Yes she has a real talent. You should see some of her movies, especially Twilight Samurai if you haven't already done so.

Yes she has a particular talent for playing characters in historical films/period dramas (jidai geki).

You might also like Hana Yori mo Naho, another film, which is not as serious as Twilight Samurai but is also a period film.

Catching up on some Rie Miyazawa movies I had on my hard drive, I recently saw Peony Pavillion (2001), a Chinese film that stars Rie Miyazawa as a Chinese opera singer. Although the film was slow paced it was very well wraught and satisfying. The acting felt like true art.

Rie Miyazawa was absolutely exquisite! Her perforance was captivating and graceful. So beautiful. Joey Wang also gave a remarkable performance in her portrayal. Although I had my reservations about Rie Miyazawa playing a Chinese role she captured the essence of the role quite convincingly. I learned again why I first adored her and continue to.

The costume design was lush and sumptuous and the art direction was a perfect complement to the performances doled out by the movie's stars.

But that book came out long after she became popular as she was already doing commericials and Television, making millions of Yen, as a young teenager....why wait until she was an adult to propogate that lie? You could be right but I am doubtful.

Yeah, I'm rather skeptical as well... Besides, how would being half-Dutch increase the allure/interesst in Santa Fe?

I thought the main selling point was the nudity, particularly the frontal stuff.

Well the Japanese do have a fascination with "hafu" ~ ppl of mixed descent...but she was already wildly popular making tons and tons of money prior to the release of that photobook....so she was already a media darling. As you said, the risque photos of someone so popular and visible in Japanese entertainement were the draw, I think. I still think that was the best selling photobook of all time in Japan.

Yup.

I remember the wave of interest was so huge that it was even reported on Entertainment Tonight back in '91/'92... I think I even recorded that show.

Yeah well back then she was at the zenith of her popularity and there were less media outlets, Internet, etc....so TV and publishing were king....

The ratings for doramas was generally much higher then, compared to now.
