erm rmvb has excellent compression. ive seen 300mb files tat contain a 2hr movie. realmedia files is a real asian ting not really the westerners. taiwanese n china rippers luve rm.
but theres 1 major flaw imo, if there is any little error the rest of the entire show is screwed. u get distorted images, unsynced sound. artifacts all over the dam shop. much less likely to happen in avi files using divx or xvid encoding. this is my experience with RM files Smile

I was experimenting with the real easy convertor to convert fr mpeg to rm, but always errors here and there. And the DVD2Mpeg does work to convert mpeg to avi (divx encoding). Can share what softwares you used for maximum compression? thanks.

I'm in an english ap class at my school so i get a variety of material to read... currently i'm reading grapes of wrath (john stienbeck), and the great gatsby (fitzgerald). we also read a lot of henry david thoreau and ralph waldo emerson (both highly revered writers). a little poetry here and there... I also read a lot from the bible, although i am a buddhist, i can still enjoy the holy bible as literature. hm... what else... oh, i like to read about art history as well; i find that subject very interesting... currently studying early modern art, those surrealists... pretty weird stuff!

going to start reading asian lit soon... i've recieved some good recomendations of japanese authors from another forum. Anyone read "tale of the genji?" I couldn't get past the first page!

A lot of the classic Japanese novels are a little too painful for modern appreciation and not to mention very provincial-minded. They even have one in which they fabricated this whole dynasty in China controlled by a Japanese emperor!! What the hell? And the best part, my Japanese Literture professor (who is a broken American machine) actually believed it is true!!! His excuse was "I taught this for 30 years, I should know." Yeah, 30 yrs too much I say.

HOWEVER, I do recommend a classic-modern novel by Natsume Sooseki called "Sorekara" (And Then). You can probably find it on Amazon. Other than that, Americans have pretty bad choices when it comes to importing foreign books.

I also recommend reading The Stranger by Albert Camus and Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Almost forgot to say Asian Literature is best read in their original language or translation in each other's language. The transition to English or any western language usually lose a lot of meanings. Chinese to Japanes and Japanese to Chinese translations are the most faithful.

I agree. But, when it comes to an expression of the English language, Brit' and U.S. works rule anyway. I try to stay away from translations whenever possible; I'm pro-Western canon all the way; bah, multi-culturalism (oh, wait; I take that back, as Shakespeare's the true multi-culturalist).

The Man's recommendations (for now):
Ulysses by James Joyce
The works of Nathaniel West (you WILL believe a limited catalogue can be relevant and can endure)
The Writings of Jonathan Swift
The works of Willa Cather
The works of Chaucer
The Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory and Literature
The Norton Anthology of Literary Criticism

And I might need a full day to list the remainder of texts concerning: 1) literary studies; 2) criticisms; 3) theory that I own. They're great stuff.

I've carried a Cross Townsend basalt black ballpoint pen for years and it's my accessory as much as one sports a Rolex. TMI?

haha, jonathan swift! i remember reading an essay called "modest proposal" by him... it was his solution to solving the problem of overpopulation of children (or something like that). He suggested cannibalism. Pretty funny how he presented this absurd idea in a formal and serious tone.
