Speaking of sobfests, I know this is a "drama" recommendation thread, but what about Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu, the movie version? That was a really great one and I heard that it was better then the drama version.
I thought the movie was quite good.
I cant imagine the being enough material to stretch it out into a full drama. _________________

They'll probably go into a lot of detail with their everyday life or with the work/school scenes. Kind of sucky that they made the kid out to be more of a brat, from what I heard. I'm a little reluctant to watch this drama because of all the negative comments, but it's on my queue of dramas to watch soon. _________________

Nobuta wo Produce
not much romance, focus on friendship
I skipped the entire lot of spring dramas currently showing in Japan. No kick......
Yasashii Jikan - makes me want to fly to Hokkaido immediately and drink coffee non-stop when the weather turns cold. The theme music became my cell phone ringtone
Currently watching :
My Blue Sky (Watashi no Aozora) - didn't quite like the main actress but hooked on because of good supporting cast (esp the young son) and good storyline. Story is about a fisherman's daughter who bore a son out of wedlock.
Salaryman Kitaro - office politics
Just finished with:
Hero (Movie)
Big Money ! - love that show. About stock and shares. Very educational.
Any dramas out there that show good fashion sense ???

I'm new and looking for recommendations. At first I looked at the top 50 but from most comment/review, they are all about "...is cute!" ".. is kawaii!" etc. So I'm not convinced. Checked out ratings but then, they can be misleading as well. So I'm hoping for third input i.e. this thread, to combine with the first 2 (and take a ~10mins short peek at Youtube if there's any) and make my mind on which to buy.
Good recommendations are appreciated (preferably drama in the 2000+. It's hard to find older drama here and I don't download).
In case these are of any help, at all:
my 10/10: Karei naru Ichizoku; LIFE; Ichi Ritoru no Namida
my 9.5/10: Long Vacation
my 8/10: Nobuta wo Produce, Nodame Cantabile; Taiyou no Uta (movie)
my 7/10: Hana Kimi; Hana Yori Dango 1 (not interested in HNY2); Engine (I like children ^_^)
my 6/10: Pride; Good Luck; Beautiful Life; Love Generation; Gokusen 1 (not interested in G2); My Boss, My Hero; Taiyou no Uta (drama);
my 5/10: Hero; Mukodono
In consideration:
After reading a few of the last pages in this thread and cross referencing with reviews, I got these on my radar but final decision pending:
1 Pound no Fukuin (too new and I doubt the DVD is out yet); Utahime; Hotaru no Hikari; 14 Sai no Haha; Yasashii Jikan (worry about the slow pace); Boku to Kanojo to Kanojo no Ikiru Michi; Orange Days; Last Christmas; Kimi ga oshietekureta koto.
Overtime interests me a bit but I'm skeptical since it looks like a Long Vacation rip-off. And truth be told, it's not the story of Long Vacation that that push it up from 8/10 to 9.5 in my list. It's the character "Minami" -- an almost perfect albeit fairy-tale-ish 4-in-1 (best friend; litle sister, big sister, GF).
Aoi tori and Hitotsu Yane no Shita 1 interest me the most but alas, it's gonna be hard finding them.
Preferences:
wide range of genre from heavy to dark to tearjerker to inspiring to light to comedy and wacky. The catch is, it should be true to the form. If it's heavy it should be heavy. Tearjerker should be a true tearjerker (read: Ichi Ritoru). Wacky should be wacky (read: Nodame) and so forth. The truer it is to the form, the better I'll like it.
I prefer strange female characters most. Nodame and Nobuta are two perfect examples. That probably explains my interest in Tomosaka Rie and Shibasaki Kou characters in Kimi ga oshietekureta koto and Orange Days respectively.
Not interested in GTO since I've read the manga. No favourite actress and actor yet (even though there are many Kimura's drama in my list above).
For tearjerker recommendation, I should inform that the only jdrama that made me shed a tear is Ichi Ritoru.

My recommendation would be to check out the first ep of dramas on crunchyroll (www.crunchyroll.com under dramas) or veoh - if available that is. The quality is bad but it gives you an idea.
Then you could check out reviews of specific people here. Wynter for instance could be a good reference. She reviews every drama she watched and gives objective arguments.
Concerning your pendings: 1 Pound no Fukuin is a big NO as for the kawai lovers - it stars JE idol Kame; Utahime was good 7 or 8; Hotaru no Hikari was ok with a whacky female; 14 Sai no Haha - just baaad reviews; Yasashii Jikan is slow but nice,; Boku to Kanojo to Kanojo no Ikiru Michi donLt know; Orange Days just grand 9 out of 10; Last Christmas good; Kimi ga oshietekureta koto doLt know.

Hmm.. then I think I'll scratch 1 pound of Gospel off my list.
Thanks for the crunchy suggestion. Didn't knew the site exists. Nice one. Less hassle in searching and faster. Watched the 1st episode of 14sai no Haha. Near the end of the episode, it started to get interesting. If the rest of the story is as that , then it'll be a good purchase. if it is as the first half of the 1st episode, maybe not.
Couldn't find Hitotsu Yane no Shita and Kimi ga Oshietekureta Koto there. I did noticed they have Hotaru no Hikari and Last Christmas but got diverted to watching 3 episodes of Jigoku Shojo instead (I just couldn't stop).
Didn't know that there are live action of the anime. Suprised that it's not mentioned but then again, perhaps my taste is kinda wierd (liking LIFE far more than other popular choices?). The actings are kinda stiff but sweet revenge is always... sweet. So, I'll probably buy that.
Any other recommendation?
And oh, despite the username, I'm a guy (I just happen to like some of Amano Tsukiko's songs). Just in case gender matters in recommendation.

Kimi ga Oshiete kureta koto is my favorite drama of all time. Great story, excellent acting by Tomosaka Rie, and I highly recommend it. _________________
