they did a special on NTV on her the week i was left okinawa. Very emotinal piece with her and her daughter traveling back & forth from tokyo <=> moscow. even though i didn't know who she was at the beginning of the piece, at the end you felt nothing but sympathy.

I didn't realize that she sang a jpop song from way back in the day that i used to dig, Zoo.

'80s teen flick director John Hughes dies in NYC

NEW YORK – A spokeswoman for John Hughes says the director of 1980s coming-of-age films like "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" has died in Manhattan.

Michelle Bega says the 59-year-old Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk. He was in Manhattan to visit family.

He made a teen star of Molly Ringwald with 1984's "Sixteen Candles" about a girl's nightmarish birthday on the eve of her sister's wedding.

Ringwald also starred in "The Breakfast Club," about a group of high school misfits during Saturday detention, and "Pretty in Pink."

Hughes also directed "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and wrote "Home Alone." He lived in Illinois and set many of his films in the Chicago area.

Guitar legend-inventor Les Paul dies at age 94

AP, Aug 13, 2009 2:47 pm PDT

Les Paul, who invented the solid-body electric guitar later wielded by a legion of rock 'n' roll greats, died Thursday of complications from pneumonia. He was 94.

According to Gibson Guitar, Paul died at White Plains Hospital. His family and friends were by his side.

As an inventor, Paul also helped bring about the rise of rock 'n' roll with multitrack recording, which enables artists to record different instruments at different times, sing harmony with themselves, and then carefully balance the tracks in the finished recording.

The use of electric guitar gained popularity in the mid-to-late 1940s, and then exploded with the advent of rock in the mid-'50s.

"Suddenly, it was recognized that power was a very important part of music," Paul once said. "To have the dynamics, to have the way of expressing yourself beyond the normal limits of an unamplified instrument, was incredible. Today a guy wouldn't think of singing a song on a stage without a microphone and a sound system."

"Without Les Paul, we would not have rock and roll as we know it," said Terry Stewart, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. "His inventions created the infrastructure for the music and his playing style will ripple through generations. He was truly an architect of rock and roll."

May he Rest in Peace.

He lived 20 months after his pancreatic cancer diagnosis and lived his life to the fullest in that time period. He kept acting and wrote his autobiography. He was strength and grace until the end.

My favorite movie of his is still To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything. He played a drag queen with such dignity and style! Applaud

Yes, indeed.

Cancer is so ruthless.

His talent will be remembered.

My sister just called me and she reminded me of two things I had forgotten about Patrick Swayze.

1 when I was 10 or 11 I had a poster with Patrick Swayze on a horse (it was from a TV series - North and South I believe) and I used to kiss the poster every morning before leaving for school. Admittingly it was (Eve youLre going to like this) the horse I kissed but still ...

2 He was in one of our favourite movies of all times - a movie very few people have seen: Donnie Darko. My sister used to say: if I were to make a movie I would want to have Patrick Swayze as the anti idol.

RIP
