman). But in the meantime, I'd like to see if the brightness/contrast is clear, and the KIKU-TV subtitles are still clear and readable, especially if the small "i" letter still look like the letter "i" rather than the letter "l".

Thanks!

Thanks for this tip. I recently got an AIW card and was shocked at how clunky the video capture sofware was - like 2nd rate freeware. I didn't think of looking for another package though (baka mitai!) so thanks for the tip I'll check this out. Good luck with your captures!

Try right-clicking on the link, then Save target as...

WMP kinda chokes when trying to play off my web site as it downloads. It is better to download the whole file first to hard disk.

If I had to guess its some kind of adware or spyware. I'd get Ad-Aware 6.0 from www.download.com.

I could be wrong though ^_^
hope it solves your problem

Along with Ad-Aware, you might want to download and install Spybot as well... Sometimes a single program like Ad-Aware can't catch all the spyware that's floating around on the 'net... Smile

(BTW, Spybot is free as well. Big Grin )

1) Hm that's strange. Maybe you deleted the shortcut by accident? Check if it's in the recycle bin. If not, you can just make a shortcut yourself. Run Search in the start menu and search for "winword.exe" without the quotes. When it's found, right click on it and select create shortcut.

2) Are you using internet explorer? If so try the following.
- goto Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings and uncheck all the boxes
- close and restart IE
I had the same problem with my university's website. That solved the problem.
