Just finished watching the whole series in a day. Certainly this is not your regular drama. Seeing this drama is based on a real-life story, there are bound to be lessons to be learnt and values to be pondered. It certainly done well in that department which sets it apart from other series of the same tear-jerking genre...
The theme is definitely not new and has been done to death...
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on a very impressive first post. Love the pun about being "...done to death.", or is it? (a pun, I mean)

Is interesting to see these conflicting ideas/comments.
As someone living in the united states as many here (or in any country that's not Japan) to noticed that these dramas have as much or even better moral/message in such a short period of time, all the while entertaining.
However the funny thing is, that from what I have been told (many sources, from people currently living there, or that used to) that these dramas are actually watched mostly by girls, and hardly any guys do watch them (those that do, don't talk about it or deny it).
Now, I wonder if there is a topic regarding this (would actually take the time to read it) is it because they find it girlish?(which is odd since real life would then fit as girlish too) is it they to macho to admit it? (like some guys in the states saying they don't listen to justin timberlake when they do hehe), or just cause they find it dumb and just prefer their sexual mangas and anime?
Just something interesting to find out.
Thanks. _________________

Absolutely. And being able to cry is such a beautiful thing.

Oh yeah I bet it touched a lot of people, including guys.
Is just funny to see that many wont agree to it in person, or overall cast the dramas as something girly. (At least that's what I been told and well would love to confirm if it's true or a lie) _________________

maybe it's just because guys like funny or love drama more than tear-jerker drama like this. i'm a guy n for me i can't say it's just a tear-jerker drama. it's far more than that, precious collection. i found many morale teaching there. _________________

Yeah I agree, I found the drama to be more than a tear jerker, it does have an amazing moral that while it's being delivered in the same medium still gets across in a much better fashion.
And, yeah I concluded love dramas are the dramas I like aswell, sadly the best love dramas (not sure if I seen any) are always TEAR JERKERS hehehe.
I think in this thread or another I posted something about finnaly realizing which is the type of drama I found good (considering I liked, hana yori dango, 1 liter of tears, taiyou no uta, and H2) _________________

So do I. I always say "don't be fooled by prior impression" when I recommend this drama to my friends. Aya san is not just a kawaii character of a typical love story, she is a respectable hero in the real life. Being a guy, I am proud to drop tears for a real hero.

hm....sorry if I have used the wrong word my english is too bad
I think God chose the real Aya to have this disease because he wants Aya to deliver the message. Imagine how many people with similar illness or even normal people like you and me are encouraged by her story. She helps many. Yes the book has arrived and I am going to finish it with my limited Japanese

Personally I'd rather not pin it on the Almighty - Aya was not the only one with the disease, she just happened to be one of those few (may even be the only one) to produce a journal that has enlightened others.
If you are able to read Chinese (seeing as you are from Hong Kong) there is a Chinese translation of Aya's and her mother's diaries available in a number of bookstores.
