There seems to be a lot of Singaporeans here, and I was wondering what the country is like. I've been watching this show called Money and it seems to be similar to america or canada in many ways, except cleaner, so much cleaner. I also know there are stricter laws there, anyways, I've done research, but can some people post info that'll help me decide if I want to visit someday.

Also, food, talk about food, that is the most important part of a country right?

what show called money?.. does it talk about singapore? Mr Green well, i've never been to america or canada so i can't compare, but, yes, it's clean, in the places where tourists go.. hehe though in residential areas it's not bad too.. and the fines do not affect our lives at all.. people say singapore is a fine country, we fine money for everything, but there really is no policeman waiting at the corner just hoping you'll make a mistake. there is no fine for chewing gum, it is not illegal to chew gum, but illegal to spit that gum anywhere if i'm not wrong.. well, not really sure about all these fines thing because if you don't do it, nothing will happen to you.

stricter laws probably mean death penalties for drug trafficking, or if you possess drugs.. valdalism also cause for serious punishment (like that michael fay incident in '94)

singapore as you know, is a multiracial country.. the 4 main races being chinese, malays, indians and eurasians. we have small communities of dutch, japanese, americans etc. but those are not really counted.. our population is about 4 million, which is rather big for a country so small in land area.. chinese make up 70-over% of the population so you'll see more chinese on the streets, except if you go to little india, for example. Mr Green

as for food, well.. a mixture of everything actually.. you can all kinds of food here.. chinese (different provinces of chinese food), indian (north and south), malay, indonesian, thai, japanese, the usual fast food restaurants like macdonald's, kfc, burger king.. well someone can do better than me for this part.. Sweat

that's it i guess, what else do you want to know?

Haha arashinokoto... u can go be Singapore's ambassador Big Grin Big Grin

Anyway... yeah being a Singaporean myself... I'm feelin kinda lucky to be staying here 'cos it's quite prosperous compared to other countries in our region. Quite an urban country... not many suburban areas, unless you want to count in our offshore islands... which is ... not much.

The laws don't affect me all that much. I mean, i don't steal, I don't vandalise, so nothing happens to me. As arashinokoto said, the Michael Fay incident. I suppose that incident gave you guys a very bad impression on Singaporean laws. Last I heard, there were some Americans out there who ruled out Singapore as a holiday destination 'cos they'd heard of the Michael Fay incident and thought that the punishment he got was too harsh.

Yes, Singapore is clean compared to other countries... one thing you'd notice is that.. SIngapore has many high rise flats... 'cos it's soooo teeny and has to squeeze in 4 million people. It is a FOOD AND SHOPPING haven too... you really have to go to this place called Orchard Road when u come here!

I love local food...!!! Bleah

talking abt food.. singapore's the food paradise of south-east asia.. or i dare say asia... especially the home cooked malay food i got frm my malay neighbour recently during hari raya.. yum, no other variety of cooked rice has so much effort put into cooking it (bet there were over 10 different ingredients in it except u cant even tell physically but only by ur tastebuds and smell) , except mebe some variant of rice used in indian dishes... Beaten be sure to eat till u go bust or numb with all the spices or essence if u ever do visit..hehe Naughty..

Money? Haha! Yeah, i watched that show too! I like it alot! But where did u manage to watch it?
Btw arashinokoto, that 'Money' drama was a show featured Pierre Png! I think it was aired like 3-4 years ago.

Anyway, Singapore is quite happening for the night life. You can go to CHIJMES, Boat Quay, Clark Quay, etc.
For FOOD... You MUST try the food at Newton Circus! They have all sorts of local dishes from chinese style to seafood...and they're extremely delicious! *drool*

It's quite easy for you to get around here too coz practically everybody speaks english here.

One thing i hate abt Singapore is the hectic working schedule and environment and also the education system! Well, the education system is good indeed but in my personal opinion, they're killing you by stressing and adding pressure.

But overall, i'm comfortable living here. And when i go to some other countries for holidays... i do learn to appreciate what i have here in Singapore. It's really safe here but then again...Low crime doesn't mean No crime! And i love it alot for being a clean city!

As for the people here... Well, i'm not gonna start praising that the people here are polite and crap coz i experience some hiccups as well. But yeah, usually tourists here usually get nice treatments!

It comes on a channel that shows telvision and movies from all over the world, alot of news programs, and it shows unsubbed jdorama, an epsode per week and anime three or four times per week. Money is a great show.

Anyways, thanks everyone for answering my questions, and I got some more if you don't mind, like what languages are spoken, should I go there with some understanding of chinese or malay? And what is the weather like? I heard it is hot.

hot, yeah.. cos we r juz 100km away frm the equater.. erm, i think most tourist spots have aircons (more common) or those fans (especially sentosa island - its a theme park island) fans that blow with cooling water droplets for ppl who cant stand the heat. Angry and since the temperature's abt the same the whole year, u can come practically any time.. but if u really are particular abt heat, come during November or December (its raining everyday this time Sweat )

knowledge of chinese or malay's not needed (but if u really want, lots of ppl here can teach u some) cos its more like the ppl who only know chinese or malay asking ppl for directions

Language is not a problem. Most Singaporean speak english only except those older generation. Because we're a multi-racial country, since young, we are taught english in school.

Yeah, Singapore is warm. Therefore we had a lot of places which is air-conditioned. We're call a air-con city. LOL. Those air-conditioned place are shopping centres, buses, bus interchanges, trains, trains station, homes etc.

Air-con city... Mr Green Well, we're a garden city yo! Lot's of trees along the roads, in the kerbs between the roads.. everywhere! Oh, and if you're going to the city (the business and shopping districts like Orchard Road or the Civic District) from the airport, you'll be able to see that famous row of trees with the overlapping canopy that always greet visitors when they come (that's why lot's of tourists say we're a garden city... Sweat )

There are many little islands surrounding the main island of Singapore (literally very little) but some are worth visiting for visitors: Sentosa (island life, love it! hehe ) Kusu island, St John's etc etc Oh, and Pulau Ubin provide a rustic feel juz like Singapore in the old days. Love to cycle in that place. But now there are some renovation going on so part of the beach is gone Sad If you're the adventurous type you can try enrolling in the local Outward Bound too... although I heard it's super easy compared to those offered overseas... Sweat

Takuya_angel: yeah man, agree that the education system is a little demanding... but we must E(endure)!!! Even the pri school kids now are super stressed out, and the school syllabus are getting harder every year!

And yeah, the food here is really good!!! I love local food!!! Laksa, char kway teow (fried kway teow), hokkien mee... oh, if you drop by Singapore you must remember to try the local chilli or black pepper crab, the hainanese chicken rice, and the bak kut teh (literally meat bone tea Sweat -- it's pork ribs in soup and you can eat it with rice and chinese tea... and the soup is usually the main attraction in this dish). If you like spicy food then maybe you can try Punggol Seafood Restaurant's mee goreng (that's spicy noodles cooked Malay style.. really good!!!)

Ok, I'm hungry... Drooling
