This is what I thought too. I have heard too that he used the wooden sword because using a real one wasn't challenging enough for him and he didn't necessarily want to kill his opponent...just defeat him.
In theory...to combat Kojiro's long sword...Musashi could have just gotten one himself but instead he used the oar.
I remember in the Musashi series from the 80's, after Musashi defeated Kojiro I believe he checked to see if he was still alive and hoped that he survive.
Yes I think that too was one of the reasons he chose an oar to fight with Kojiro. Musashi was a very intelligent samurai.

Hi, this is my fist post I hope that i can write a lot in this forum
I think that Musashi used a wooden sword because he saw the spare oar and he like its lenght and it be useful to defeat KojiroLs style "Tsubame-gaeshi" .
Musashi used a wooden sword to defeat Yoshioka family I think that he only want to improbe into his "way of samurai" . I read about that on MusashiLs book Go Rin no Sho.
Yeah....that's him. The music/soundtrack was good in that one too. I thought the Otsu in this one was prettier than the most recent one. I know you'll kill me for saying that.
