Kusanagi, Tanaka to star in drama version of "My Sassy Girl"
Thu, December 13, 2007 (3:32pm EST)

TBS has announced a drama adaptation of the hit 2001 Korean movie "My Sassy Girl," which is known as "Ryokiteki na Kanojo" in Japan. The series will star SMAP's Tsuyoshi Kusanagi and actress Lena Tanaka.

The romantic comedy, which originally starred Cha Tae-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun, was highly successful in Korea, and its popularity quickly spread throughout the rest of Asia. Immediately following its release in Japan in 2003, multiple television networks reportedly began fighting over drama adaptation rights. However, it wasn't until Kusanagi was attached to the project that a deal was made this past spring.

The character backgrounds and plot details will be changed for the drama. While the protagonists in the original film were college students, this time the pair will be a marine biology professor (Kusanagi) and an aspiring writer (Tanaka).

Nao Matsushita, Emi Suzuki, Yoshie Ichige, Nahomi Matsushima, Shosuke Tanihara, and Takaya Kamikawa have also been announced as cast members.

Hidenori Iyoda is producing, and Yuji Sakamoto is handling the script. Filming already started earlier this month, with the series scheduled to premiere in April.

Hmm, I saw the original Korean movie years ago and liked it well enough, but I had no idea that a J-drama was in the works for it!

I just really hope that the drama does a better job of portraying how crazy the female lead is than the American movie version.

That's good to hear. Thanks Takoyama. :-)

The rating for the first episode is 13.5, not high but not low either.
Gokusen 3 first episode rating was 26.4. That's just crazy. I guess a lot of Japanese still want to see GTO type of drama? They should have made another series of GTO actually.

The first episode was pretty good. The rhythm and flow was a little bit awkward at the beginning, and it was trying too hard to be funny in a few scenes, but overall it was fun. The poignant scenes were well acted, and Tanaka Rena was good when she was being abusive too. Looking forward to next week's episode. ^^

it's not actually about the drama the reason why the rating was so high is b'coz of the boys a lot of them has many fans across japan, the same thing happened also in Gokusen 2 actually majority of the audience are girls (fangirls) of kat-tun at that time, but this time i guess it's hey say7 or most of the boys are product of Johnny's Entertaiment. co'z if you're gonna observe story wise it's too cliche nothing different from before, so i think it's not b'coz of the drama.

I had completely forgotten about this drama until I checked the drama thread over at Soompi just a while ago. Just started the download so I probably won't be able to watch it until tomorrow. I really enjoyed the movie, so I'm eager to see how this version turns out.

I just got watching the first episode, without subs, but I agree that there were parts where it looked like they were trying too hard to be funny. Nice to see some of the familiar scenes here and from what I've seen it looks like Tanaka Rena acts with the right mix of seriousness and sheer wackiness to be that sassy girl Victory! Peace! Now I just need subtitles...
