1st Tokyo Drama Awards: Pandora, Points and Lines

As part of the currently running Japan International Contents Festival (CoFesta), organizers are holding the 2nd International Drama Festival on October 22-24. This year, the event is introducing the first Tokyo Drama Awards, and the winners were announced during a press conference held on Thursday.

The grand prize was awarded to two dramas, "Pandora" and "Ten to Sen" ("Points and Lines"). "Pandora" aired on WOWOW this spring, starring Hiroshi Mikami as a doctor embroiled in a political war after he discovers a cure for cancer. The two-episode drama "Ten to Sen," which aired on TV Asahi last November, was based on a Seicho Matsumoto mystery novel and starred Beat Takeshi.

In the kids and youth category, the award went to TV Tokyo's "Keitai Sousakan 7" and Fuji TV's "Last Friends." NTV's "Saito-san" won in the family category.

The other winners were "Atsuhime" (jidaigeki category) and "SP" ("non-genre" category). Special awards were given to the art staff of "Ten to Sen" and to actor Tetsuya Takeda and the staff of "3 Nen B Gumi Kinpachi Sensei."

The award presentation ceremony will be held on the 22nd.

TOKYO �\ The Intl. Drama Festival, which runs Wednesday to Friday in association with the Tokyo Film Festival, has announced the winners of its first competition for TV shows.

Scooping the Grand Prix for a continuing series is �gPandora,�h a medical research drama on the Wowow entertainment channel that also netted the script nod for Yumiko Inoue.

The award for stand-alone drama went to �gTen to Sen�h (Points and Lines), a two-part program on TV Asahi based on a mystery novel by Seicho Matsumoto. Its helmer, Kan Ishibashi, shared director honors with �gPandora�fs�h Shunsaku Kawake.

The drama prize in the kids & young section went to TV Tokyo�fs �gKeitai Sosakan 7�h (Cell Phone Agent 7) and Fuji TV�fs �gLast Friends.�h

NTV�fs �gSaito-san�h topped the family section, and NHK�fs �gAtsu Hime�h (Princess Atsu) the period drama section. Finally, Fuji TV�fs �gSP�h was judged best of the dramas not falling into a specific genre.

Among individual winners, Koichi Sato and Juri Ueno (for Nodame Cantabile SP) received the prizes for actor and actress, respectively. Masato Sakai and Emi Wakui scooped supporting actor and actress nods, respectively.

The Intl. Drama Festival is presenting Japanese dramas to foreign buyers at the Tokyo fest in an effort to boost the anemic $100 million in annual overseas sales for local dramas.

The total production cost of local dramas broadcast on terrestrial channels, including the five major nets and pubcaster NHK, is estimated at $22 billion.

The Tokyo Film Festival ends on Sunday.

Haven't seen Rookies yet, so I really can't comment on it, but congrats to Ryuta Sato, I've liked him ever since first seeing him in Pride.

But I HAVE seen Seigi no Mikata and Mirai Shida is great in this, well deserved award for her. I kind of question Yamada Yu getting one though, , ,

Well done Mirai Shida
Yamada Yu's character was refreshing as for once a female character wasn't pure or fragile but downright b*tchy. I tend to forget how discriminating Japanese dramas can be in their presentation of women (attributes such as weak, sick, good, virginal, pure, stupid, incapable etc come to my mind). But in Yamada's case I question as well if pouting and eye-rolling counts as acting and if that's sufficient for an award.

I'm just glad Gonzo got some sort of recognition.

That's been a semi-ongoing discussion why the studios/stations don't subs these things, considering it's obvious world-wide appeal.

We need some entrepreneur to wake these people up in Japan and show them what kind of money they're losing out on.
