btw, Wasn't it the English who put sugar in their tea? I think I remember reading that in elementary school. But if I'm wrong, well hey, everyone knows what kind of student I was anyway. Beaten

No, no, ahochaude . . . but, you're almost there. It's all about how the English say stuff like "hear, hear!" and that they also have tea time and, so . . . O.K. Sorry.

Shameless bump! LOL! hehe

I finally got a new computer. I decided to go with eMachines. I got a discontinued model, I had to chase it down! The reason I did this is because the model they replaced this with is an inferior computer, albeit very slightly. Here are some specs, although I don't know what *some* even mean, lol:

eMachines T3265
AMD Athlon 3200+ Xp processor w/ Quantispeed Architecture
160 GB ATA Hard Drive (one slot for another hard drive for later Mr Green)
CD-ROM (bay 1)
DVD +/- RW (4x) CD-RW (16x) (combo drive, so the CD-RW is slower than the current standard..) (bay 2)
512 MB DDR SDRAM (one more slot for another ram stick later Wink )
5 USB ports
Video: NVIDIA GeForce4
Audio: nForce 6-channel
Internal floppy drive (these f***ers are hard to find now!)

Basically I got everything but the monitor for $649. Sure, it's not as spiffy as some of what's out there now and it's not Athlon 64 bit, but for the price and what I need, I think I did ok! Plus, it's definitely gotta be better than the 3.5+ year computer I have now hehe Although this one lasted quite a bit, and I'm still moving out of it, so my new eMachines is still in the box Google

Congrats, KS! Applaud Hope your transition to the new machine is problem free... Big Grin

I'm thinking about upgrading myself: I've been scoping out CPU-motherboard combos, DVD burners, and more memory.... Smile

you can change styles in the administration console, there should be a link to it if you're logged in as the administrator.

Alternatively you can download templates created by other people, just visit the phpBB homepage for a whole database of them.

PostPosted: Tue Jun 22, 2004 9:02 am    Post subject: Need info on dvdr burner! Reply with quote Back to top

I'm looking to buy a dvd and cd combo burner. But I don't know what all the technicalities mean.
What does single/dual layer mean?
What is the difference between the speed for DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW?

Also, what brands of dvdr disc is good?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Big Grin

I would recommend the Pioneer DVR-107D. Can't go wrong with the leader in DVD burners Bleah

As for dual and single layer, I'm not too sure myself but isn't dual layer 2 layers of a DVD in 1 so basically it's twice as big? Single should just be your normal standard DVDs. The + or - is just the type of DVD media. Both are usually compatible with any DVD-Rom and I believe pretty much all new burners will write on both + or -.

More than likely the burner you'll buy will be single layer. I think dual layer is like....movie DVD's you buy in stores. I think dual layer burners are out or coming out, but they'll probably be damn expensive for a while Sweat

I'm not sure what your question about speed is for the formats, but I think all DVD burners now do both +R and -R. I think -R is most common for people to use and want.

DVD-R brands....hmm. Basically many of the same for CD-R brands. I like: Imation, Ridata/Ritek (made by TDK I think), Verbatim, Memorex, Sony, Fuji, etc.

single layer = DVD 5, 4.7 gb
dual layer = DVD 9, twice as big as DVD 5.

All dvd burners now burn DVD 5 discs. but 90% of factory pressed DVDs that you buy commercially are DVD 9.
DVD+R is pretty fast compared to DVD-R. Read speeds are very fast for DVD+R.
Any rewritable discs such as DVD+RW or -RW will be slow.

DVD-r discs i like: Ritek, Princo (people have mixed feelings about these), Prodisc, Optodisc.
i have had success with all brands. i've burnt thousands of DVDs with my Pioneer A105.

Thanks for the recommendation. I looked at the specifications for this model and I think I want one with a faster cdr speed. Cus right now I have a small desktop that only has one slot for my cdr burner. So when I get the internal dvd+/-rw drive, Im gonna depend on only this drive to burn both cdr and dvdr for me.

I'm thinking about getting:
Optorite 12X DVD+/-RW Drive, Model DD1203
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-182-024&depa=1
or Lite-On Black 8X DVD+/-RW Drive, Model SOHW-812S
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-936&depa=1
or NEC 8X Black DVD+RW/-RW Drive, Model ND-2500A
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-012&depa=1

not sure which one though...

What I don't understand is the difference between the (+) and (-) sign? Why do ppl prefer (-)? I have no clue Crazy

Also what is considered normal price and good price for dvdr?
Thanks for the replies.

Yea I know what you mean about the CD-R speed. It takes forever, well not forever for me to burn CDs so that's why I avoid them and just burn DVDs now. Maybe look into Sony DVD burners as they have a better CD-R read speed but I hear their 8x burner isn't too good. Basically a remake of the Lite-on so it probably isn't worth it. Their 4x burners are pretty stable though from what people say on dvdrhelp
