I guess hollywood still stereotyped asian actors/actresses to be very skillfull in martial arts like Jacky Chan and Jet li or even Kelly Hu, Michelle Yeoh, zhang zi yi to kick ass in action movie. They should see how talented asian actors/actresses are. They are very good in serious drama or other non-action film. Just hate Hollywood sometimes...Look at Hollywood now, they borrow or even buy ideas from asian film (RING, the EYE, Infernal affairs) it seems that they have been loosing some original ideas for their movie production. Yeah, not all asians knows martial arts (chan, yeoh, li, etc), have guns a'blazing (chow yun faht), are in yakuza/triads (Black Rain). There are asians out there just like any other regular joes working a normal office jobs just to pay the bills. Ah, who am I kidding, those kind of movies don't sell here in america.

It's not easy for Asian stars gainin footholds in the US. Asian movies don't have cinema releases in the US, exceptions are the blockbusters. Music, nope. English vocals are required. There are always fans, they're just minority of the larger audience. For instance, take a look at Seiko Matsuda. Some of you know what happened to her music career and "conquerin the west" in the 90's.

Significantly easier in vice versa, explanation not necessary.

Seiko-chan. They used to compare her like a "Japanese Madonna". Larger than life, changes like a chameleon, and always churning out the hits in their days.

If anyone would have made it big here, it would have been her. Doricom (Dreams Come True) tried it also in the mid/late 90's to no avail.

The only musicians to come out of Japan here in the west is, IMHO, junk bubble-gum music like shonen knife and puffy. I really do wish some of the bigger musicians with more substance & clout can crossover. If not musicians, than at least just stars in general. It dos,'t even have to be from JPN, HK or Korean would be fine.

hrmm...t his is kind of off topic, but. Since you all seem to be fans of movies about Japan did you know that the Kill Bill version that is going to be released in Japan is different than the one being released in the states? Well i know that PART 1 is going to be different in Japan than PART 1 in the states im not sure about PART 2. I heard its going to be bloodier cuz you know the Japanese and their BLOOD they like it and they like lots of it to be spewing all over the place 20ft in the air like a spray can.

I believe so. Tom Cruise's height is known as about 5'6'' or 170 cm...

But with help of plateform shoes Mr Green and with camera tricks, Tom appears taller than Koyuki when I see the trailer... Mr Green

Yep, he's definitely shorter than her and yes I've also seen the trailer. He looked slightly taller than Koyuki but still lucky her-got the chance to be paired up with Hollywood superstar Mr Green It doesn't require tall figure to be superstar! Applaud what you need is talent and lots of lucks!

I just saw the trailer for "Last Samurai" yesterday when I watched Matrix Revolutions at Odaiba.

My first impression is mixed; I'm a history buff, so seeing a movie that twists history (Last Samurai is clearly based on the Satsuma Rebellion) is painful (I couldn't really bear to watch Pearl Harbour). Besides, if this movie follows history, then we all know the the ultimate outcome of the Satsuma Rebellion ends in disaster for the samurai; it was after this battle that Japan got wholeheartedly into the modernization of their military aspect.

On the other hand, this should be a good roaring action flick to watch. Smile And yes, I thought the Japanese actress paired up with Tom Cruise's character looked familiar, but didn't realize who it was until I read about it on this forum.

This movie comes out in Japan on 06 December.

As for different version of Kill Bill in Japan -- yup, it's confirmed. There are no black-and-white scenes in Kill Bill, and audiences in Japan got to see a whole lot more gore than American audiences.

Well, the story is that in order to be released in the States with an R rating rather than an NC-17 rating, the movie had to cut down on the gore and make the huge battle scene black and white. Whether this is true or not, I'm not sure.

What I can tell you is that I saw both the American version and the Japanese version, and I can confirm that they are, indeed, different. There are more scenes in the Japanese version, and there are no black and white scenes (except the beginning, where you see Uma Thurman's character as the Bride being shot).

Not the first time. Just an attention they want from the movie and then ppl got curious and see the movie, more $$$. "Tom the great almost got killed". Same thing with Mission Impossible 2. He was praised he did his own stunts and got nearly killed at the rock climbing scene. I'd say it's a media trick. To be honest, Hollywood stars are quite chicken compared to the HK stars, most of them do their own stunts. *respect*

Not only the men, but the HK ladies as well. Michelle Yeoh did all her stunts in the 007 flick.

he's still alive? damn...

but yes... I'm actually worried about this movie, the Satsuma Rebellion has a lot of potential for a good movie, afterall it was the final step from feudal Japan to a modern Japan, a world power. And Hollywood WILL mess that up, just like it always does (Pearl Harbour, U-571, etc). Look at the cast on IMDB for example, there's no Rebel leader, no Saigo Takamori. That's like cutting R.E.Lee out of "Gettysburg", or Robert Gould Shaw out of "Glory", heck, or cutting Patton out of "Patton"...

And apart from that, the trailer already reveals terrible errors. Like the japanese infantry charging at the Samurai forces, that's simple crap. IF they're US or european trained they'll form in lines and slaughter the Samurai at 200-300 yards with their rifles, not to mention the artillery barrage, 6 and 12 pounders firing shrapnell and canister. Not a pretty sight.

And well, the Battle of Kagoshima, which ended the Satsuma Rebellion was very short anyway. Of course it was short, men armed mostly with swords, naginatas and bows against repeater rifles and artillery on open ground... no wonder the Samurai lost ~50% of their troops in that battle.

But we won't see anything about that, what we'll see will be a typical Hollywood version of history... I wouldn't be surprised if the rebels in the movie would actually win the fight...

And I pity Koyuki for having to play with Tom... poor her...

fubar...
