I don't know about most of you guys, but it's a pain in the ass to take forever to load up a page only to find one line replies accompanied by massive sig file sizes.

I mean, there's like people with a total of over 750k worth of animated gifs in their sig and not only do they take forever to load, they slowdown the performance of IE.

Every forum I visit strictly enforces sig file sizes except this one.

Any comments, folks?

I guess you're talking to me, neh? Gomen nasai. I'll pare it down.

With that in mind, it's no worse than a page full of 100K-200K (or more) pics that are downloading to your PC, so it's "six of this and a half dozen of the other".... Smile

I think he's more concerned about the file size rather than the actual size of the sig... But an 800x600 sig would be a bit outrageous... hehe

there's actually some sigs/avas here over 1mb Google

That's what I said on another thread, but not in so many technical words.... Thanks, arnel! Applaud Big Grin

But I guess no one trips out (except me) on relatively large pic files on the various pages... Sad

BTW, there is currently 600+ KB of images alone on this page. Also, having a large number of animated GIFs WILL slow your computer down to a halt. Even if it's just 2KB animated GIFs the size of those emoticons.

Yes! Just the animation ITSELF kills my work PC. It is not the size of the file that does it, it's the inability for my lousy video card to handle the animation efficiently (or it could be that plus Internet Exploder lousy handling of web content). Because it isn't my own PC, I can't change anything on the PC (upgrade hardware, switch to Nutscrape, etc.)

I wouldn't say it's just the lousy video card. Even my 2600+ 512meg RAM + GeForceFX 5600 Ultra dies when there're over 100 animated gifs running at the same time.

IF, and that's a big big if, the all the display rendering is passed onto the videocard so it can do actual hardware rendering, then perhaps, it wouldn't matter. But here, each animated GIF is like a new CPU process, and it'll just eat it up little by little.

This along sucks up around 25% of my cpu when there're about 4 animated gifs running, and that goes for both IE and Opera.

On most sites I really dislike animated gifs, so I use a filtering proxy that un-animates them automatically.

But I think that animated gifs on a site like this are kind of fun ... if your PC can handle it.

These days I think all browsers really ought to let you control gif animation. I'm surprised that some browsers still don't let you. It's shocking!

Hey, you should buy one of those wireless network detection boxes... One of my friends has one, and he ended up finding some poor bastard's open wireless network in his neighborhood. He's now surfing the Internet off of it for free!
