Though not technically a sports drama, I'd recommend you see Coach, a 1996 dorama starring Asano Atsuko and a number of really good veteran actors/actresses. Baseball is an ancillary (albeit very important) component in this very good (imo) series.

Juswatched the likes of summer snow, ai to shi wo mitsumete...literally made me cry my heart out! Shameful Cry
oh and watched the dorama TRIANGLE, which was awesome!
awesome OST, awesome CAST, has both mystery, action, romance! Bow recommended hehe

i just finished SMILE (blame me for not being able to watch without english subs), and for all its hammy moments, I LOVED IT. a must watch, IMHO. w00t!

Currently watching Jin (I love it even after only 2 episodes) and Sasaki Fusai no Jingi Naki Tatakai (simply hilarious).
Just finished Majo no Jouken, which I found good but somewhat forced sometimes.
