Actress Sandra Bullock (news) donated $1 million to the American Red Cross (news - web sites) to help relief efforts for countries affected by the deadly tsunami.

Bullock, 40, also donated $1 million to the organization after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

wow, that's pretty generous of her. considering she was never one of those commanding big box ofc bucks. and she's 40?!? Shocked no way!

ha, i didn't even know that.

if there's any kind of positive story about that tsunami, it would have to be the one that i read on cnn about a 10yr old british girl who saved a hundred or so people from the tsunami. only a few weeks earlier, she had done a science project on tsunamis and when she saw the water recede like it did, she told her mom, and they rushed everyone off of the beach. it was one of the ONLY beaches that no one died on. what a great story.

For you news watchers of the tsunami disaster... PACOM (Pacific Command), the command that I work under at Pearl Harbor and Camp Smith, put up a web portal documenting the efforts of the U.S. armed forces in the humanitary effort:

http://www.pacom.mil/special/0412asia/

There, you can obtain high-resolution maps of the region, news conferences from The Pentagon, and much more. The site should be accessible from all parts of the world.

BERLIN (AFP) - Seven-time world Formula One champion Michael Schumacher of Germany has donated 10 million dollars to the victims of last week's Asian tsunamis, his manager Willi Weber said during a German telethon.

"The dawning of the New Year has not been as joyful for us this year because of the catastrophe in Asia. We sympathise with the victims in their grief," Schumacher said.

The death toll from the massive December 26 earthquake and resulting tidal waves around the Indian Ocean neared 146,000 Tuesday.

bmwracer: that link was pretty intense. the picture of Banda Aceh Shore was a pretty good depiction of how devastating that tsunami was.

At first, I saw no difference in the first picture besides the water, but then as I moved on... green turned to brown, and everything was destroyed... Very sad... Shake Head

Yeah, picture number five is pretty shocking: a small island area, green, with homes and stuff, then everything is wiped clean by the tsunami... Unbelievable.

Folks will do anything to get a buck.

Don't know if this is true or not, but if it is, it's damn pathetic.

From: USAMITC AdminSvcs
Subject: Tsunami Fraud Alert

Washington, D.C. 20535-0001

FBI NATIONAL PRESS OFFICE
IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(202) 324-3691
JANUARY 5, 2005

TSUNAMI DISASTER RELIEF FRAUD ALERT

Washington, D.C. - The FBI today is alerting the public to
a variety of scams currently being facilitated online involving the
solicitation of additional relief funds for the victims of the recent
Tsunami disaster. The FBI, through the Internet Crime Complaint
Center (IC3), has received reports of websites being established
purportedly to assist with collection and relief efforts. Complaints
submitted to the IC3 have identified several schemes that involve both
unsolicited in-coming emails (SPAM), as well as reports of responses
to posted email addresses, to assist for a fee, in locating loved ones
who may have been a victim of the disaster. A fraudulent relief
donation website has also been detected containing an imbedded Trojan
exploit which can infect the user's computer with a virus if accessed.

The FBI, in conjunction with domestic with international law
enforcement and industry partners, take seriously these egregious
actions and are resolved to aggressively pursuing those who would
attempt to victimize philanthropic individuals.

The IC3 is cautioning citizens against participating in this type of
on-line correspondence. Consistent with previous guidance on
incidents of Phishing/Spoofing and Identity Theft, when considering
on-line options for providing funding to this relief effort consumers
should consider the following:

Do not respond to any unsolicited (SPAM) incoming emails.
Be skeptical of individuals claiming to be surviving victims or
foreign government officials asking for help in placing large sums of
money in overseas bank accounts.
To ensure that contributions to U.S. based non-profit organizations
are used for intended purposes, go directly to recognized charities
and aid organizations websites, as opposed to following a link to
another site.
Attempt to verify the legitimacy of non-profit organizations by
utilizing various Internet based resources which may assist in
confirming the existence of the organization as well as its non-profit
status.
Be leery of emails that claim to show pictures of the disaster areas
in attached files, as the files may contain viruses. Only open
attachments from know senders.

Several variations of this scam are currently in circulation. Anyone
who has received an email referencing the above information or anyone
who may have been a victim of this or a similar incident should notify
the IC3 via the website, www.ic3.gov.

It's hard to believe what a large number of lost lives that is. I had to put it into scope of looking at a baseball park that holds about 48,000 people and then imagining more than 4 times that amount of people are gone. Terrible.
