Oooh, Nam Sang-mi is one of my fave K-actresses--uber-talented, love her face and how she isn't anorexic-looking like many of her colleagues. Glad to know you're a fan, Geezer. SWEET SPY had the most cockamamie spy plot, though. In my 6.5 years of heavy K-Ent immersion, I have yet to watch a spy drama that didn't make me laugh out loud at intervals. Even DOG AND WOLF had its share of moments that made me go, mehhh... (And that doe-eyed Kor-Am model/actor from SWEET SPY, Dennis O'Neil, prolly felt that the drama was one big... photo shoot, haha. Stupid man, go back to America and get a real job. Sorry, but the best Kor-Am actor--well, there's just two of them, lol--is Daniel Henney, bar none.)
CAPITAL SCANDAL -- Now THAT'S one drama that chucked all pretense to plausibility out the window, but it didn't take itself too seriously, so it was fine with me. Are you a member over at Soompi? I wrote a review (link found on the first page of the drama's thread) entitled "Capital Scandal: Not Much Brain, But Plenty of S(e)oul," hahaha. But I LOVED that drama, it was pure enjoyment. (Wannie! Jo Ma Ja! lol)
As someone who detests () "sappy love stories, or sad, tear jerking melodramas," you may actually like RESURRECTION, considered the cult fave of 2005. You might find it... sprawling at 24 episodes, but it's a pulse-pounding, character-driven whodunit. I beseech you to give the first few episodes a try...

And maybe you'll like the 2005 epic drama FASHION '70s, which follows the lives of four people from the turbulence of the Korean War all the way to their adulthood in the 1970s. Pretty staggering at 28 episodes, but if you stick with it to the end, it could prove worthwhile.
You mentioned you're not a martial arts fan, but you may like DAMO, a 2003 saguek (Korean counterpart of jidaigeki/wuxia). This whodunit-cum-love story clocks in at just 14 episodes, but the production values are astounding (cinematic, even), and the title character (she's a damo, literally a serving girl, although they were often used as low-ranked detectives in the Joseon dynasty) is NOT your typical simpering, dimwitted, ditzy K-drama rom-com heroine. She TOTALLY kicks butt!!!!!!!! The plot is tight and riveting, although I can't promise you it doesn't have its share of weepy moments. Still, the sadness is really part of the experience, and never feels gratuitous or contrived.

Yeah, those complaints seem to be valid. But the thing is... when it's on tape or disc, it's pretty easy to just hit the fast forward button. Each episode is an hour long, if not and hour and five minutes long. So if you FF through the songs, and the "fart" acting, it comes out to about the same length as a Japanese show.
Yeah, I think that's why I eventually tired of K-dramas. ( @ "Fart-acting!!!") My best friend (J-D member/lurker, Soompi staffer, bona fide K-Ent pundit, and fellow J-drama newbie) hates it when I resort to Old Faithful (aka the FFWD butt'n) and thinks I'm being lazy and undisciplined (), but I do it anywayyyyy.... I'm like, why sit through all that tedium if I'll just end up hating the drama, anyway?
BTW, you mentioned having ALL IN. Funny, because it's Song Hye-gyo (undoubtedly the loveliest K-actress ever born, never mind her acting skills, lol) in her best work, methinks. (Though I haven't seen WORLDS WITHIN, yet.)

Woo-hoo! Sung Yu-ri fanboy in da hauz! I only saw her in the fusion sageuk HONG GIL DONG (he's sort of the Robin Hood of Korean folklore), but man that show was a riot. (It also stars my fave K-actor Kang Ji-hwan. ) SYR was extremely cute in it, although the scenery is far from any tropical paradise. The setting is a mountain forest thingy, in the dead of winter, so everyone is neatly bundled up--alas, even SYR.
But I second nadrika and Wynter, FANTASY COUPLE / COUPLE OR TROUBLE and KIM SAM SOON are terrific rom-com choices. FANTASY COUPLE is actually a remake of that Goldie Hawn-Kurt Russell comedy, OVERBOARD (remember it? ). Lots of fun to watch. And the heroine is really pretty.
Hehe, no pressure from my end, but to add to your Christmas K-drama List, other rom-coms of note would be MY GIRL (2006) and DALJA'S SPRING (2007), where both heroines are disarmingly cute. DALJA'S SPRING would be the closest thing to an OL drama this side of the Sea of Japan. COFFEE PRINCE (2007) has an interesting gender-bending premise, but it's sweet and funny, plus the lead actress is nothing short of gorgeous, despite the deglamorized, tomboyish look.

i have seen alot of korean dramas and my these are my list:
1. full house-romantic-comedy. i'm a huge song hye kyo fan and i really love her in this drama she was super cute acting like a naive girl. i even memorized the 3 bears song! it's the first time i see rain in a drama.
2. kim sam soon: they said that it was the korean version of bridget jones' diary. very funny. the lead actress kim sun ah have to gain a lot of weight for her role
3. my girl: i love the funny scenes here. lee da hae is funny and cute plus i was drooling over the cuteness of lee dong wook!
4. coffee prince: i love yoon eun hye in goong/princess hours but i fell in love with her in this drama evenmore. her acting skills had improved and she really looks like a guy here.
5. only you: starring han chae young and jo hyun jae. i like the storyline and it really made me cry during the sad parts/scenes.
6. season dramas (endlesslove)- i love all them all, from autumn fairytale, winter sonata, summer scent, and spring waltz. for me winter sonata and summer scent tops my list!
7. bad family: funny! kyung sang min is indeed a great actor! i always laugh whenever he threatens his "family members"! he acts like a real gangster!
8. memories of bali: very controversial ending they say! this is drama where i fell inlove with the charms of my ultimate korean crush jo in sung! you got two eye-candies here, one is jo in sung and the other is so ji sub.
9. save the last dance for me- my favorite eugene kim is the lead actress. the story is very touching.

Nice to know you're a fan of both Yamaguchi Tomoko and Nam Sang Mi.
I've been a charter member of the Has there ever been anyone half as talented as Tomoko Yamaguchi in the history of television? No. gumi since 1996. And I think Nam Sang Mi is The Peach.
They both made the greatest first impressions on me. Tomoko running down the street in her bridal rig in the first episode of "Long Vacation". And Sang Mi putting on her helmet and going billy goat on the Japanese mafia guy at the beginning of "Sweet Spy". It was love at first sight. Twice.
By the way... do watch Tomoko in "Sweet Home", or "Double Kitchen" if you get the chance. They're both outstanding.
shin 2 claims that "King's Restaurant" is her best, but I tend to disagree. It's a terrific show, but Tomoko has more of a supporting role in it. She doesn't get to drive that bus.
By the way, you're absolutely right about Denis O'Neil in "Sweet Spy". One of the worst actors I've ever seen. And I've taught drama in High School. But the rest of the supporting cast was wonderful. Yu Sun as the sexy detective, the three comic relief aging gangsters at the boxing gym. The old, acrobatic valet/spy master. It was all great fun.
Just a shame they couldn't think of an ending.
You rate "All In" that highly? Cool, recommendations from both you and Eve. I look forward to seeing it. I've seen Song Hye-gyo in both "Full House" and "Worlds Within" and I quite liked her. She's not Sang Mi, but she sure did carry the two shows I saw her in.

Lot of recommendations here sound great, lucky I took a look in here. I think I may try Fantasy Couple and Resurrection, or at least download them so my Mum can watch. Sounds like something she may enjoy.
I did enjoy Korean dramas before I got into Japanese dramas. Full House and Wonderful Life were the main ones, and Jewel in the Palace too of course. My main gripes were that I had to endure/suffer for a long time before getting the few minutes that I really enjoyed, and quite often, they have this very crude way of establishing characters by putting down other characters, or everyone kept saying how great that person is. I tried 3 episodes of Damo and that was the main reason I stopped. It was probably 4 years ago though, so things may be different now.
For Korean dramas, I also found that most of the time I was watching the series for the actresses, rather than the story, writing, or production. I can't do that anymore, not for a whole series.

@ Ender's Girl- Glad to find someone else who enjoyed ALL IN. Honestly I dont even remember the main actress, LOL. But it has been years since I saw it. It was one of my first Kdramas.
I have found similarities in many of the kdrama series but picking through them carefully(meaning dropping the series the moment I get bored) I have found they have a nice knack for tearjerkers, LIke Crazy For You.
And SOul Mate was fun and offbeat.
Recently I dropped To Marry A Millionaire. Maybe ot was the bad subs, but I doubt it. I couldnt do Fantasy Couple either. But then I thought it was very hard to compete with the original version with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. _________________

I was very interested in watching this because of the genre. But never got round to searching for it. Not a 'popular' drama it seems...

Agrees completely. I think, this was the only long drama that I actually managed to endure from start to finish cos it was shown on TV and it really was a nice show. Enjoyed it VERY MUCH!!!

Interestingly enough, Nam Sang-mi didn't even get "discovered" the conventional way. Someone just posted her photo on this Ulzzang website, the K-netizens voted (and you know how wired Koreans are), and--boom! Some talent agency scooped her up. (Lol, wasn't BAD FAMILY just a scream? )

Noted. Thanks for the recs. Um, these are dramas she did before getting hitched? Wasn't LV her last one before the Big Kekkon-o? Funny, but my friend and I keep referring to her actor-husband as "Mr. Tomoko" (the way we call Matsushima Nanako's hubby "Mr. Nanako," mainly because we haven't seen any of their work and don't have their names down pat. )

Kewl, you taught drama, huh?
Dennis O'Neil going "Koala... Koh-waall-luhhhh..." every bleeping second made me laugh like a banshee... every bleeping second, lol. And to add insult to injury (oh, those poor dying little neurons), they just HAD to make his character a freakin' SPY, no matter that he couldn't even speak a word of Hangul--or any language other than English. But I agree, the supporting cast rocked, especially the somersault-happy Hedgehog dude (I've seen this actor in countless K-dramas, and I love him to bits).
SWEET SPY ended the way it did because it was meant to have a sequel. Dunno why plans fell through, but thank heavens they did, lol.
If you didn't mind the illogicality in SWEET SPY, you may want to check out GREEN ROSE. Think: "The Count of Monte Cristo," K-drama-style: pretty much the same premise (and the drama did start out well), but riddled with implausibilites. And the lead actor--ain't much of an actor (same dude in MARRYING A MILLIONAIRE, Eve). Jim Caviezel and Richard Chamberlain he ain't, not by a mile. Now, why am I even recommending this, lollll
You mentioned liking KSA. The actor in KSA (Eric Mun) also starred in SUPER ROOKIE, about this deadbeat who (by a computer glitch) gets hired by an elite corporation--with all the ensuing complications of this slap-happy comedy of errors. Lots of fun. The FANTASY COUPLE guy (Oh Ji-ho) plays the antagonist, so yay--more familiar faces, lol. And you love EVASIVE INQUIRY AGENCY / MIXED-UP INVESTIGATIVE AGENCY--kewl! Heard nothing but praise about this drama, and it was on my to-watch list before I got blitzed by Jdorama, lol.

Lol, take your sweet time getting to know your K-dramas, absolutely no pressure from my end.
Errrr... not saying I'm rating ALL INhighly, just that if you HAD to choose from Song Hye-gyo's body of work... that drama MAY have been her least annoying turn (sorry, Eve). Or not, hyukyukyuk. Come to think of it, she didn't have to do much except look... wan and pretty. (And besides, I remember ALL IN more for Lee Byung-hun's (A-list actor, Storm Shadow in G.I. JOE) performance.) At least in FULL HOUSE, SHG's character had more spirit. Well, I'm obviously not a fan of the actress, so better not take my word for it.

Yep, your mum might love FANTASY COUPLE if she's into lighter fare. There's romance in RESURRECTION, although frankly I felt it was the weakest link--kind of this annoying little encumbrance, not really essential to the rest of the drama, which was AWESOME.
(Nadrika: Yeah, the ratings were pretty dismal, BUT this is one of those dramas that enjoy a deeply loyal, fiercely devoted fan base (like, me!!! like me!!!) 4, 5 years after airing. Plus, the critics loved it, so... )
Mebbe you'll find DAMO easier to stomach after all this time...? (I mean, 3 episodes--that's more than a fifth of the way through, lol.) Your mum may even like it, because the female character is written so damn well. My own mother, who has zero tolerance for K-dramas (rom-coms for the ditziness, and melos for the... weepiness, lol), found DAMO riveting, and lamented why more K-heroines couldn't be like Chae-ok, or more K-heroes like Commander Yoon, lol.
I have JEWEL IN THE PALACE (all 4,349 episodes lol), but never gave it a try. Dunno, the premise (cooking! and healing people! lol) just didn't appeal to me, I guess. But everyone I know who's seen it finds it wonderful, so I'm sure this drama was worth the monster hype.

ZOMG how could I have forgotten to mention SOULMATE???? One of my all-time favorite K-rom-coms, and to think actor-centric li'l me didn't know any of the ensemble cast. Love the way the drama was structured, love the different POVs, the relationship intricacies, the humor and the sweetness, the crackling wit, the OST!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure when Yamaguchi got married. I keep myself sane by reading as little as possible about the stars I admire or fall in love with.
Yup. "Long Vacation" was her last series.

He made a stir about 10 years ago when he wrote what was supposed to have been a very funny book about "Living With A National Treasure". The title was something like; "Mr. Yamaguchi Tomoko".
After staring in a dozen successful series of his own, and appearing in a string of very successful movies (He was one of the stars of "Rajio no Jikan" aka "Welcome Back Mr. McDonald" - one of my all time favorites) he was still known everywhere he went as Mr. Yamaguchi Tomoko.

With Wyn chan watching Prince's First Love, I had to watch portions of it again... actually ended up watching every bit of it. That put me in a hopeless Sung Yu Ri mood.... forced me to get Snow Queen.
I'm starting to realize that Sung Yu Ri is so perfect in Prince's First Love that she does not fit well in a serious drama such as Snow Queen. But in her honor I will watch every bit of it.... Also got hold of One Fine Day which should finish my current Sung Yu Ri engorgement. Especially since she is reportedly dating her costar in One Fine Day.... how could she do this to me....
Thank goodness for Kuninaka Ryoko.... always waiting faithfully with Churasan to console me.

OK. I have to contradict myself. Ep 7 of Snow Queen.
Sung Yu Ri has morphed into her charactor "Kim Bo Ra". I now see her in the early stages of someone who will be a giant on the screen in a few more years. She has progressed from comedy to drama with excellent character immersion in both categories. This could turn out to be a 9/10 drama.

Then you haven't seen Toshiie TO Matsu. My all time favorite historical drama. Karasawa Toshiaki is fabulous and I was a big fan of his before I knew she existed.

It was the two guys that I remember and the interaction between the two. Geez mentioning ood fight scenes was what brought it to mind. I didnt finish the sgeries but I did watch about 15 eps. Which is a lot for me in that genre. _________________

If you are a Sung Yu Ri dedicated fan as I am, or, a Hyun Bin dedicated fan, then this is for you. Nothing but wall to wall eye candy of these pleasant looking youths. Sung Yu Ri is outrageously gorgeous and for my money can just stand there for 15 episodes. It's 16 epis but she does not appear until the 2nd epi.

Tae Woong feels responsible for his best friends death and spends the next 8 years in self inflicted guilt and it feels like 8 years of watching this dragged out nonsense premise. If it were nor for Sung Yu Ri I would have been in FF heaven.
Happened to watch ch 18.1 last night around 10PM and lo and behold there was SungYu Ri. She is appearing more and more often now. The drama is called "Swallow The Sun" and is 25 episodes. So I googled it and found it for sale from Hong Kong for $18 including postage with Eng and Chinese subs. I ordered it immediately. Now let's see if the subs are really English or the Hong Kong version of English.
Ep 2. One Fine Day. More of a story (so far) than Snow Queen; but not as smooth in photography. And in ep 1, there must have been an election day when this was ripped from TV. The bottom of the screen kept showing % figures in Korean script that could only be from an election recap. Very annoying. But once again, with Sung Yu Ri's appearance all annoyances are forgotten.

You know that's funny. I've been d/l the subs from there just in case I have to re-author the series. I'm a quality freak and it's been my experience that BT dramas tend to be low quality. That's why I want the Hong Kong discs. There are 8 DVDs in the set which means they probably have 3 episodes per disc which have to be better quality than the BT versions. Moreover I never d/l a BT drama. I don't have the patience to wait that many weeks to d/l one drama with the snail pace of BT.

Have you tried the 2008 cable drama (just 8 episodes!!!) 
The plot is tight and riveting, although I can't promise you it doesn't have its share of weepy moments. Still, the sadness is really part of the experience, and never feels gratuitous or contrived.

) SYR was extremely cute in it, although the scenery is far from any tropical paradise. The setting is a mountain forest thingy, in the dead of winter, so everyone is neatly bundled up--alas, even SYR. 
Um, these are dramas she did 
But I agree, the supporting cast rocked, especially the somersault-happy Hedgehog dude (I've seen this actor in countless K-dramas, and I love him to bits).
