Nobel prize winner praises Arashi’s Sho Sakurai

rashi’s Sho Sakurai (28) traveled to Moscow to meet a former head of state and to the Berlin wall as part of his special report for Nippon TV’s 24Hr TV, reports Sports Hochi.

Sho Sakurai will appear on this year's 24Hr TV, hosted by TOKIO

Sakurai’s special, titled “嵐・櫻井翔が緊急リポート! 世界の貧困と格差社会の現実〜マンホールで暮らす人々とは〜 (Arashi - Sho Sakurai’s Breaking News! The reality of global poverty and social disparity ~people who live in manholes~ )” sent him to Moscow to interview Nobel Peace Prize winning former head of state Mikhail Gorbachev (79).

Mr Gorbachev is widely known as the man whose actions lead to the end of the Cold War around the late 1980s, early 1990s. After Mr Gorbachev heard Sakurai had been interviewing a wide range of people in different places for his “NEWS ZERO” series “世界平和への祈り (Sekai Heiwa heno Inori, A Prayer for World Peace)” over the past year, the nobel prize winner applauded Sakurai for his efforts.

“I am very happy to meet a responsible person like you.

“I hope more and more people will be able to think not only about themselves, but also about the suffering the people around them are going through, and want to help them,” he said.

After Sakurai had introduced himself in Russian, Mr Gorbachev pushed aside Sakurai’s prepared notes.

“I want to hear about your opinions,” he told a confused Sakurai.

The interview went on for more than 30 minutes, during which the two talked about poverty, economic instability, and peace operations.

It has been reported Sakurai was still shaking after his interview.

“It was an incredible priviledge to have met a person I watched on the news as a young boy,” he said.

His latest adventure had sent him reporting from Moscow to the Berlin wall, and to Romania.

“It’s been 20 years since the Cold War ended. How has the world changed. I hope I can make people in Japan think about how one person’s situation can affect others,” he said.

“嵐・櫻井翔が緊急リポート! 世界の貧困と格差社会の現実〜マンホールで暮らす人々とは〜 (Arashi - Sho Sakurai’s Breaking News! The reality of global poverty and social disparity ~people who live in manholes~ )” will air on “24時間テレビ33「愛は地球を救う」(24Hr TV 33 ‘Love Saves the Earth’)” on August 29 in Japan.

Sho Sakurai to star in FujiTV New Year's drama special

Arashi's Sakurai Sho will be starring in the FujiTV New Year drama SP "Kimi ni sasageru Emblem" (The emblem I want to offer to you) which is based on the true story of former J-league soccer player Kyoya Kazuyuki. Kyoya met with an accident in 1993 which led to spine injuries thus causing him to retire from soccer. He later became a wheelchair basketball player.

Sakurai plays the role of Takajou Kazuya who is modeled after Kyoya in the drama SP. Kazuya was chosen as a national team player and about to get married when he met with an accident that left him with spine injuries and having to move around in a wheelchair. With the support of his wife, Kazuya becomes a wheelchair basketball player with the dream of participating in the Paralympics.

The production crew spent 5 years interviewing Kyoya and people involved in the sport of wheelchair basketball. Their intention is not to produce a tearjerker about handicapped people but rather to show how people refuse to be defeated by difficulties in life. Sakurai had interviewed people who participated in wheelchair basketball when he was doing a TV feature on sports for the handicapped so he finds that it's meaningful to be able to participate in this drama which features such sports. However, he is worried about the wheelchair basketball scenes since he tried doing that before and it was a very tough experience for him. On the other hand, he is glad that he had played soccer up till he was in the second year of junior high so he should be able to manage the soccer scenes in the drama. Sakurai is expected to undergo training from Kyoya after the end of the Paralympics this year as the latter is away in Rio de Janeiro as the assistant coach for the wheelchair basketball team.

Sho Sakurai to star in movie "Rapurasu no Majo"

Sakurai Sho will be starring in the new real-life adaptation movie "Rapurasu no Majo" (Laplace's Witch) directed by Miike Takashi which will be the commemorative work to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Higashino Keigo's debut as a writer.

The movie which is based on the same-titled novel by Higashino, will be Sakurai's first leading role in a movie since "Kamisama no Karute 2" 4 years ago and his first collaboration with Miike in 9 years since "Yattaman". The novel which had sold more than 280,000 copies to date, had 12 companies fighting for the adaptation rights.

The story describes how two cases of people poisoned to death by hydrogen sulfide at hot springs in two separate locations seem unrelated at first but it turns out that they were acquaintances. As such, the police approaches Professor Aoe Shusuke (Sakurai) who is also a geochemist to assist in their investigations to confirm if the deaths were due to accidents or foul play. During the process, Aoe meets a mysterious girl Uhara Madoka (Hirose Suzu) who appears at the crime scene and seems to have the power to predict when a natural phenomenon will happen. While Aoe is trying to ascertain if Madoka is involved in the cases, Madoka will be searching for a missing young man Amakasu Kento played by Fukushi Souta.

Filming began from 16 March and is expected to wrap up in late April. The movie will be shown in 2018.

Sho Sakurai to star in NTV 2017 Fall drama

Sakurai Sho will be starring in the new NTV Autumn 2017 drama "Saki ni umaretadake no boku" (I was only born earlier than you) which will begin its run from October in the Saturdays 10pm timeslot. The drama is based on an original script by Fukuda Yasushi who is known for works such as "HERO" and "Galileo" and will be directed by Mizuta Nobuo who has dramas like "Mother" and "Woman" under his belt.

Sakurai plays the role of Narumi Ryosuke, a 35-year-old former elite businessman who is transferred by his company Kashimatsu Bussan to become the principal of a private senior high school named Kyoumeikan Koukou and turn its fortune around. The struggling school's results are on the lower end of the spectrum, its sports teams aren't doing well in competitions and its enrollment numbers are about to slide below the minimum level required to keep it afloat. Narumi knows nothing about education nor managing a school so he has to rely on his knowledge as a businessman to deal with the situation and introduce reforms in Kyoumeikan with the aim of boosting enrollment numbers, improve the quality of the teachers and students and make the school profitable again. He is met with strong resistance from the students who have never savoured success and the teachers who have no motivation to improve but tries to show them the reality and harsh truths of society through his first-hand experience. The heroine Mashiba Chihiro who is at loggerheads at first with Narumi but later gets inspired by him will be played by Aoi Yu while Narumi's girlfriend cum former colleague Matsubara Satoko will be played by Tabe Mikako.

Sakurai who played a senior high school student in 2007 TBS drama "Yamada Taro Monogatari" when he was 25, expressed his surprise at being offered a role of a young 35-year-old school principal. It has been 4 years since he starred as the lead in a drama series since 2013's FujiTV drama "Kazoku Game" so he hopes to be able to grow with his character who transforms from a businessman to a school principal. Aoi who had experience working with Sakurai in the movie "Hachimitsu to Clover", praised him for being a respectable leading actor who is calm, clever and can be relied on. Tabe who last worked with Sakurai 10 years ago in "Yamada Taro Monogatari", expressed anticipation at how they will interact this time since the nature of their characters' relationship is different from 10 years ago.
