Well, that pic and similar have been circulating for weeks now... I was just trying to keep people from propagating it... Sweat

Definitely the sign of true devotee... or crazy person ;-) I'll just wait until I can get the whole deal. I do hope we get subs on those HD versions - I always get HD versions nowadays when they are available - there's just no going back!

Looks like an off-topic discussion in there huh? Since we're on the (off)topic, allow me to post this here.

Well, Hi Juri fanboys, oh, and girls! Been watching this thread whenever I get the chance and I simply don't get it why some are still overly particular and concerned about these so-called fangirls' reactions. Shake Head If you don't like them, why waste your, ehem, "precious" time typing in even a few words about them? Do you feel an utter sense of superiority doing this? How pathetic.

And of course, It is common knowledge that Juri-chan is starring in a new drama now. Much to the dismay and disgust of these people, a JE boy was included in the cast. But funny, these i-hate-fangirls-and-the-people-they-fangirl people disgust me more. Stereotyping seemingly has always been one of their their favorite pastimes. So what if there's a JE boy in the drama? What is so wrong with that? These JE boys you so obviously hate and make fun of in some of your posts are earning hard-earned money. They are just actors you know (yeah right, I am already anticipating "If you can call that acting" comments..blah, blah). But that is how the entertainment industry here in Japan works so bear with it! If you don't wish to see this Ryo guy in Last Friends, you can always fast forward. Or better yet, close your eyes on every scene he's in. Plus, If you don't wish to hear the so-called fangirls screaming, then cover your ears. Better yet, do not listen. As simple as that. No need for I-am-superior wise-guy remarks.

I was deciding against myself posting this but I simply can't bear with this we-are-superior-than-fangirls-posts crap anymore. And take note, these posts are everywhere in the forum. Hello, this is like the Ueno Juri thread and I'm still seeing these crap.

Goodness, I am back in Japan for a double purpose homecoming and business trip yet I am typing in this. Well, this is my choice. I think it's about time I post again. Afterall, this is just my second post compared to the thousands of posts some of you have.

Anyway, on a lighter note, Juri-chan and the rest of the LF cast and crew did a great job for the opener. Juri is simply admirable for taking on the Ruka role. Well, let's all watch out for the succeeding episodes and hope it turns out well.

See.. I knew you'd see the light..

Soon comes the big question: Is Juri actually portraying her 'true' self in Last Friends and we were deluded in earlier endeavors as to her orientation?

I have to say.. that would be a really interesting development. I haven't read anything about her real life love life anywhere, even though I read several fanboyish desires for her to get with Tamaki Hiroshi.

The plot thickens...

A few well-thought-out posts are far more valuable than endless mindless ones. I always feel a little guilty when I don't have anything substantive to contribute. Some of us just like talking to be involved and not because we have something new and exciting to inform the group.

Truthfully and honestly, I've always wondered about that, but kept it to myself 'til now, since I always thought it was just me who felt that way...

It's sorta deja vu-ish, 'cause there was a girl in my past who I was totally nuts about, but I always noticed some things that made me wonder about her.... Sweat

History repeats itself.

A while back, she was romantically linked with some comedian guy, but that story died on the vine rather quickly.

EDIT: you gotta think that we're not the only ones wondering... I wonder how the Japanese media are gonna spin this...

All the more reason to give Juri-chan some major props for taking such a big risk so early in her career. Victory! Peace!

Yeah, it really would bring up some healthy debate. Obviously it is silly to make conclusions about someone's sexuality based on such limited anecdotal evidence.

I mean, I'm personally a straight guy (who is specifically comfortable with homosexual people) and people still sometimes wonder if I'm gay because I like to dress nice, am pretty handsome and fit and don't have a girlfriend all the time. Sometimes we can delude ourselves by looking at a small part of the picture.

As she basically developed without a mother and in the company of two older sisters, it's not surprising that she might fall into the late bloomer category. While the entertainment industry has its pressures, she seems to try to keep as normal a life as she can (based on those videos you sent me).

What's even more surprising to me was the relative absence of same-sex female relationships in Japanese drama (at least according to one other poster: I haven't seen enough to really substantiate a position). Even if Juri's character Ruka is a flaming lesbian, she's depicted in an incredibly stereotypical fashion (reminescent of American lesbians of yore) indicating a kind of innocense with which the diversity is being treated.

I can think of a couple of examples off the top of my head of same-sex relationships or at least desires. Masumi in Nodame is a very femine male and either adores (asexually) Chiaki or is a homosexual. It isn't really deeply discussed in the story, but the circumstances lead the audience to believe that he's probably batting for the other team.

Kaorin in Azumanga Daioh is clearly infatuated with Sakaki. They even insinuate homosexuality (suggestive rainbow flags, Sakaki taking on a traditional male role in her fantasies). Even still, it is possible to see her admoration in an asexual light (also admittedly difficult).

The last thing I remember is the talk show host depicted in Lost in Translation. He's extremely effeminate and girly.. but that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with his orientation.
I understand the okame is a generally accepted role for a male in historical Japanese society but I know very little about its present stigma. I think that it's generally safe to say that American media culture has embraced homosexuality in a more mature, different and more pervasive way than has been portrayed in the limited amount of Japanese culture I have consumed.

I'm not making any conclusions here, but I do think it's an interesting topic that this Last Friends may demand discussion of.

True.

That's a very good observation... Not unexpected from an attorney. Thumbsup

Interesting that you pointed out Masumi: my one and only nitpick with Nodame is the exceedingly stereotypical portrayal of homosexuals as being oddly dressed and more infatuated than heterosexuals...

Of course, I was the only one rather off-put by this and someone actually had the nerve to call me homophobic, even though I was claiming the drama misrepresents homosexuals... Shake Head Though, truth to tell, other dramas have done the same.

This is exactly my point. Well actually, it is okay to have some off-topic discussions once in a while. I just hate it when these off-topics are about dissing this and that artist or this and that fan or something. I mean, of course we all do have the freedom to express ourselves be it positive or negative comments. But then, maybe it is about time that we all become extra considerate. Because no matter how good or bad the acting of these celebrities appear to us when we finally watch their dramas and all, their efforts in filming and all that doesn't change. I know as I have seen quite a number of filmings already as I used to work for productions here in Japan.

As for the comments to the other fans, wanting not to read posts dissing one another will be synonymous to wanting to attain world peace this very instant. So I guess the best way is to just respect and co-exist. I myself have witnessed how fans can get so intense when they see their favorite celebrity. How they react is their problem. But of course, expressing reactions differ from person to person so we just have to respect them and live with it.

Anyway, I can see that sexuality is being discussed here now, pretty much triggered by Last Friends. As for Juri-chan, there are times when she projects the image of the characters she plays during interviews and all that. But I have seen her in person twice or thrice a few years back (before I changed jobs and moved oveseas) and all those times, I felt that she's got this unique aura of having a reserved but seemingly cheerful persona.

Personally, I think that people all have a sense of masculinity or femininity in them. Because in reality, there are only few major differences between these two sexes. Most of the time, some attributes given mainly result from how the society perceive them over the years. Our ideas of the male and female attributes were molded by the society itself.
