hello, i am looking to invest in a electronic english japanese dictionary/kanji dict. i know these run expensive so, i was wondering if anyone has any particular recommendations as to which are good and which are not. i know seiko makes a whole bunch of models tailored to japanese students learning english. however, in my case i am an english student learning japanese. so, if anyone has any advice, i would appreciate it. thank you

A lot of Japanese girls who come from Japan to study English in Hawaii use the Casio version/models. I heard those are pretty good. And I think that they are pretty good going vice versa. Just make sure you get the English ready equiped one rather than the Japanese ones. Seiko does make some good ones, but from what I heard, I'd put my money on Casio.



btw, you're the same Kazuichi-kun on Kikutv.com huh? If you are I'm Ahoyanen over there and we were talking about how dope Yada Akiko was in the Hotman thread! Don't know if you've been there recently, but a Hotman special is coming out. My denshi-jisho (electronic dictionary) is the top Casio model that I bought in Osaka a while ago..

Casio models are the most expensive compared to the others Seiko, Canon, etc but they are worth the extra money in my eyes.

If you don't know how to use a denshi jisho properly and can't be bothered learning, then you're wasting your time/money. A lot of my classmates here in Japan don't know how to work them except for a quick translation.. with which they can't read/do anything with.

If Kiku doesn't play it, I'll send it to you. Although my copy WON'T be subtitled. (If that's alright with you) As far as payment goes, don't worry about it. I got a crap load of used tapes from work that I'll be using to dubb your stuff. Just need your address though. (When and if the time comes)

mine is a SEIKO one, very pleased with it even though it burnt a hole in my pocket .....not too sure about your japanese lang level ...seiko has got some models for entry learners, one of which has got pronunciation........okie i think i am talking crap here.in any case, just remmebered that it is important to have the JUMP function, and other functions such as having a kanji dictionary will really depend on your needs. if you are really serious about learning the language few yrs down the road, then spend more to have the kanji dictionary, it will be very useful!!!!!! Actually whatever the brand is, most of them use the SAME dictionary, just a matter of which dictionary meets your needs in the course of studying japanese........ just my opinion

from what ive seen online and in stores....the two dominant brands appear to be sharp and seiko. i actually have not seen too many casio ones around. some of the sharp stuff looks appealing, though it is a tad bit expensive....how the hell did your denshi jisho burn a hole in your pocket??

So any idea on which one you're going to pick up yet? I'm not too familiar with Sharp and Seiko, so I wouldn't be able to give an honest opinion.

ahochaude, i was looking at this one here, http://store.aikotradingstore.com/sharppwa700.html.....its a bit pricy but, i think some of the features are worth the investment.....regardless of which i buy, it sure beats carrying around a kanji dictionary to do work...

Which one? The $330.00USD one? Damn that is hella expensive! Man, you must have some scripts to blow, huh?! I just stick with old school style and refer to the dictionary whenever I get home.

u referring to the CANON wordtank G55??my SEIKO has almost the same functions and dictionary....still cant figure out what is the differences.....actually, you might wish to find a model which does not have english-english function...think you mite not need it....and i am sure it will be cheaper also

There are a few important things about buying a electronic dictionary when you dont understand much Japanese.
First of all most or all of the dictionaries are designed for Japanese people. The Japanese to English dictionaries don�ft always cross over for every word in each dictionary. When you try to look up a word in English to find the Japanese word you usually get a Japanese definition not a single word. So you will need to learn to read the basic Japanese definition style and common words.
Most importantly you need one that has advanced "Jump" features. Jumping is what allows you to check for the definition of another word within a definition. The lower (cheaper) models have severe restrictions on what words you can look up. My Sharp PW-9800 which cost me about 45,000 yen, has what Sharp calls "Super Jump" where it allows me to look up every word that appears on the screen. This is very helpful if there is no English definition available. Its also very helpful to find the reading of kanji which you don�ft know.
All the higher Level models should have this but I know for a fact that most mid to low level models of all brands don't have this function, which I saw as necessary when I bought mine this summer....
The reason I chose the Sharp over the Seiko of equal value was because it had many more (essentially useless) dictionaries that are fun to play with, like Japanese proverbs and medical terms. But most of all I chose it because I preferred the Sharp interface and menu structure over the Seiko. I also had weeks to play around with these in stores before I bought mine (tax free) in Osaka.
