Hopefully you don't dress like him either (although a turban and loincloth would keep you comfortable during the Southern California summers).

OK, beem, if you had to pick one or the other movie to watch, would it be Gunga Din or The Man Who Would Be King?

Not this summer: it's been pretty mild so far. Smile

Matsu Takako, Abe Sadao star as swindlers in Nishikawa Miwafs gYume Uru Futarih August 15, 2011

Director Nishikawa Miwa (gDear Doctor,h gYureruh) is working on a new movie titled gYume Uru Futari,h starring Matsu Takako and Abe Sadao.

Matsu and Abe play a married couple who run a small restaurant, but one day they lose their shop and all of their assets in a fire. Unable to give up their dream of running a restaurant, they are determined to do whatever it takes to raise enough money to start over. They ultimately decide to get that money through a series of marriage frauds, with the wife (Matsu) picking out the target women and devising the plans, while the husband (Abe) actually carries out the fraud.

Nishikawa has reportedly been working on the story since about 5 years ago. She researched for the movie by talking to women who had actually encountered marriage fraud and detectives who had investigated the incidents. She began writing the screenplay at the start of this year.

Filming will begin on August 20 and is expected to finish in early October. The movie is scheduled for release in Japan in autumn 2012.

In the past couple years, Matsu starred in the award-winning films gKokuhakuh and gViyon no Tsuma.h Abefs last starring movie role was in gNakumonkah in 2009, but he also had one of the lead roles in the hit television drama gMarumo no Okiteh this past spring.

Good for Matsu! I just caught an Eiga Sai 2011 screening of VILLON'S WIFE last night, and Matsu was even better here than in CONFESSIONS. Terrific ensemble cast, all the perfs blew me away. Bow (But I'd never want to be any of the characters they portrayed, that's for sure. Mr Green) The whole movie feels like an existentialist play, a post-War Japan reimagining of "No Exit" or something. "Hell is other people," you know? Shake Head Still, I could not rec this movie enufff Applaud

Takakura Ken reunites with director Furuhata Yasuo for first film in 6 years
August 24, 2011

Takakura Ken is coming back to the big screen with his first film in roughly 6 years. He will play the lead role in gAnata e,h the latest movie from director Furuhata Yasuo. Furuhata previously directed several of Takakurafs best known works, including gPoppoya,h gYasha,h and gA, Un.h

gAnata eh will be Takakurafs 205th film, and his 19th working with Furuhata. The movie is based on a draft left behind by gYashah and gA, Unh producer Ichiko Seichi, who died in 2008. Furuhata and screenwriter Aoshima Takeshi reworked the story, resulting in the current script.

Takakura plays the part of Kurashima Eiji, a guidance officer at a prison in the Hokuriku region. Believing that he would go through life single, he unexpectedly gets married just before the age of 50 to a singer named Yoko who visited the prison. However, the happy marriage ends 15 years later as Yoko passes away at the young age of 53. Eiji then receives a letter left by his wife, asking him to scatter her ashes in the sea of her hometown. Wondering why she never told him of her wish while she was alive, he sets out on a journey across Japan to Kyushu, driving in the camping car that they had planned to use for a trip around the country.

Cameras will begin rolling on September 7, and filming is expected to wrap up in mid-November. Theatrical release is planned for fall 2012.

On August 30th, a special party celebrating the completion of the film adaptation of gMotekih was held in Roppongi, Tokyo.

The movie stars actors Moriyama Mirai, who will play the moviefs protagonist, as well as his co-stars Nagasawa Masami, Asou Kumiko, Naka Riisa, and Maki Youko. The story chronicles the experience of Fujimoto Yukiyo, a thirty-year-old temporary worker who has never had much luck with women but suddenly finds himself becoming very popular with the ladies. gLast year up until this year was the most popular with ladies Ifd been in my entire life,h Moriyama said jokingly.

gMotekih was a regular series in the Kodansha serialization gEveningh from 2008 to 2010, and ended with a total of 180 chapter across four volumes. The manga inspired a successful drama series of the same name that aired for several months last year, and also featured Moriyama as the lead. For the movie adaptation, Fujimoto graduates from being a temporary work and starts a new life as a writer on a news site utilizing a completely original story written by Kobo Mitsurou himself. Now thirty-one years old, Fujimoto experiences yet another gmotekih (period of time when one is popular with the opposite sex) and attracts four completely different women.

In the movie, Nagasawa Masami plays a cute magazine editor named Matsuo Miyuki who gets to know Fujimoto over Twitter, and also possesses a gmurderous smileh. Asou Kumiko will join in as Miyukifs close friend Masumoto Rumiko, a simple and naive woman who greverse confessesh to Fujimoto. Ai, a mysterious woman who works at a girls bar and greverse proposesh to the lucky main character, will be played by Naka Riisa. Lastly, Maki Youko will charm viewers with her character Karaki Motoko, a woman with a vicious mouth and a propensity for dirty jokes.

The main theme song is titled gDiscog, and will be provided by Jooubachi. gYoake no BEATg, the FUJIFABRIC song that served as the opening theme to the drama, will return for a reprise role as the opening track for the movie. gItfs a movie so packed with J-POP and J-ROCK that youfll enjoy how we ended up whittling it down,h Moriyama said brightly about the upcoming film.

gMotekih will hit theaters on September 23rd.

Tabe Mikako replaces Toda Erika in new gLIAR GAMEh movie
October 5, 2011

The popular live-action drama series gLIAR GAMEh is getting another theatrical film, it has been revealed. Matsuda Shota will reprise his role as the brilliant swindler Akiyama Shinichi. Although Toda Erika was the star of the drama series and the previous movie, Tabe Mikako will be playing the heroine of the new film.

Based on a manga by Kaitani Shinobu, the gLIAR GAMEh drama series has had two seasons in 2007 and 2009. A theatrical movie was released in March 2010.

The new movie will retain the same basic concept of the series, but the lead character Kanzaki Nao (played by Toda) is being replaced with a similar character named Shinomiya (Tabe). Like Kanzaki, Shinomiya is an innocent college student who gets involved in a high-stakes game of deception. This time, the story is set on a deserted island where 19 players are competing for 2 billion yen.

Matsuyama Hiroaki will direct again. Filming starts on October 10, and theatrical release is scheduled for March 3, 2012.

This fits also the 2 movies I watched recently, Ashita no Joe (Tomorrow's Joe) and Gantz part one, both based on mangas.

Now the good thing about Ashita is that there is little dialogue (Yamashita Tomohisa has perhaps 15 lines - trust me that's a good thing) and lots of nicely filmed boxing scenes. The plot is so tired though, you can watch it regularly on National Geographic: the older bull gets killed by the younger hungry one.

Now Gantz, same thing great action scenes, terrible dialogues. Also it was super-softened down - the original is quite crude and cynical (slightly porn too), but instead we have the Johnny du jour saving the day hehe Not sure if I will watch the second one.

Speaking of Ryoko and movies (which we were in another thread): Mr Green

Uchida Kenjifs next film stars Sakai Masato, Kagawa Teruyuki, Hirosue Ryoko
October 12, 2011

Movie director Uchida Kenji is working on his first film since gAfter Schoolh in 2008, titled gKagi Dorobou no Method.h gAfter Schoolh star Sakai Masato will again take on the lead role, this time supported by Kagawa Teruyuki and Hirosue Ryoko.

Described as a gscrewball comedy,h Uchidafs new work revolves around a 35-year-old unemployed, aspiring actor named Sakurai who contemplates suicide after constantly facing setbacks. Before heading off to kill himself, he stops at a public bathhouse, where a well-to-do man named Kondo (Kagawa) collapses in front of his eyes and loses his memory. On a sudden impulse, he decides to swap their locker keys and assume Kondofs identity. But with his new identity, he soon finds himself involved in some trouble with the yakuza.

Meanwhile, the real Kondo, who now believes that he is Sakurai, meets a woman named Kanae (Hirosue) at the hospital, and their encounter gives him the opportunity to rebuild his life.

Uchida previously won four awards at the Cannes Film Festival with his 2005 film gUnmei Janai Hitoh (gA Stranger of Mineh). His next film, gAfter School,h was a big success, grossing approximately 600 million yen at the box office even though it played in only 78 theaters.

gKagi Dorobou no Methodh started filming on October 12 and will wrap up in late November. The movie is currently planned for a fall 2012 release.
