I really got in to Taiga dramas after my trip to Japan a couple years ago and this year my brother's getting married at a temple in Ichijo-ji where Musashi fought the Yoshioka clan. Anyways thanks again for the info i really appreciate it.

Yah I can't wait. After the wedding we will head down to Kunamoto to visit the cave where Musashi died. As you can tell by this trip my bro really likes Musashi and after watching the Taiga I can see why.

Your brother should check out the other Musashi films, like the much-praised Samurai Trilogy directed by Inagaki Hiroshi and starring Mifune Toshiro. Victory! Peace!

TV: Tokyo Friends, mini-series plus one movie, which I havenLt seen. Maybe Long Vacation, the great 90ties drama classic, Kimutaku plays a pianist.

Movies: Fish Story, Shonen Merikensack, Iden & Tity, Bandage and
Solanin - the later 2 are probably not yet available for download given they were released recently.

Watch out for: Beck the movie

Aoi Tokugawa Sandai

shin2 has recommended this more than once, and he seems to be one of the most knowledgeable jdrama people around.

Tenchijin seems to be a drama made up of idols... without a lot of believeable/absorbing content. That was the impression I got from reading other people's comments.

It's been a while since I've posted, as a lot of things have been going on. I never did finish watching the first episode of Joudan jai Nai! since I was warned that I would be wasting 9 hours of my life. Sweat I'm old, so I don't have that kind of time to throw away. Victory! Peace! To be honest, I only wanted to see it for Naoko Iijima. Naughty

Anyway, one of the things that happened while I was gone from here was my girlfriend and I broke up. So now I want to watch unromantic dramas.

I'm already planning on watching the second season of Koshonin. Also went through my collection and have re-started watching Boss, and have picked up where I left off with the first season of Furuhata Ninzaburo.

And, naturally, I'm looking for others. They don't have to be police shows. Or serious. Comedies are fine. Dramas are fine. Though I do tend to prefer shows with mature adults, as I can't relate to high school kids (I don't think I could even when I was in high school myself! rofl )

In catching up on the thread, I saved a bunch of good recommendations. I was also browsing on DW and finding stuff there. One show that looks interesting is Asami Mitsuhiko. Has anyone seen it?

Hi Whitehawk - sorry to hear that you separated from your GF.

Here are my recommendations - you may have seen already a few of those.

Police/Mystery: Unfair (plus 1 SP and 1movie), Gonzo, Keizoku (plus 1 SP and 1 movie), Scandal, Shika Otoko Awoniyoshi, Mop Girl, Ashita no Kita Yoshio, Trick 1-3 (plus countless SPs and movies and a spin-off)

Comedy: My boss my hero, Tiger and Dragon, Bengoshi no kuzu, Seigi no Mikata, Jikan Keisatsu 1 and 2, Shomuni 1-3

Other - may have some romantic elements but they are never the focus: Home Drama, Medaka, Lunch Queen, Hito ni Yasashiku, Suika, Haikei Chichiue-sama, Yasashii Jikan, Magerarenai Onna

Comedies: Ohsama no Resutoran (best written, best ensemble cast comedy dorama I've seen); Good Mourning (about a college lecturer who marries into a funeral business family and immediately becomes a widow); Coach (sardines, baseball, career resurrection); News no Onna (ignore the fanboy/fangirl flotsam and watch it for Suzuki Honami and Nagatsuka Kyozo), Shomuni (especially the first two seasons-silly and funny).

If you like Furuhata Ninzaburo, you would like Aibou (superior cop series) and Odoru Daisousasen (probably the most successful cop TV/movie franchise in Japanese entertainment history)

Serious drama: Shiroi Kyoto (great cast, excellent writing, compelling viewing)

Jidai-geki series: Yagyu Ichizoku no Inbo (Yagyu Conspiracy)--Sonny Chiba's best series, the acting and writing is above the usual TV jidai-geki.

Taiga dramas (pre-2000) and Asadora series have many mature actors in them who play significant roles in the stories.

I agree... Though getting a hold of all those episodes might be rather difficult. Sweat

Kita no Kuni Kara from 1981 is a much beloved dorama for Japanese TV audiences. It's a 24-episode series with most of the story taking place in Hokkaido; the locale is an indispensable part of the story. The great character actor Tanaka Kunie plays a simple proud man who has difficulty articulating his thoughts and feelings. His wife (Ishida Ayumi) leaves him for another man, so he takes his two young children (Yoshioka Hidetaka and Nakajima Tomoko) from Tokyo back to his home village in Hokkaido. The crux of the story deals with this family's struggle to survive in a challenging environment. Most of the series is from the point of view of the young son. All the characters (and there are quite a few of them) come across as real multi-dimensional people. Because the story takes place over the course of more than a year, you get to see all facets of Hokkaido from the brutal winters to the verdant summers.
I think this is an exceptional series, from the writing to the cast to the photography.

Haikei, Chichiue-sama feels very similar to "Yasashii jikan".
Not surprisingly, since author, producer and leading role were the same people...

Jikou Keisatsu? Sexy Voice and Robo?

Maybe GTO? There are not many of them now that you ask.
