Question.
In ep 1 at about 41min 37 second. The girl sings this one song.
I swear I heard it before, but I can't remember the title of it and by who.
Anyone know? _________________

Finished up to Ep 4 today.
So far, I think the drama is good.
Glad to see Koyuki having a bigger role.
As I can see from whats goin on, Toda Erika's character isn't goin to have much screen time, sorta like in Nobuta Wo Produce.
Would like to see more racing, but thats probably not goin to happen till towards the end.
I'm still seeing KimuTaku playing some kinda character thats similar to all his others. Some guy that does thing his own way, prideful, and really doesn't have a flaw in anything......
So far, 9/10.
Story is going good. KimuTaku's character is struggling for once, people hit him for once, call him names for once, it's not boring, the kids are cute, and I love cars and racing too. _________________

They were great, until the other person took over. It was a chinese person translating from Japanese to English and it was HORRIBLE. The WORST subtitles I have EVER seen. I almost couldn't watch it! I got it from tigercinema.com. Anyone else got any from there? All the character's names suddenly became chinese, the name of the orphanage changed twice, and most of the time I had no clue what the heck people were saying. Please tell me that I can buy this dvd somewhere with nice subs and not this sorry, gibberish. If this was a studio release they should be ashamed. |
This drama was produced by Fuji TV and they have a policy of not providing subtitles in any language other than Japanese. You were obviously watching a pirated version. Try downloading from D-Addicts.

So I finished this dorama last night and I absolutely loved it!!!
So much so I watched it straight through (now I am quite tired)
I just loved the whole children's home thing I thought it was really sweet, I especially enjoyed seeing how KimuTaku's character grew after his interaction with the children and vice versa it was really nice.
I put this show off because I thought it would be a bit dull, but in fact I really really enjoyed it.
So far I have gone into all KimuTaku's dramas with low expectations and have ended up really loving them all ^_^
Though Kimu's character was similar to several of his other characters that I have seen (and I'm not knocking that because he plays the role well) it was a change to see him being looked down on as a character. I really felt for him at the start when he was begging to race.
It definitely wasn't boring, I especially liked Ueno's role as the kinda big sister of the house
Also I feel it was nice and tied up, that's three shows in a row I have watched now with perfect endings (this makes me happy ^_^ ) _________________

My Review: 8/10
Although I enjoyed watching Engine, I must admit that it is a forgettable drama. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline in regards to the Orphanage and the staff, but I was confused as to the importance of Race Car Driving. This career of Jirofs (played by Kimura) didnft mesh well with the Orphanage storyline. In fact, the Racing career could have been easily replaced with any other career. The purpose of having a career in the first place was to demonstrate Jirofs personal growth as an individual. It didnft have to be racing. It could have been anything. I didnft find that it was incorporated well at all.
Before watching the drama I read that many people didnft enjoy the Kimura/Koyuki pairing. I had no problem with it. I think Koyuki has a difficult job appealing to the viewers. She doesnft have the typical gkawaiih features and therefore doesnft have the mass appealc but shefs a fabulous actress. She was perfect in the role of Tomomi sensei. Her character type and Kimurafs character type really did go well together, even if they physically werenft a match.
The children at the orphanage were charming and, once again, Ueno Juri demonstrated her wide range of talent. The plot became problematic when it fell into a stringent routine of featuring a child every episode, but I didnft mind it that much.
In the end, Ifm glad I watched this dramac but I probably wonft spend the 11 hours watching it again. _________________

Sensei: Re: the auto racing. I'm an auto racing fan, and with the exception of the movie Grand Prix from the '60s, I've NEVER seen racing accurately portrayed in a movie or t.v. show. They didn't do a bad job in Engine I just don't think auto racing translates well for some reason. However, I think they had to stick Kimura in some sort of sports venue to show him "redeeming" himself. Which he does on 2 levels here, first with his old racing team, and then with his father. If they're going to use a sports venue, the choices are somewhat limited. He's already done hockey in Pride, there have already been enough dramas using baseball, doesn't leave much else, maybe soccer, but having a father mad at his kid for becoming a soccer player is kind of a stretch. They had to have him involved in something his father didn't like to create the conflict there. Plus, all the free advertising Toyota got probably helped with the budget.

I understand WHY it's racing, I suppose. My concern is that it didn't mesh well with his "other side". And I think it doesn't matter whsy sport it was. It was just the writing of the plot itself. There wasn't enough connection. It was like two different stories. _________________

The only connection there is Kimutaku's line where he said " Life is like a Race" no matter what you still have to finish it. I really didn't like the Kimutaku-Koyuki chemistry...or maybe I just don't like Koyuki...she seems too serious even when she's happy.
