In other (potentially) depressing news, the Boston Red Sox bid US$51.1 million (yes, million) for the rights to sign Japanese pitching phenom Matsuzaka Daisuke. Call it a hunch, but I think the $51.1 million is larger than the entire payroll of many teams. Don't forget, there's also a possible contract in their. The bidding money would go Matsuzaka's former team, Seibu Lions, if a contract is reached.
That's a lot of udon! Assuming the Red Sox sign him, can you imagine the pressure Matsuzaka's going to be under to perform? And having to deal with those psycho Red Sox fans as well?

The mega-million pissing contest between the Red Sox and Yankees continues:
NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees won the bidding for Japanese pitcher Kei Igawa when the Hanshin Tigers accepted their offer of about $26 million Tuesday.
After the bidding closed Monday, the Tigers were informed of the amount of the high bid, but not which team made it. The New York Mets bid about $15 million for Igawa, a baseball official said on condition of anonymity because the amounts of losing bids are not disclosed.

Well if he ended up with the Yanks, he'd have to deal with King George.
Kei Igawa is one of the best left-handed starters in Japan, but I doubt he can survive in the major league level. I've watched few Hanshin Tigers games and he's not as dominant as Matsunaka. Probably a #4-5 starter for Yankees at best.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Reliever Eric Gagne and the Texas Rangers reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday on a one-year contract worth about $6 million.
The agreement was confirmed by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made. The deal would allow Gagne to earn about $5 million more in performance bonuses.
Looks like the Dodgers are going to stick with Saito-oh

NARITA, Japan - Hanshin Tigers left-hander Kei Igawa left
Wednesday for New York to sign a five-year, $20 million deal with the
New York Yankees.
''I will have a medical checkup and help finalize talks on a
formal contract,'' he said at a news conference before his departure
from Narita airport. ''It hasn't hit me yet.''
Don't worry Igawa-san, Steinbrenner will hit you soon enough!

I was so happy to hear that the Giants signed Zito. I didn't want my Yankees to even consider him..... Now, only if we can get rid of Johnson for some young arms...:-) _________________

TONY GWYNN AND CAL RIPKEN ELECTED TO HALL OF FAME
The former Baltimore Orioles shortstop said he was both relieved and euphoric. If he had been picked by two of the eight voters who didn't select him, he would have set the percentage record -- but he didn't mind.
"All I wanted to hear was, `You're in,"' Ripken said during a conference call. "I really didn't get caught up with wanting to be unanimous or wanting to be the most."
Gwynn received 532 votes for 97.61 percent, the seventh-highest ever, also trailing Ty Cobb, George Brett and Hank Aaron.
"It's an unbelievable feeling to know that people think that what you did was worthy," Gwynn said. "For me, it's kind of validation. The type of player that I was doesn't get a whole lot of credit in today's game."
2 class acts all the way. Even when the Padres sucked I would go watch them play the Dodges just so I could see Tony Gwynn hit

Hmmm, I had forgotten about that. It was funny to see that Mark "Steriods? What are Steroids?" McGwire only got about 24% of the votes needed for induction.
