Sorekara no Musashi 1996. 13 episode mini-series featuring Kitaoji Kinya as Musashi. It's sort of a further adventures of... Musashi. The duel on the island is actually the first episode of the piece.
I've been having some trouble, here in the era of the boy bands and the boopsies posing as actors, finding a series worth watching. So I decided to go retro.
"Sorekara no Mushshi" was made in 1996. The same year that gave us "Long Vacation" (Yamaguchi Tomoko) and "Coach" (Asano Atsuko).
That said... I was kind of shocked by this show. It's straight forward, old fashioned, highly stylized samurai melodrama. Aside from the fact that it was filmed in color, this show could just as well have aired in 1961 or even 1951.
And I would use that as a criticism... if only I wasn't enjoying the show so much.
Yup, it's old fashioned... and it's stagey... but there's somethiing to be said for the people who really knew how to pull off that old style.
Physically, Kitaoji simply doesn't fit the image of a TV action hero. But as I watched I realized that he does look like those old Japanese paintings of Musashi.
This one doesn't offer the occasional lightness or outright comedy of a "Zatoichi"... but I'm 5 episodes in and I'm just enjoying myself.
By the way... Sugimoto Aya is in this as well. But she's almost unrecognizable. Between the kimono, the wig, and the flat white make-up, the only reason I know she's in it is because her name comes up in the credits at the end of every episode. _________________ Manga is to Literature

BMW
The blurb on this one mentions a Musashi mini series from 1981... but this one is supposed to be from '96. And yeah, it looks and feels older.
One addition they made to this one... they bring in the Yagu clan to give Musashi someone to kill while he's off trying to "find" himself.
I'll give you an update once I've finished... but my bet is, if this show keeps going the way it is, it's something you'll enjoy. _________________ Manga is to Literature

Interesting.
The 2003 Taiga had the Yagyu Clan as an integral part in Musashi's development...

Really? Then maybe the title should be changed to "What Japanese dramas are you currently watching?" Since it only said dramas, I figured Korean ones could be mentioned.
