This looks like kids' drawing though. My guess it's left overs from WWII, with grand-parents and parents teaches kids to hate people they never even met.
It's just racism. Smack!

Shameful Cry man, when would they ever stop this stupid racism?
between whites and black or korean and japanese and stuff? and i heard that many koreans call japanese people "pigfootjaps (not to offendd anyone) because of their zoori sandals

I wish it could be soon... Puppy Dog Eyes

Did you took the pictures yourself? It looks like a classroom.

Anyway, found those conflicts:
Battle of Hakusukinoe in 663
Battle of Kouan 1281
Joseon Dynasty of Korea invaded Tsushima in 1419
Seven-Year War 1592 to 1598
Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) in Korea
Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905) in Korea

Found some nice article too: Japan and South Korea's troubled relations (2001)

A lotta Asian countries despise Japan because of Japanese Imperialism from the early 1900's up to the end of WWII.

Japanese history guy Kitakaze can elaborate.

Um...erm...yeah. My favorite part of Japanese history, right? *sound of cicada*

For Korea, it has mainly to do with Japan's annexation of Korea in 1910 as a protectorate, supposedly until it reached sufficient national strength to compete with the West. But really, they tried to "Japanify" Korea. During WWII, they took some Korean women to be "comfort women," and forced some Korean men to serve with the Japanese in battle.

I don't want to say anyone suffered any less, but compared to China, Korea did get off relatively easy during Japan's imperialism. And without justifying it, Japan did exactly what all the other imperialist powers did. Everyone seems to forget the rape and pillaging by British troops in China during the Opium Wars.

I think the best thing for the Japanese government to do, is acknowledging aggression in World War II, the various war crimes committed, and and official Diet apology. Will that help? I don't know. Those Korean children are probably expressing feelings hammered into them by South Korean government propaganda. Remember, South Korea hasn't been a democracy for very long.

Yeah. I'm a Canadian of Filipino descent, and it seems that some countries have held strong feelings longer than others. I know that the Philippines suffered the same sort of treatment from Japan during WWII: comfort women, etc... But during my stay in the Philippines, I felt no anti-Japanese feeling whatsoever.

My parents even joke about the stereotype that Filipino women go to Japan to become dancers and the like. But when it comes to things that are Japanese, the Philippines seem indifferent. Japanese products represent quality, endurance. Japanese culture has become somewhat integrated in parts of the Philippines. For example, my mother's dialect has Japanese words integrated into the language. "Honto" and "Ne" are often used.

It's just a human fact that people hate, maybe one day we can move beyond these grudges. For example, we don't hold a grudge towards Germany anymore. We acknowledge that it was the Nazis that committed the crimes. We should acknowledge the fact that it was a different Emperor, who may have been erronous in his thinking, and a different government. I hope one day Asia can learn to forgive.

It's the whole WWII thing that made people harbor some sort of animosity towards Japan. Can't really speak for any other countries except for China and Malaysia cos I know history well - but the Japanese had done some pretty cruel things in their time of war.

For China, that was the Nanking massacre where they killed nearly half a million Chinese - treated them like animals and even used them for target-shooting practice. No woman was safe - young and old alike. This applied to Malaysia as well when when grandmother's neighbour's child, who was a mere 10 years-old, was raped so hard that her pelvis bones broke and she died. And not to mention my great-great uncle, who was killed and tortured in front of his family because he refused to reveal the British camp (he was betrayed by people who saw him helping a couple of British soldiers), which subsequently caused the death of my great-great grandfather who had a heart attack. And the soldiers just laughed and laughed, and by some miracle, my grandmother was spared from harm, probably because she was dressed up as a boy to protect herself.

It was just a lot of bad history - it's almost like how the Nazis were towards the European side - it was war and everyone was cruel.

But the era is sort of past - it's just that the older generation could not forget. My grandmother objected so strongly to my parents' marriage because my father is a graduate of Waseda University and spent almost 10 years in Japan. Older people tended to view the Japanese as evil because of they had suffered under the Japanese occupation.

Just my two cents.

Difference with the Nazis is that the Germans did acknowledge what they did. The Japanese did not.

That's why the Koreans and Chinese (mostly older generations) "despise" the Japanese because the Japanese government never acknowledged their cruelties in public or made a formal apology. On top of that, they've been teaching fake history that glorifies their actions till even today: IMO that's worst part.

So yeah, I don't blame the people for not knowing. I've had this conversation with a Japanese friend of mine and she was shocked to learn about it.

The problem isn't forgiving, the problem is that the Japanese authorities are lying on purpose, even to their own citizens.

Might I also add that during Japan's occupation of Korea at this time, Koreans were forced to speak Japanese and refrain from speaking Korean in their own country! Many of the sex slaves that were used in accomodating the Japanese Imperial army, a majority of them did come from Korea. Over the years after WWII, Japan has done much to attone for their imperialistic aggression in the form of reparations, aid, and of course adopting a pacifist position within their constitution that prevents Japan from attacking another country save for the reason of defending their own country. But I believe what annoys Korea (and other countries such as China that were on the receiving end of Japan's aggression) is not just the past but Japan's relunctance to fully acknowledge the history of what happened during that time. There were recent textbooks approved for schools in Japan that kind of glosses over Japan's aggression during the war. Some other textbooks (i am not sure if these were used in the classroom) even border on the actual justification of Japan's imperialism just as Tu-tricky mentioned the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. But granted any prideful powerful country like Japan is not going to want to look like the bad guy in their history books. A good example is the US in the Vietnam War - during our bombing raids there we killed millions of Vietnamese and Cambodians during this time. We of course acknowledge the deaths but more often so than not we focus more on the loss of American lives and not too much the damage we inflicted ourselves. Well don't want to go off on a tangent - another sore point (within the past couple of years) is prime minister Koizumi's annual visits to the Yasukuni shrine which honors Japan's war dead which some people feel doesn't make Japan's repeated apologies in the past seem sincere. But anyway, don't want to end this abruptly but...I'm just taking a break from watching football.

well it is true that japan has done a few questionable things like the changing of their history syllabus and the PM's shrine visit, unlike Germany who has apologise repeatedly over the years for their past action. But one often forgotten fact is that in their own ways they have helped to rebuilt the region. They are one of the biggest suppliers of aids to the region usually one of the first to do so. For example they are still contributing alot of aids to china despite China's rising economic clout.

I guess the problems usually lies with the nationalistic few who might be bigot or racist? Or perhaps such anti-sentimentality might be a ploy of a bigger agenda from their politician.

Anyway i think for a lot of us, we have managed to put down all these bad feelings, Smile the world is full of too many beautiful things to go around hating someone forever right Bleah

One thing is to make sure that people don't forget, but it's another thing to point an accusing finger at the current generation who really had nothing to do with it aside from being of Japanese descent.

Another thread on the way the rest of Asia sees Japan as?

I'll review the previous thread and if the contents of debate are more or less found to be in a similar fashion, the two threads will be merged.

i agree wholeheartedly...but it's so retarded if you ask the current generation of japanese they don't know jack fuckin' shiet because they aren't taught it in their history classes...to say that current generations of japanese textbooks publish a revisionist view of history would be an understatement.

just to re-emphasize...i agree, DON'T expect ppl to forget that shiet...if you do you are high on fuggin' twelve vials of crack....i.e. jewish efforts seeking reparations from Swiss banks and other European institutions.....
