Thanks for the heads-up. And yt, especially, thanks for that interview.

hmmm.

Drat. I am really not a fan of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's movies. He always makes great looking movies, and he always gets terrific actors and actresses to play in them. But the movies... I'm not a fan.

I guess I"ll just have to watch Loft with the subtitles turned off.

Jeez, I love that Miki is having so much success in the movies!

In case folks weren't paying attention, there's a new subbed copy of the Keizoku TV Special: Phantom" up at D-Addicts.

It's listed as the Director's cut, the video quality is superb, and the English subs are very good.

Miki Nakatani's Dead Run to be shown at AFI Film Festival 2005

Shuji reacts passively to everything: his brotherfs aggression, his parentsf indifference and the confession of a guilt-ridden priest. He feels powerless to act until Eri, an enigmatic girl obsessed with running, leaves their small town for Tokyo and Shuji is compelled to follow her.

DEAD RUN tells the story of Shuji, a disillusioned young Japanese boy whose family is falling apart. Desperate to find some meaning and purpose to his life, Shuji befriends a priest who has come to town to set up a church. Shuji finds comfort in the Bible and the rituals of Christianity, despite his older brotherfs insistence that the priest is a murderer. And it is in the church that Shuji meets Eri.

Shujifs search for Eri takes him into Tokyofs criminal underworld, unleashing an uncertain future that is void of morality and the love that Shuji is so desperate to secure.

bijin and yt

You are jewels!

I just got my copy of Miki's "Train Man" (with English subs) so you can see how far behind I am. -- Drives me nuts.-- (By the way, loved the movie, gave up on the series two episodes in.)

And thanks for the trailer for Kikaware Matsuko. Man that looks cool!

Oh, and thanks for the picture. I don't have that one.

And thanks and thanks and thanks.

yt

Quick note, probably too late... watch Keizoku the series before watching the specials or the movie (Beautiful Dreamer).

There are so many inside jokes, and continued plot lines that I think you'd miss half the fun if the first thing you saw was the special.

An English subbed version of Keizoku is currently the series of the week at d-addicts. The picture isn't great because it comes off a vcd copy. But the subs are good.

There was some talk about someone taking the subs from the copy being offered, and attaching them to a quality DVD copy... but it's been a couple of months, and nothing's happened yet, so who knows.

The same goes for Takako Tokiwa & Kou Shibasaki.
1liter no namida girl,Erika Sawajiri,she's doing movies too,not dramas.
Not to mention about Yuya Yagira or Masanobu Ando,Stardust Promotion seems to be putting more effort into films than TV shows.

Takayuki Yamada is exceptional tho.

I've just found this on "Composite" Editor Sugatsuke Masanobu's Tokyo Culture Diary

August 10 (Fri)(2005)

In the evening I'm at the Brazilian Embassy's official residence in Yoyogi-Uehara, where Sakamoto Ryuichi and Paula and Jacques Morelenbaum give an 'invitations only' concert. It's a promotion for their album "Casa," which was recorded at the home of Antonio Carlos Jobim, and contains covers of his compositions. Jobim's "Wave" is among my Top 3 albums, and I really enjoy the trio's homage to this great artist.

The complex is located in a high class residential area, and this event offers the rare pleasure to hear Sakamoto play Jobim, while holding a cocktail in one hand and marvelling at the spaceous mid-century style residence. At this occasion I'm meeting kimono-dressed Nakatani Miki, whom I haven't seen for a long time. At first I mistakenly took her for an elder lady who resembles Nakatani, since she was just too perfectly styled. She says she's listening to "Casa" every day, and when I ask her how she's doing recently, she answers wittily, "no shootings at the moment - I'm jobless!"

Miki turned 30 last week... Beat You

Thanks for the commercial.

Re: movies over TV. In movies, the money is better, the opportunity to do better work is there, and the schedule is a lot easier to live with.

And remember, Japanese actors and actresses don't get much credit for doing Japanese TV.

When Koyuki got the role in "Last Samurai" she was referred to as a "newcomer". A model turned actress who did a suprizingly good job for someone with so little experience.

Of course, she'd had major roles in a dozen TV series before getting the movie, but in the minds of film people, that just didn't count.

And yeah, I bring that one up because Japanese Actors and Actresses want to do movies outside of Japan. HK, Korea, Hollywood. The Japanese studios and corporations simply don't pump the money into the Japanese film industry the way they do TV and anime. So the actors with ambition have to hope they hook on outside the country.

Being a TV star in Japan is probably a very good life. But being a big time movie star is the brass ring.

BMW

I'm working on pure memory (never a good idea) here, but I believe it was called "Life and Youth in Takarazuka".

It starred Miki, Ryoko, Yoshino Kimura, and Norika.

I remember seeing it on sale on ebay once but it didn't have subs so I didn't grab it in time.

As I recall, it was a 4 part special, focusing on each of the girls as they grew up in the Cabaret, the war years, and how they survived, and then what happened to them after.

Looks like the brain box is cranking on all cylinders, Geez: that's exactly the program I'm talking about... Thumbsup

Someone I traded with a ways back sent me this program and I was pretty elated, only to find that it was incomplete... I'll probably transfer it to disc anyways, just for archival purposes...
