I finished this series.
I like the ending, but wished something more would've happened though.

If anything a SP would be nice.

Just had to say that the episode guest starring Kame from KAT-TUN tripped me out in that...I hadn't seen him in anything for a long time and he's always been razor thin, the guy. I mean his bony face had a sharp chin that could open letters....he's obviously not fat at all but the kid gained a lot of weight or something recently b/c I really didn't even recognize him even after seeing him on screen for several minutes.

Railways welcome female train fans aboard

The Yomiuri Shimbun

Although railway enthusiasm is seen as a minority--and almost exclusively male--hobby in Japan, an increasing number of women have recently taken an interest in traveling by rail, collecting railway memorabilia and reading timetables.

They are nicknamed "tetsuko," formed from the name for their male counterparts, tetchan, and the Japanese word for railway, "tetsudo."

Increasing numbers of women are enjoying traveling alone in a relaxed manner while the cartoon series "Tetsuko no Tabi" (Tetsuko's Travel) about a female cartoonist traveling with a male railway buff writer has never been more popular.

The railway industry and its related businesses have welcomed the emergence of tetsuko.

Kunio Suzuki, who three years ago opened Ginza Panorama, a bar where model trains run along the counter and are sold, was surprised by the change in clientele.

Their customers had been almost exclusively male, but more and more couples and women began to frequent the bar from last year. Now, there are some days when women outnumber men.

"Although railway enthusiasm is considered the king of hobbies in Europe, railways as a hobby had an unspectacular image here. The increase in tetsuko is more than welcome," said Suzuki, 44.

This year Jikokuhyo Kentei Kyokai (the railway timetable certification association) will offer beginners a trial examination for the railway timetable reading certificate. Twenty-five percent of the applicants for the first trial test, known as the timetable traveling certification, which includes a mock test you can try at home, were women.

According to the association, an increasing number of women have requested to apply for the actual test this year. Last year, only 10 percent of examinees were female.

Many women are also visiting the Great Railway Expo--which includes The Yomiuri Shimbun among its sponsors--at the Edo-Tokyo Museum in Tokyo.

"Trains have a charm in that they all have their own personalities," said a 34-year-old woman who came to the expo on a Toden Arakawa Line streetcar after taking a sleeper from Osaka. "The one that attracts me most at the moment is the Wakayama Electric Railway's Ichigo EC, which has strawberries painted on it."

A series called Tetsuko no Tabi that ran from 2001 until last autumn in a manga magazine published by Shogakukan Inc. also played its part in making trains popular with women.

It is an account of a female manga artist who traveled the nation's railways with a rail-enthusiast writer.

All six volumes of the manga compiled in book form sold about 500,000 copies and an animation began on satellite TV in June.

The manga's editor, Masaki Kamimura, 34, says that fan letters have come not just from young women, but also from children and elderly women.

The travel industry is also keeping tabs on female rail fans.

Named after Tetsuko no Tabi, Nippon Travel Agency Co. in June put together a package tour where people get on and off at every station along the Choshi Electric Railway-- a local line in Chiba Prefecture.

About one-third of travelers have been women.

Japan Travel Bureau's Shinjuku branch is catering to women with its plan to offer from this autumn tours where they can ride on the new Taiwan High Speed Rail and steam locomotives in Taiwan.

"The number of women traveling alone has increased," said a branch salesperson. "Rather than a vacation where a person just goes to a destination, people can now enjoy a trip where the train journey is the holiday."

I only got this series because someone on my friends page was raving about it and mentioned that Tanaka Koki was charismatic in it. Tanaka Koki (of the KAT-TUN's "Make U Wet" fame) was really a "how in the world do people think he's hot?" type of person and I just did not get it at all. *waits for disgruntled fangirls to attack* I tried watching My Boss, My Hero and I still did not get it. With Tokkyu Tanaka 3-gou, I finally do.

I'm already on the 8th episode of this and his goofiness, amusingly arrogant behavior (or high self-esteem, take your pick), and all-around nice guy attitude really made me warm up to him.

The show itself was a nice surprise. Full of humor, and the theme of friendship, while it's a typical comedy, it also pulled me in with the cast that they had.

The colorful cast includes Kill Bill's Kuriyama Chiaki, looking really feminine and pretty and also demure compared to the first and only role I've seen her in to Akiyama Ryuji (Momoyama), the rich, but "tetsu" obsessed guy who failed graduate from college several times. Tsukamoto Takashi, whom I've most recently encountered in Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, plays a handsome, but shy guy who also is a tetsu otaku.

For my thoughts on some of the cast, though some may think that Tsukamoto's character was handsome, I found myself growing fond of Momoyama's character, mostly because he looks like someone I had a crush on in high school. ^_^ I also thought that Mishima (Me-teru's ex) was kind of cute...until he reminded me of a Japanese version of Clay Aiken. bleh And I thought that Makita (the co-worker who seems interested in Terumi) looked very familiar and was surprised that he played Matsuoka in Honmamon! Wow, he sure did change from the cute, but forgettable and one-dimensional guy to someone who I consider to be kakko ii.

I'll probably write my thoughts again after I finish this series. Thumbsup
