Actually he doesnt die orelse they wouldnt have been able to film the two special movies after the ending of the final epsoide of food fight. One was shown in singapore where he went to hong kong and particpated in the food fight competiton there. The other which i read on the web is about him and the orphange's children being stuck on the train and a bomb had been planted on it. And he had to participate in the competition to defuse the bomb. Hpefully this would have help you question.

That's what the first special is about...the wife tries to find him to compete in the food fight again and on Mitsuru's journey to find out who he is, he finds a (I'm assuming Singaporean or Chinese) girl who looks exactly like Fukada Kyoko.......the second special I haven't seen yet though.......

some spoilers sorta. the specials can be found on tudou but only with chinese subs. and omg kusanagi croaked i tink..i dont know! ahh the 2nd special makes me confused!
