Romain Grosjean has been banned for one race by Belgian GP stewards for triggering the massive first-corner collision in Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix.

The Frenchman will sit out next weekend's Italian GP at Monza after stewards at Spa ruled that he had been at fault for causing the big collision which took out for drivers on the spot at the first corner. Grosjean has also been given a €50,000 fine.

Announcing their verdict more than two hours after the end of the race which was won by McLaren's Jenson Button, stewards issued a strongly-worded rebuke of the Lotus driver.

"The stewards regard this incident as an extremely serious breach of the regulations which had the potential to cause injury to others," the statement read.

"It eliminated leading championship contenders from the race."

"The stewards note the team conceded the action of the driver was an extremely serious mistake and an error of judgement. Neither the team nor the driver made any submission in mitigation of penalty."

Replays of the incident showed that the Lotus driver, who had started from eighth on the grid, squeezed Lewis Hamilton onto the grass as the McLaren driver attempted to go down the outside of him, causing the Briton to lose control of his car and plough into the back of the Lotus.

This sent Grosjean onto a collision course with the Sauber of Sergio Perez, who he vaulted over the back of, and across the nose of Fernando Alonso's Ferrari, putting all three drivers out on the spot along with Hamilton and damaging the other Sauber of Kamui Kobayashi.

Lewis Hamilton is on the verge of leaving McLaren to drive for Mercedes next season, according to BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan.

The former team boss says Hamilton will replace Michael Schumacher, who will retire from driving for a second time at the end of the year.

"I believe Hamilton and Mercedes have already agreed personal terms and a deal could be imminent," Jordan said.

In a statement Mercedes said they "do not comment on speculation".

But they added: "Until we are in a position to confirm our full driver line-up for next season, it is inevitable that there will be speculation around this topic."

A McLaren spokesman said: "We have been told by Lewis Hamilton's management team that the story is untrue.

"Negotiations between Lewis Hamilton and McLaren [over a new contract] continue."

Hamilton's management team XIX Entertainment also released a statement, saying: "As mentioned in the past by all parties, we are in advanced discussions with McLaren about a new deal.

I think this is a great idea!!

TV show to reunite people with their old cars

Perhaps the only fantasy in the collector car world as common as the gI wish I had a time machine to go back and buy all the cool cars before they got expensiveh daydream is the one in which people wish they had their old high-school car back. In most cases, however, that old high-school car disappeared decades ago, presumably never to be seen again. A new TV show, however, aims to change all that.

Restoration Reunion, a show currently in development from London- and Santa Monica-based Firecracker Films, has put out a call for classic car enthusiasts who would like to find their old cars. gYou know, the one you took to the drive-in filled with all your friends, or the one you paraded the love of your life in, or the one you religiously washed and waxed every weekend while the neighborhood kids watched,h Firecracker Films wrote. The producers are also opening up the show to people looking to surprise spouses, partners or parents with their old cars. While it would be ideal for interested people to have the VIN and photos of the missing car, the showfs producers said itfs not necessary.

Anybody who would like to participate in the show should email [email protected] sometime within the next couple of weeks.
