This time, Kitagawa has penned a story about family, involving a terminally ill mother (Mitsuko Baisho, 63) and her daughter (Tokiwa).

The "terminal illness" scenario, I thought this had run its course. Shake Head

Maybe Kitagawa can put a new slant on it, but I ain't holding my breath.

Or maybe the cast can inject some life (no pun intended) into the overused plot gimmick... Sweat

Fuji TV to launch weekday midnight drama with Taiwanese star

Fuji TV is trying out a new experiment: starting on April 26, it will broadcast a drama series titled "Tokyo Little Love" in a late-night weekday time slot. The drama is a romance story that will star Taiwanese idol Xia Yu Tong in her first lead role.

"Tokyo Little Love" will air late at 12:35am on Mondays through Thursdays, with each episodes lasting 10 minutes. The series will run until September, for a total of 88 episodes. This is the first of its kind for any of Japan's major television networks.

Fuji TV has also decided to broadcast the series on all 28 of its affiliated stations throughout the country, plus Aomori TV (affiliated with TBS). Normally, for a late night time slot, Fuji TV's stations have aired local programming, which makes this even more of an unusual experiment.

In "Tokyo Little Love," Xia Yu Tong plays a Taiwanese woman who gradually falls in love with a Japanese police detective. Producer Tsugi Shikanai says that it will tell a love story that could happen to anyone, and that the episodes will feel more like a diary or blog than a typical television series. Xia Yu Tong, who has appeared in Taiwanese dramas before, will speak her lines mainly in Chinese (with Japanese subtitles), though she is also studying Japanese for the role.

Oriconfs spring dorama expectations ranking

As usual Oricon made a survey to find out the most anticipated dorama of the new season as well. Unsurprisingly "Tsuki no Koibito ~Moon Lovers~" starring Kimura Takuya (37) topped this ranking as well and Oricon expects some very high ratings for this dorama.

Tsuki no Koibiti will be Kimutaku's first real love story in 10 years and star him as the company president of an interior design company. "It's a getsu9 dorama and it has Kimutaku, it's impossible not to have very high expectations," a female teenage voter said. However, it's not just him people are looking forward to. "I'm really excited, because it's Shinohara Ryoko's comeback dorama," another female voter in her thirties commented.

Second place goes "Team Batista 2" starring Ito Atsushi (26) and Nakamura Tooru (44). During the first season the two of them have already proven to be a great team and gathered a lot of male fans. In fact, this dorama would have topped the ranking if they've only counted the male voters. Third place goes to the dorama adaption of the fantasy comedy manga "Kaibutsu-kun" starring Ohno Satoshi (29) of the popular group Arashi.

"Shinzanmono" starring Abe Hiroshi (45) and Kuroki Meisa (21) made it on the fourth place while the Twitter dorama "Sunao ni Narenakute" starring Ueno Juri (23) and Eita (27) unfortunately only ranked fifth. The biggest surprise of the ranking is the fact that "Mother" didn't make it into the Top 10.

Top 10:

01 – Tsuki no Koibito ~Moon Lovers~
02 – Team Batista 2: General Rouge no Gaisen
03 – Kaibutsu-kun
04 – Shinzanmono
05 – Sunao ni Narenakute
06 – Gegege no Nyobo (morning dorama)
07 – Keibuho Yabe Kenzo
08 – Yankee-kun to Megane-chan
09 – Zettai Reido: Mikaiketsu Jiken Tokumei Sousa
10 – Tumbling

Odagiri to star in "Atami no Sousakan"

Actor Joe Odagiri will star in a new drama series this summer on TV Asahi, titled "Atami no Sousakan." The show reunites Odagiri with director and screenwriter Satoshi Miki, whom he worked with on the popular mystery series "Jikou Keisatsu" in 2006 and 2007.

"Atami no Sousakan" begins with the disappearance of a school bus and four high school girls. Still unsolved three years later, the case gets revived when one of the girls reappears. Nozomi Sasaki to star in sumo drama

Fashion model Nozomi Sasaki now has her first starring role in a drama series, though it will unexpectedly be about sumo wrestling. Tentatively titled "Dohyo Girl," the story follows a young girl trying to save a high school sumo club from being abolished.

When she accidentally ends up as a member of the school's dying sumo club, she takes on the role of the club's director in order to rebuild it.

Some of the male sumo club members will be recruited through this week's issue of Weekly Young Jump. The series begins in July, airing at 12:50am on Tuesday nights on TBS. It will also air weekly on MBS on Thursdays.

Alisa Mizuki's first starring role in NHK series

Popular actress Alisa Mizuki is set to star in a short drama series on NHK this summer, titled "Tenshi no Wakemae." The story is an original penned by Noriko Yoshida, the screenwriter for dramas such as "Dr. Koto Shinryojo" and "Hatachi no Koibito."

Mizuki has starred in at least one drama series every year since 1992, but this will be her first time leading a series on NHK. (In 2003, she starred in a single episode of an omnibus drama on NHK.)

In "Tenshi no Wakemae," Mizuki plays a 35-year-old woman named Kurumi, who suddenly loses everything in her life when her fiance runs off with all of her assets. Left with a mere 15,000 yen and some boxes of ohagi (a type of rice ball), the despairing Kurumi happens upon a construction site, and she begins handing out the ohagi to the men working there. Using the theme of food, "Tenshi no Wakemae" depicts Kurumi's journey as she turns her life around.

Starting in July, NHK will broadcast the five-episode series in its Tuesday 10:00pm time slot.
