Like I said: NBC is getting desperate... Why not take a chance?

I'd have to disagree to a degree here; while some of the shows obviously would require a bit of a stretch to cater to casual audiences, there are several that could very easily hang with the prime time TV shows (heck, one of the few that ws legitimately English-subbed, Odoru Daisousasen, does just that!).
If anything, the live drama groups need to work their way into the older fans out there whom watch Japanese animation (I was one of those who started up after watching PGSM for cryin out loud). They already have a feel for Japanese culture, plus storylines are built similar in a sense as well. It'd be a special interest thing either way, but the trick is these guys need not charge 50$ for a disc! |
The key words I used were some of these shows, I never said all of them. I also started watching J-dramas not long after I began watching anime. You're right people who watch anime could very easily start and enjoy j-dramas. But has popular as anime has become I still wouldn't call it mainstream. The Japanese TV station realize this, that's why they're not banking on the idea "well if anime sells then dramas will also sell."

The problem here is that the 'mainstream' got tainted by foreign blood well before it had a chance. When we've got "Americanized Manga" and "Americanized Anime" on the airwaves that simply copy the 'big eyes' art style but absolutely none of the substance, it scares off those who are willing to take it to the next level, and it sucks.
The biggest issue that US TV Studios have is that they believe that funding a 'miniseries' as they would be called at 10-12 episodes each should be a blockbuster thing with huge amounts of funding to draw any kind of audience. I really would like to see what the cost effectiveness of a JDrama is compared to an American show: because it appears these networks want long-lasting attach-rate TV shows, such a formula would be nigh impossible to sell.
Playing off of BMW's suggestion that we'll all agree on I'm sure, if NBC reserved a slot on Saturday nights from 9-10 (like there's anything ever on Saturdays!) that aired a single hot show and ran the formatting like a Japanese TV show (seasonal), it could help in starting a slow outflow. No way they'd risk putting such shows on primetime, but at least give it consistency and see if any 'cult fans' could grow from it!
Bah, screw it, let's just go hijack the nearest Fox affiliate and start our own JDTV!

Screw Saturdays... I say drop it in the middle of the week in primetime... What's NBC got to lose? They're in fourth place as it is...

That could pose a problem: I think a lot of Americans have an aversion to reading subtitles... Too much strain on that barely-passed-high school education.

Yeah, pretty similar. However, I kind of like the poll aspect as you don't have to go through 5 pages making a rough estimate how people like dramas.
I think this makes a fair thread given the poll and asking how one prefers to watch dramas. The others were about skipping dramas not subbed or watching an unsubbed drama. |
I llike the poll aspect too.
I need my subs preferably in understandable English. _________________

That's about a 70/30 split.
