Important conversations are usually eavesdropped.

When the lead picks up the phone and started to frown, it usually means something bad happened.

There's no "perfect" lead actor. If he seems perfect, there must be something in his past that he want to hide.

Yup. Unless someone is waiting for me, I don't really go faster. I'll skip breakfast or not. I'm already late so... Traffic is usually lighter too. You can save a few minutes there. Mr Green

Hi I'm going to weigh in here,

About the seeing people you don't expect in strange places that you don't expect cliche. While yes japan is big and crowded and Kind of crazy I was amazed by how many people I met in strange places. I lived in hiroshima and yet ended up meeting people in places like Osaka and Tokyo, I even met a girl from my australian high school in fukuoka... And the amount of times i've seen exes at uncomfortable times is noones business. so while it is a cliche it never seemed that unreasonable to me.

The one that gets me is more of a cinematic cliche. the constant flashbacks. "Yes dear viewer we value your intelligence so highly that we think you need to be reminded of what happened 15minutes ago" I swear to god you could have a drinking game to all the flashbacks in hana yori dango...

If anyone is interested theres a great video about this on you tube. just type "asian dramas" into the search its called something like 50 musts for asian drama. It covers things quite nicely.

HereLs another one that really bugs me:
The PLAYGROUND as an important meeting/thinking place for adults.
It goes ususally like this:
- hero/heroine when feeling sad or lonely is sitting alone (usually on a swing) poundering about lost love, the past or whatever - often observed by love interest from afar
- Fateful encounter of lovers sometimes involving some kind confession (not neccessary love though)

Virgin Road, Nobuta, Love Revolution and others come to my mind

LOL, there's a scene from Nodame where the oboe player does that... There must be some kinda deep psychological inference there: childhood-introspection-swing... Wink

I'm watching a Korean drama, but I've seen this occur in some Japanese dramas as well:

There's always someone who's says "OMG, we have to meet because there is something IMPORTANT that I have to tell you" and the other person somehow doesn't make it because of various reasons: accident, encountering someone else and getting distracted, an enemy (usually a rival love interest) prevents the person from going to the meeting. And of course, the person who got stood up doesn't even listen to what happened, no matter if it's a legitimate excuse, resulting in a MAJOR conflict that affects the whole story and the relationship. 1. Rooftop is the most cozy place on earth. Everybody seems to go there, but there's always seems to be nobody. Well, sometimes there is, but it's just the cool or aloof character in his/her hideaway.
happens at : LIFE, IRYU2, Nobuta, LV, Kurosagi, sappuri, even hitotsu yane no shita2, and many-many more. Happens in quite a different way in HYD, they switch it to emergency stairway hehe

2. Children always running carelessly across the street, and the hero/heroine aways there to rescue the kid and die instead
happens at : attack no.1, platonic sex, mop girl

I love this thread....

How about..

Guy A hates Guy B, both almost want to kill each other off.

Gal A hates Gal B, both almost want to kill each other off.

Guy C and Gal C madly in love with each other, and they will die if they are apart.

And by the end of the show.... Guy A and B find out they are brothers. Gal A and B find out they are sisters. Guy C and Gal C find out they are brother and sister.

Or how about this:

Woman in her 30s, who either never date before for the past 30 over years or is very unlucky in love for the past 30 over years, suddenly has a damn good-looking guy start chasing after her.

And the guy is either a super playboy or younger than the woman.

this cliche has tonnes of examples!

The 2 dramas I just finished recently - Love Revolution and Slow Dance - already have this cliche.

And still have many which I watched in the past...

Posting once in a while, but my two cents.

3) The missed glance. 2 people can't quite express their feelings for each other, but as they part, one turns and looks at the other, then continues on, then the other turns and looks back but only sees the departing figure. C'mon people work on your timing, or learn how to yell or something.

In Bara no Jujika's first chapter it works because it's strangers looking at each other. Mikami must have thought Amami's face was beautiful and Amami must have thought Mikami's face was earnest/serious. They can't yell at one another since they don't know each other at all!

There was also Ai wo Kudasai, but Miho Kanno caught herself just in time before making the wrong choice.

not cliches though... but I realised it is dirt cheap to make phone calls in Japan... cos the people can talk for hours about nonsensical stuff on their cellphone.... and then when it comes to emergency, suddenly nobody remembers that there is something called the CELLPHONE! they actually need to run to the character's house or wherever the person is to tell the person about the emergency...

When someone brings flowers to a patient in the hospital, there is always a vase readily available on the bedside table.

That's standard issue for a patient: bed, chair, nightstand, heart monitor, IV, vase... Beaten

And the television is almost always placed in such a way as to make it impossible for the patient to watch it!!
