1. Wow, WAY better than I thought! [Rating: 8/10]
Contrary to the theme of the drama, I wish I had been transported to the future so that this review would already be written. I have no idea how to begin.

I guess I can start with the easiest first, which is the cast. I absolutely adore Kubozuka Yosuke, who won me over with his role as the King in IWGP. Although his hair was completely whack in this drama, he did a fine job. Ifm not a huge fan of Tokiwa Takao, having seen her in only one drama, but she really sucked me in. I loved her portrayal of the character and she was definitely the thread that wove the plot with the characters. The people who were playing the students were okay. I mean, you have teenagers playing teenagers without a whole lot of substance. How hard can it be? Still, Tsumabuki Satoshi and Yamada Takayuki were quite believable, where poor YamaPi was a huge disappointment.

The genre of this drama is definitely Sci-Fi, so if youfre not into that sorta thing, you may want to steer thing. I really enjoyed the drama. Besides the fact that the girls maintained their make-up, that the kids survived on barely nothing, that some plot elements were a little too gout thereh, I thought the story was handled very well and the writers definitely got their point across. The drama was very gripping in the beginning. Granted, the 2.5 episodes revolving around Asamifs life-death situation was kinda lame (a little too unrealistic) and boring. I was really disappointed when Misaki got killed. I even cried. Ifm not quite sure if I liked the ending. I know that Asami CALLING Misaki started the domino affect that would change everything, but really, it kind of belittled what the students had gone through. Ifm a little uncertain about the end.

Doesnft matter tho, because overall I enjoyed the drama, and regardless of all the bad reviews, Ifd definitely recommend it to people tiring of the regular, standard, blue-printed drama.

2. WTF?! [Rating: ?/10]
The title does NOT say anything at all about the drama. In the end they mentioned something about the relevance of a long love letter but that was in the end.
I was hesitant to watch the drama but I heard some good reviews so I said why not see for myself. It starts out as a typical romantic story. Boy meets girl in the beginning and by some chance lost contact with each other. So a year later boy becomes teacher and girls works in a flower shop. Boy had some interesting students who had love stories of their own. During winter vacation boy asks some of his students to come to school for remedial class. That day it so happens Girl goes to school to deliver flowers and bumps into boy again. They have a little catching up and ends up in a quarrel about each others personalities until girl walks away only to stop and speaks to boy about that day they met a year ago. Their romantic story is about to start again until a quake happens....
This is when you find out that the whole school disappeared and warps into the future somehow.
Interesting story, kinda reminds me of LOST, a TV series in the US. Everybody learns how to fight for survival in this new futuristic world while the love ones they leave behind cope with their loss. I like how the creator of the drama envisions a totally different future not of technological advancement but instead the end of the world because of technology and global wars. The whole story makes you wonder that it is possible that the world can end up that way.
The ending was open to interpretation, it wasn't a happy ending nor a sad ending. Throughout the series not everybody survives and some of my favorite characters dies. But does anybody survive at all? Like I said the ending is open to interpretation.

3. Unusually unique [Rating: 9/10]
Long Love Letter is not for everyone. The theme (human survival: physically and emotionally) is brought in role playing games style: world destruction due to humans wrong conduct on the environment.

*** spoiler warning ***

I particularly like the storytelling: it jumped back and forth to the future and today, and also flashbacks, to reveal each character's story and the loss brought to the ones they left behind. Just like puzzles, that I think, would not appeal and be confusing if this drama was shown one episode per week since I would run out of patience.

Mainly covered by despair and depressing atmosphere throughout, at times can be funny, the drama slowly built hope and positive stance towards life, to live today, tomorrow and the future. Regardless the slow pace at times, this is a unique and refreshing drama.

Tokiwa Takako (Misaki Yuka) and Kubozuka Yousuke (Asami) were good actors as always. Misaki's cheerful and optimistic nature balances the gloomy mood. Asami, although obviously younger and did look too young to be a teacher but it worked!, was calm but rather mysterious since he didn't have anyone left behind. The students were also interesting, each one has story to tell, that sadly weren't explored enough.

4. Creepy as hell [Rating: 9/10]
Seriously I don't know about you guys... but this drama creeped the hell out of me. Maybe it's because I'm always way too immersed when I watch dramas...

I loved Yosuke in here, he acting was superb and his character was also very lovable. I didn't really like Takako here though... Her character lacked charisma.

The storyline is top-notch... not to mention the fact that it's adapted from one of the most famous Japanese horror manga. Other than being suspenseful, it is a story that really leaves an impact on you. Before watching this drama, I wasn't really environmentally-conscious, but now I seriously stop and think before I casually throw an empty bottle into a non-recycling bin. Also it made me realize how much I actually love life.

It's a drama I'd definitely recommend... you'll get something out of it for sure. The overall tone of the drama is pretty depressing though... especially the moments when it's trying to expose the ugly part of humanity. It's not a drama to watch if you're just looking for something light and pleasant...
Even the ending doesn't offer much hope to the whole situation... which makes you cherish what you have right now even more.

5. Great story, great acting, 5 years too early [Rating: 8/10]
I'm a big fan of both Kubozuka and Tokiwa, so I was really looking forward to watching this series. Kubozuka simply cannot disappoint, and Tokiwa was great as usual. It was an unique series that I really enjoyed. Most of the characters developed really well, and there were quite a few touching scenes.
It's just mind-boggling how young actors in this series like Yamada Takayuki, YamaP, Tsumabuki, Karina etc have become big-name today. What an all-star galore!

However... I must say that CG/SFX were horrible, and it turned out really fakey. Another thing was that, I felt the connection between the "present" and the "future" were unnecessary and outright stupid. I know this is based on a manga series, but they should've only focused on the "future". The "human 2.0" was really stupid as well.

Had they fixed couple of plotholes, removed manga stupidity, and made this series around now with way better SFX (and possibly higher budget), it would've been a masterpiece.

6. Apocalyptic future? Possibilities not discussed [Rating: 7/10]
I have mixed feelings about this drama...on one hand, its different and nothing like any j-drama I've ever seen and for its exactly that reason, I thought it was a bit pedestrian in the possibilities the plot presented. With such important themes such as how we use resources, the inability of man to live beside each other, conservation etc, it seemed a waste to not extend these themes. Also, it was simply depressing to have so little communication between the "now" and the "future" people because had there been a stronger link, it would've given more hope and comfort to both sides. Also, talent went unused - Kubosuka, usually an intimidating tough guy was given little room to really let go and barely did anything to really motivate his students - this coming from a guy who jumped from a building in real life! Tokiwa upstaged him easily. I'd choose Battle Royale over this survival-of-the-fittest drama any day.

8. Cheesy sci-fi, excellent characterization [Rating: 8/10]
As a science fiction story, I'd say this story is mostly a failure. The time elements are arbitrary and seem to exist only for plot convenience, the nature of the future inhabitants is trite and unsurprising. The only sci-fi aspect that worked for me was the multi-world stuff at the very end. I don't mind the cheesy effects at all. I'm a fan of Blake's 7 and Dr. Who, so I'm used to ignoring poor effects.

I love this drama to pieces. Objectively, I give it an 8, but subjectively it's a 10. I really love the interpersonal dynamics. Kubozuka and Tokiwa act rings around their teenaged companions, but for once the teenagers are doing a pretty good job too. The jumps between past and present help build the tension over whether the school's inhabitants will ever make it home. I thought the ending was very satisfying.

9. Weak [Rating: 3/10]
The series was just rerun on Japanese TV during July 2005.

Paper thin plot with some characters thrown in to make the series reach 11 parts.

The female character wearing the red outfit and a sheer black dress... why would she have a 9mm semi automatic? Why didn't some of the guys slap her in the her while she was sleeping?

The girl with the dud leg hobbling in the middle of nowhere... What value did she add to the story?

Why were the other Asians portrayed as bad guys with terrible eating habits?

Personally I would have prefer that the school was teleported to some alien world to be enslaved. At least that would have given the story some credibility.

Do not buy this turkey... borrow it from a friend.

I nearly didn't want to watch after reading the reviews here but luckily I didn't. I think it's exciting, touching, romantic, adventurous, gripping, I enjoyed watching the whole thing. You just want to keep watching to see what happens next, although I admit I don't like the ending, or rather, don't understand at all. But putting the ending aside, this is a rather profound show revealing human nature. And I simply love Yosuke, he has grown up and is so cute and charming. All the other casts are great too!

Boy meets girl. Things happen. Nine or ten episodes later, boy gets girl. Throw in a time travelling post-apocalyptic backdrop (though not like Terminator or Twelve Monkeys stuff), then think Lost meets The Martian Chronicles meets The Planet of the Apes meets The Day After. Or something like that. Definitely not for everyone, but entertaining for me, with a sci-fi eerieness and suspense to keep me gladly hanging on for more.

I liked this dorama and I thought that it was very interesting and had interesting plot. It's a very meaningful dorama making you thinking twice about cherishing the time you have right now and living at this moment - hima o ikiroh. Say and do what you want 'now' or else you'll regret it. Because we always think that "I'll just do it later or someday..". We take for granted that we will be living forever until we grow old, so we have other chances. But that's not always the case.
It's also showing us how future can be like if we don't start taking care of the world now, by not throwing garbage on the streets and stuff. Also taking care of the wonderful nature.. and not wasting it.

It was very touching and beautiful, the dorama. It was about survival, to keep on living and hoping for a reason to stay alive. They realized that they have to change the past to not make the future fail because of wars between humen. But even though I enjoyed the series all the way, I was, as many others, disappointed by the end. I barely understood what happened. Just that the letters reached their present world which made Asami-san to change his mind and asking Misaki-san to meet with him - Asami didn't lost his cellphone..- which then probably changed the future of them traveling to the future and blah.. It was really weird and confusing. I think that the series should have continued a bit longer, a couple more episodes, to be able to make it more clearer with a different and better ending. Because I think that the plot was really interesting. It was something odd which I have never seen before. I was always excited to see what was going to happen next episode..

Other than the ending, I liked this dorama. It's definitely a must-see recommended dorama. Maybe I should give this a 8.5/10 instead of just 8..

Ok, the title and description didn't prepare me in any way for what this story was all about. It's a postapocalypse, peppered with a few supernatural elements but not as many to drown the very realistic, human main concern. It's about environment and responsibilities, about human nature and human bonds. We get a variety of more or less interesting characters and plotlines as well as a pretty open plot. The scifi elements are more than cheap but the real issues get through. Although the developments may not be to everybody's liking and are almost left too open (especially the ending is rather ambiguous and leaves one wondering about it's good and bad points), but the drama certainly is timely and provokes thought.

This drama is special. It had messages to teach us about life and I find it really meaningful. It might not be the best if you're looking for action, romance or basically everything that a normal drama should have but I'll give it a high score nonetheless for all that I've learned from this drama itself.

In fact,I think everyone should watch this.Lessons like cherishing the little things in life when something as common as rain could be a much celebrated affair; we could regret saying something or even not saying anything at all,so say it while we can and treat those around us nicer...All these learnings and so much more, I think this drama made me more aware and appreciate my surroundings.

I gave this an 8 but I rewatched it recently and I loved it even more. I had to change my rating as I finally understood the end as well. HereLs what I wrote initially: I like "out of the box" ideas so this one about a time-travelling highschool works fine for me. A weird story, nice reflexions on humanity, the recurring theme of lost love, a cute closing song and some good (and some good-looking) actors is entertaining enough for me. The last episode is a bit confusing, as if the scriptwriters wished to give us a happyend albeit this only works on the personal level of the protagonists not on the underlying topic of total environmental destruction.
7. Comments by Susan [Rating: 7/10]
This was... an od drama. I started watching it because Kubozuka Yosuke stars as Asami Akio. I kept watching because I was curious what would happen in the end. I was disappointed. It was a very inconclusive ending. Not until after the credits do you see the desert turn to a garden. But was that because of their letter, and what happened to Tokyo? Throughout the series, although I enjoyed everyone's performances at the beginning, I became very depressed. The ending did little to alleviate that. Usually I don't mind the shortness of Japanese drama.s In this case, I'm annoyed that we find out no more.

Okay, watched it because of Yamapi, but he didn't have a big roll. It's very different, not another love story but sience fiction and it was actually VERY good. I'm no fan of this sort but I got goose bumps, not used to it. I was both scared and very happy and I cried a lot. It was very very very cute, had a little love, a little life and excitment. At first it was normal, then weird, then confusing (ok all the time) and then very touching and understandable. cool.

I JUST finished this drama and it left me with mix feelings. Half the time when I was watching it, I felt extremely uncomfortable. This survival theme drama is definitely not my favorite. I think manage to watch it all was to see if they ever got back to the future and for Satoshi, Yosuke, Yamapi and Yamada. I really really dislike Tokiwa Takako. This show is pretty interesting as it uses the mystery effect to pull viewers in, and it gets really touching too at some parts. Kubozuka Yosuke gave a very good performance here; in fact I'm really moved by his acting at times as the good role model sensei but is really emotionally weak. If anything, this drama is worth watching only because Yosuke is in it. The ending is a bit confusing though.

In the end, I was keeping my fingers crossed for all the stranded characters. But of course, I believe that the whole dissapearing school story was just a hypothesis and a visual concept on what could happen if we continue to destroy the environment.

Though most people found this storyline very weird, I thought it was a good story about treasuring many things in life. I agree, though, there were some pretty weird stuff going on in the story. But many times I ended up crying with the characters when they felt like there was no way out. The romance between the teacher and flower girl wasn't bad either ^^!

It is weird. Beginning was kinda interesting. But it just gets weirder and weirder. The producers of this drama weren't really thinking of what kind of audience they wanted to attract. It's not really a romance, despite it's name, but it's not enough to pull in male viewers either. I'm gonna try finishing this drama and then maybe my rating will change.

very different and somewhat weird like at the end wtf? what happened? it's not like miman city. hahaha. a mixture of romance and sci fi except it's not really sci fi but somewhat because of the whole earthquake thing and the hotel, putting that can opener there. wtf? but yosuke's hot so fuck the story. hahaha. watch it if you like yosuke!

First of all, I know this isn't a drama that everyone will love. As for me, I definitely appreciated its message about our world and our environment. Also, I think this is the only drama I've ever seen that had sci-fi elements in it, but it was done wonderfully. I love the lesson that was taught at the end, especially since it's so true.

I randomly chose to watch this drama, because that guy from GTO, ping pong, Go etc was in it. I wasn't expecting something so Sci-Fi to happen! That was a complete shocker for me. It had lots of eyecandy for those that are interested. It was pretty good, first SciFi Japanese Drama I have ever watched. It was cute but not a classic

Oh dear, this is dire. When science fiction is done badly, it is really bad. Nothing makes sense, explanations appear from nowhere, the school kids are a bunch of interchangable non-acting Johhny's and idols, people's actions are completely arbitrary, and the writing stinks. I fast forwarded through most of it.

Long love letter is sad and emotional at the same time because the main characters were in their schools and think it's going to be normal but for an unknown reason, they were sent to the future. There was something simular to this drama but this is a really sad drama that brings people to tears.

The hokuto no ken of Jdorama. Nightmarish visions of a near-fututre and end of humanity Vs. a trapped school lost in a time hole. for sci-fi geeks, this is heaven. Its really sad, so for those with weak hearts, avoid. Still, the ending made it up for all the misery I went through watching this!

It's such a unbelievable story! But still it's not bad... It just makes me feel so scared when I'm watching this show.. It's like real that the people have reached the future where everything was gone!! Eeery.. Hahaha. Not a bad drama, with all the youngsters like Yamashita Tomohisa and so..

not a 10 because the ending wasn't that good but for the new aspect of this drama. It" s unique and they tried something. Two good points: the music of the ending and the contrast that it brings to the drama and the way they deal with the drama. Kubozuka sometimes exagerate in his acting.

Very unexpected drama for it's title, it still held some very good moments. This alternate-reality based drama is bound to make you think about a lot of different things but mainly about human relationships and survival situations.

Interesting and recommended! (Nice cast!)

I've never seen such a drama that contains lots of science-fiction details like this.
Although there're plot holes, the story is yet interesting and meaningful, especially at this moment where Global Warming and other environmental problems are taken into concern.

Even the ending was kind of shocking.. but out of all the story was really unique and exciting. I couldn't put down the dorama for even one minute! It has an abosolute great cast!!!! Yosuke was the best in that! He has my recognition since this dorama! Love it!

you know the series really builds it up and it seems like it's really good. but the ending is so lame and such a flop, i'd seriously discourage anyone from seeing this. you'll enjoy it and once it ends you'll realize you wasted a lot of time on it. :/ oh well.

Long Love Letter is one of the best Japanese TV dramas. The unusal plot on environmental concerns is timely. Through the story, you understand the meaning and the value of love and every minute which passes us by.. The whole ensemble cast should be praised for their acting. I would like to add a credit to Yamashita Tomohisa, my favourite Japanese singer and actor, for his improving acting skill. I am glad that he took part in this wonderful piece of drama. It's worth to add that the soundtrack and music scores are very beautiful....

A dorama which i can't compare with others dorama i have seen before. science fiction is a part of this, but i think that's marginal. the relationships and message of this story is more important. very touching and sad moments. soundtrack is ok, beside "loveland, island" by yamashita tatsuro - it fit's perfectly. the end is open to interpret, but i think there is a happy end.

This drama is kakkoiii!!! I never thought that Yosuke could be this handsome!!! Bought this because of Tokiwa, didn't expect it to be this good, and I even discovered the cutie Yosuke!!! Tokiwa was, as always, beautiful and good. For those who hasn't watched this, go and get your ass over this drama!!!

First sci-fi drama i ever watch but it was prettu satisfying. It made me cry and wonder alot. The ending is a bit errr....it could have been better. it just doesnt make sense. Other than that, you should really give this drama a try.

The drama has an excellent plot. After watching this drama, we should all have some serious thinking on how to love the earth. When there is something we need to do, we should act right away instead of leaving it on tomorrow.

ha...only voting for this because Yamada Takayuki was in it!! Without him, I wouldn't give this drama my vote!!!! For those that don't know, the manga was based on the character he portrayed..
