I think it's the latter.

As I noticed when it was first announced that he would be Hidekatsu, I thought, "Meh..."

A casting choice for ratings, not acting ability, I think.

Fans had been talking about this new GOU trailer from BS puremappu, and Hidetada appeared in the trailer. I'm so dying to see it! But I can't find the new trailer anywhere Is there any new clip in baidu or anywhere else?

Hmm, I think it's more of a lack of chemistry between him and Juri, and not because of acting ability. Not to defend him or something, but he did win awards and they're critics awards, not popularity awards. So yup, I think it's just the chemistry. I mean if it's just for ratings, they better off casting TAKAHIRO instead as he's the most popular!

Mukai on the other hand, I'm more 'meh' with him than with AKIRA. IMO he's the overrated one (seems to be coasting along with his good looks more than anything), and the only time I'm mildly impressed with him was in Gegege no Nyoubo and even then it's not much. Well, people do have different opinions, I guess.

I thought they looked pretty good together at the cast presentation last year:

Haven't seen ep18 yet, but as for Hidekatsu, I'm not much interested in that storyline and I'd been waiting for him to be sent off to battle anyway.

You've watched Ep18? So you also think he don't have chemistry with Juri?

His acting is okay, though I'm a bit bothered with the way he laughs. Also, he has quite a high-pitched voice that I think doesn't fit in with jidaigeki drama where the guys always make up their voices deep and low.

Actually I have quite expectation on AKIRA, since I think his looks suits Toyotomi Hidekatsu very well. Too bad it didn't liven up to my expectation.

But then again, the script haven't give him much of any good scenes either. Seem like the writer is not a fan of Hidekatsu XD Furthermore, Toyotomi Hidekatsu himself is not so much of an important historical figure, if not forgettable XD Poor Akira. Still hoping that Hidekatsu gets better in the later eps, though.
But so far, Hidekatsu's appearance somehow only made me missing Kazunari-sama more

I was actually wondering about that too. I didn't know AKIRA is popular enough to bring in the ratings, but I dunno... EXILE's popularity is rising lately, maybe he actually is XD

If it's a casting for ratings I agree it would be Mukai. Although I'm a big fan of Mukai and I'm so anticipating his appearance, but some parts of me are kind of worried too, that his performance as Hidetada will disappoint me XD His best acting performance so far was "Gegege no Nyobo" only, and I'm worried he won't be able to repeat that same acting quality XD I mean, he was terrible in Shinzanmono So, I'm still trying to press down my expectation here, lol.

But btw, GOU producers have told the story abt casting Mukai. It was during the "Gegege" presscon (BEFORE it was broadcasted at all), that the producers decided to cast Mukai as Hidetada, so I think it was not a 'to-bring-in-ratings' casting.

IMO, I think script sometimes have alot to do with the casts' chemistry too.

Based on reading the novel, I think the story would give better chance for Mukai and Juri to have much better chemistry. Hidekatsu had TOO little appearance in the novel. And so far, it doesn't seem like the scriptwriter had any intention to fix that in the drama's script (except for the Hidetada-Gou-Hidekatsu scene addition)

Just finished watching Episode 18.

The scenes with Hideyoshi and Chacha made me cringe.

LOL, and Hideyoshi changes his name yet again to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Well I think he used to be like 3rd or 4th most popular member, but since the new members joined his popularity went down 2/3 ranks. Takahiro remains the most popular one though, but the boy doesn't want to do acting!

Back to AKIRA's acting, yup I think there's something missing in his portrayal of the character. His forte is actually intense, angry characters anyway. He has real melancholic, expressive eyes when playing those type of characters.

Hoping that Mukai-Juri chemistry will be better.

As far as I know Gō had her name changed a few times too.

As for EP18 I find again O-ne as one of the best characters. Otake Shinobu is doing an excellent job!

LOL, how can I forgot Chacha-Hideyoshi (look like the azai sister destined to be with Hide-man :p). I think ep16-17 to make development for them from hate-respect-and-then love. Guess the writer will make she tried her best to denial that, since his the enemy (as a reason). But you can see her feeling about him already changed. Even Gou could saw that, so she more violent than before (not that I mad )
