Well it has dropped to 10.8%. Like I've said before, Olympics rule. Mr Green

Yeah, it's a big big deal since Kitajima Kosuke's 2 gold medals and 1 world record. They were hoping to get the gold this time with a repeat performance when they won the World Baseball last year.

As a reminder to all...

TV ratings only measure LIVE television viewing. Recordings and downloading are not included in the ratings. Many Japanese have DVRs and such, and choose to watch live events like the Olympics, and record pre-recorded content such as TV dramas. AND, keep in mind that the Olympics didn't just pop out of the air; the Japanese TV networks knew YEARS in advance that they would experience drops in ratings during this period, hence the quality of the Summer 2008 season. It would be stupid for them to release their A- or B-shows right now.

The talent agency system in the Japanese geinokai does not work in the way you would think. In short, most actors do not pick and choose projects; they're assigned projects. Talent agencies are like temporary employment agencies: the talent agency finds work for their clients, where deals are made between the agency and the executives of a drama project. Especially with Johnny's Jimusho, every assignment has some sort of strategy behind it for the long term of the agency and its client.

For example, let's say Kimura Takuya wants to experiment with his acting abilities by taking a part in a drama project that is uncharacteristic of him. His talent agency will not allow him to do something like that. The agency basically owns Kimura and his image, and anything that would change the image - good or bad - is avoided.

Regarding Code Blue, medical dramas have always been popular with the Japanese. Also, lead parts in medical dramas is one of the top types of parts that display an actor's abilities. Others are attorneys, professionals such as CEOs and other company positions, politicians, teachers, sports figures, detectives, etc. I'm taking a wild guess here in that maybe his agency wanted Yamashita-san to play a physician. Those types of parts do not pop up that often, so an opportunity at any given time must be accepted.

hi! I have some questions about jdorama tv ratings, hopefully someone could share some info:
what's the range to be considered as a good rating?
why all the ratings are based on the kanto region?
is it true that when a special drama (1 ep) shows good ratings it gets a drama serial (weekly episodes)? how good has the ratings got to be in order to happen? I read this is like a tipical thing to do....is it true?

thanks in advance

Generally 15% or higher average rating (total of all episodes) is considered to be good, 12%~15% is acceptable for most timeslots, lower than 12% is flop.

For FujiTV Monday@9 timeslot, the standard is around 5% higher, 20%+ good, 17~20% normal, lower than 17% = flop.

For TVAsahi, the stardard is around 5% lower in recent years, 10%+ good, 9% normal, lower than 9% = flop.

Most important thing is the trend though, the dorama with low drop in rating after first and second episode, rising ratings in the second half, last episode rating > first episode ratings are all good signs.

Quote:

It's the largest region of all in terms of population, and it's the most important business region. Their tastes are considered to be standard for Japan as well.
Other region's ratings are available too, but these are harder to find for free.

I have never heard of it. Even if there were such cases before, it's EXTREMELY rare.
Usually it's the opposite. Successful dorama series get SP episodes. This is usually on series with rising ratings on each episode and averaging above 17%, 18% OR constant 20%+.

Some movies that recorded great box office numbers have been made into dorama (and vice versa), but most of movies-made-into-dorama are planned from the start, like the TBS Junai trilogy "Sekai no Chuushin", "Ima Ai", "Taiyou no Uta". Also "1L no Namida" "Water Boys" etc, they call this marketing technique "media mix".
