I think he's a very good actor. I've seen a couple people comment that they don't like him very much. Maybe because he's not as pretty as KimuTaku, or cool as Sorimachi Takashi. Instead I think he plays "regular guy" roles well.

I like how he trips over his words when he gets excited. I kinda do that myself sometimes Sweat

I can't remember any particular scenes. I first saw him in Beautiful Life some time ago. I thought he was good in that. And I like him in "Where is Love", even though I wasn't so fond of that series itself.

He played a somewhat atypical role in Kitamura Ryuhei's "Heat after dark", another movie of murderous mayhem that's a trademark of the director. But it shows he has the range to play action as well as drama.

I think he's a pretty good actor too. He makes a really good psycho for some reason. hehe

The role that stands out most in my mind was his character on Keizoku. Didn't make me cry, but gave me the willies! Sweat

Yeah, GREAT actor. He actually cites The Godfather as his favorite film.

I've seen this guy in everything from Best Partner (the first time I saw him act) to Beautiful Life (most underrated supporting role in J-drama history), to Inugami to Hojo Tokimune. Very versatile actor, gives Naoto Takenaka a run for his money.

Swallowtail Butterfly served as a defining moment for Watabe. Just a great role, great acting. It doesn't hurt the film showed that his command of the English language is probably the best among all East Asian actors.

I'd be very afraid if I were Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, or Ken Watanabe if a U.S. Hollywood agent discovered Watabe. No, scratch that -- ALL actors should be afraid if Watabe gets more international film roles.

That guy is absolutely brilliant!! There are scenes that only this guy can act where nobody else can.

I think he is the only good thing in the dorama "first love".

that isnt the reason why i dont like him cuz hes ugly.. but i honestly do like his roles, plus ive seen several shows of him in it, that're my favorite, it suits him very well.

its just that sometimes when he shutters 'neh, neh, neh' from the back of mind, i just wanna say shut up! its very annoying >___<

He totally mojo-riffic.

But I haven't seen those 2 you mention, so I guess I'll have to allow that there is the slight possibility that someone else might have more mojo.

I've become a big fan of Watabe Atsuro's.

From the shy, stuttering loser in Koi Ga Shitai

To the Comic relief (in a comedy which is a tough job) in Nanisama

To the comedic, yet touching role he played as the brother in Beautiful Life.

And he was an outstanding Samuri in Hojo Tokimuni. He played Tokomuni's brother, and the scenes when he got ticked off, or got into fights rivaled Watenabe Ken's for the best scenes in that whole series.

Then he shifted gears and became the tough, jaded, and suspected psycho serial killer cop in Keizoku.

All pretty diffenent characters, and I bought them all.

And then, as The Man mentioned, his role in "Swallow Tail" (By the way, this is the order I saw the shows in, not the order in which they came out)

His scenes with his partner (in the movie), Yamaguchi Tomoko really put Swallowtail Butterfly over the top for me. I'd pay money to see those two recreate those two characters in an action movie. Very very cool.

I should also mention how disconcerting it was when Watabe and Yamaguchi had their long briefing scene at the cafe. With both of them I'm so programmed to read the subtitles, I was half way through the scene before I realized that they were speaking English and I was staring at their chests.

Watabe reminds me a lot of Jimmy Stewart's early career in Hollywood. He got work because all the leading ladies of the day looked at him and said, yeah, I want to work with him. He's a pretty good actor, but he's not impressive enough to seal the focus from me.

Well, in the long run, Stewart became the mega star. And the ladies just faded away.

If Watabe gets a break, I think he's gonna be a very big star.

"ne ne ne ...ne...ne...cho ..cho...chotto..chotto..chotto....chotto matte"

THAT IS ONE OF HIS ACTUAL LINES Google
"IT CHOTTOU MATTE KUDASAI..JUST SPIT IT OUT ALREADY!"

but yeah i think i've been over-critical of the guy....HE IS A GOOD ACTOR, i still watch his dramas if i'm interested.... but i just don't pay much attention to his acting...

Probably the best character actor in Japanese dramas that I've seen. He disappears and becomes the character. I think his "ne ne ne" personality was created for the love dramas. You think he could get away from the ne's in a samurai drama? Just watch some of his other roles. =)

I think Atsuro Watabe is a great actor. I saw him in Koi ga Shitai x3, Inugami, and Koibumi and I thought he was really good in all of them!

I'm with Geezer...I think Watabe Atsuro is one of the finest Japanese actors I have seen. He was amazing in Hojo Tokimune. There was one scene in particular which I can always see in my mind. He had lost his wife ..and his little son had been taken into the palace to be brought up by his brother. The boy did not know him at all. Through the kindness of the Regent's wife the boy was brought to see the maps that the 'Visitor' had brought. When Watabe realised who this boy was and then had to pick him up and hold him so he could see the maps it was a revelation to see the espressions on his face. Joy, pride and heartbreak in one face in one take. That is acting to be appreciated.

The way he talks (more like stutters), behaves and his jolly and dense manners, Atsuro Watabe's good-for-nothing-guy-roles are perfect for him!

He's a great actor, too bad he's rather an under rated actor in the industry. A versatile actor, good-for-nothin-guy is at his best! Along side Miki Mizuno, they make the best couples on screen. Their chemistry match 100%, even more compatible than Kimutaku/Matsu Takako!
