Nah, I don't eat that oftne down in Orange County...it's too far. There are many good izakayas here in LA county, from Little Tokyo to the West Side to Torrance....there's tons....I'm not knockin' Zero tho...I'm sure it will do well...there has been a veritable EXPLOSION of izakayas in the last 5 years.

I popped out for an early lunch at Sushi Gen in Little Tokyo.....omg, I haven't been there in years, and this was actually the first time I've eaten sushi in close to a year. Sweat I knew it was going to be crowded so I got there early, before it opens....it opens at 11:15am...I got there at a quarter till 11 and there was already people in line! Shocked

I swear, no kidding, by the time 11:15 am rolled around there were probably 60 to 70 people in line!!!

I sat at the sushi bar and ordered some sashimi...it was so utterly DELICIOUS....I mean it was melt in your mouth fresh. I had some salmon, maguro, hamachi, and spanish mackerel with yuzu kosho...it was really top shelf....I couldn't believe how fresh it was. Since it was my first time eating any animal protein in over a month and my first time eating sushi I splurged...I also ordered some unagi and I had a spicy tuna handroll...they don't mess around there, it is really spicy! Oh dayem and their nori is sooooo dayem good too. I ended the meal by ordering some saba sashimi which they also serve with yuzu kosho.

The funny thing was at the bar there was this old Japanese lady who was sitting next to me...and she heard me speaking Japanese...and then we started talking in Japanese for about 10 minutes. We started talking about me studying Japanese, and Tokyo, where she was from, etc, etc. It was pretty cool Smile

Sushi Gen is awesome.

I will not lie, friend, it wasn't a complex conversation...but it did put a smile on my face that I could even converse with a native Japanese speaker. Wink

Just imaging things...I would love to be able to sit next to you at some sushi bar....we'd chuckle that we could converse in Japanese.
