Problem is, you can't have chemistry by yourself.
Unless you're doing stand-up.

Or possibly the other way around.

Has she ever worked with Kimutaku before?

The only instance I can remember offhand is when she was a young girl and she played Senna-kun's (Kimura) music student in Long Vacation.

Yeah it might have turned out better, as far as chemistry between the male lead actor and female lead actress. Zannen

"Chemistry" is one of the biggest load of BS by the film/entertainment industry. They're actors. Their job is to act like lovers/love interests/etc. Failing to create that illusion isn't lack of "chemistry"; it's weak acting on both partys. Not a huge fan of Koyuki, but the problem wasn't her, not completely at least. Neither of the adult leads were worth their paycheck in Engine. The kids stole the show, which says something when the script is written specifically to make the star look good in another carbon copy role.

Exactly.
There's probably blame to go all around: the casting and the actors themselves... If there's no teamwork or synergy, all the biggest names in the world can't help.

On-screen chemistry, like the X Factor, is one of those either-you-have-it-or-you-don't intangibles that don't necessarily hinge on acting talent. There's a whole archive of movies/dramas that have so-so actors sharing great chemistry. And as a corollary, there are times when two individually talented actors come together but fail to generate even a scintilla of sparks. (Off the top of my head: Fukatsu Eri and Tsumabuki Satoshi on SLOW DANCE. ) It's a strange little beast, this chemistry, but BS it ain't, IMO.
But I agree that the kid actors were the best thing about ENGINE. Their chemistry with Kimura and with each other--that was gold.

Well fortunately Hirosue has revived her acting career and she is in a steady stream of movies and films for you to enjoy.

I'd chalk that up to luck more than intangibles. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. There's a reason that actors with "chemistry" can't duplicate that even when paired up again.

Hmm, that might be true... Can't think of a movie or drama off-hand that would contradict that....
EDIT: There's Bogart and Bacall....
