I spent the first eleven years of my life in Hawaii (unfortunately, I haven't been back in decades; pretty baka, huh?). I still remember having ozoni and kuromame for breakfast and sashimi, kalua pig, and makizushi for dinner on New Year's Day. But I have even more vivid memories of the fireworks on New Year's Eve. Non-locals cannot really imagine how big and loud and bright and festive New Year's Eve is in Hawaii. As others have mentioned, one of the things that is different about Hawaii from the mainland is the participatory nature of everyone from small kids to great-grandparents in the lighting and shooting of mass quantities of fireworks. Unbelievably mass quantities from what I remember. By the way, with the recent law requiring permits to buy fireworks and the limitations on how much a person can purchase with the permit, has there been a noticeable decrease in fireworks activity?

i forget what the limit is, but i don't think it's too strictly enforced. instead of going door-to-door (nearly impossible), they've beefed up enforcement at the borders. they've been looking for large shipments of illegal fireworks into the state.

yes, i have noticed a decrease in activity. though, in some areas, you can't really tell. hopefully, new year's will bring a LOT of tradewinds. when there's no winds blowing, you can't believe how bad it can get. several people with asthma have died!
Not telling ya!

actually, weather's usually pretty cold (by hawaii standards) during new year's, but if there's no wind, then the smoke's not gonna move. since we have some mountain ranges here, if you're in the valley, the smoke can get pretty thick, and for those w/ asthma.... Shake Head

well, but hawaii residents will always want their fireworks - and pop it too!

In my family, it's traditional to have cornbread and black-eyed peas on New Year's Day. It's an old (American) Southern tradition. Supposedly, eating that food on New Year's will bring good luck. My mom (who lives in another state) always calls to make sure I ate my black-eyed peas and cornbread! LOL!

Here, most people party with their friends on New Year's Eve, and then spend New Year's Day nursing their hangovers and watching football (err...American football, that is, not soccer) on TV.

Manny,

New Year's on the Island sounds cool. Sounds a lot like the way we celebrated the 4th of July in New York when I was a kid.

Everybody on the the block had their own fireworks. It was a blast.

Can't happen here in Northern California. Cops would be on you in a heart beat. And they're right to. This place is a tinderbox in the summer. But I do miss everybody standing out in the street as soon as the sun went down, to shoot off whatever they had.

New Year's on the mainland?

Wake up. Slam back as many aspirin as I can handle, and then the Cotton Bowl, the Gator Bowl, and hope by the time the Fiesta Bowl starts my vision has cleared up enough so that I can actually see what's going on.

Happy New Year, folks.
