hmmm, i read all the posts all up from the beginning. Sincerely, i'd go with a 50/50 chance. Both fighters (knight and samurai) have lots of pros and cons, enough to balance evenly. No need to go over all the arguments again about either sword or armor factor. IMO, the whole thread proved that the armor/sword combinaison of each side balances. About the mindset, knight and samurai are similar in goal : kill the other without being killed. The samurai does it for his emperor, the knight for his king. Both samurai and knight are bound by a code of honor (not the same of course, bushido for samurai, etiquette for knight). I believe both to be honorable enough to avoid tricks and going for a neat confrontation. Then it would be up to luck, hence the 50-50 chance.

what do you think about it ?

Sounds about right. Remember, even though there's a fascination about knights and samurai, the bulk were mediocre, and everyone has their ten percent. I'd say only a few were at the master level that most here sees for their side. In fact, judging from the passion vibius has for it, I figure he probably was more skilled than many knights of the time. Same with some of the Japanese sword practicitioners here and the samurai. Armor and weapons are the same. Had to buy your own back then, and quality depended on what you could afford.

I disagree about the tricks though. Remember, both chivalry and bushido were codified during times of peace. They were more really to keep the warrior class looking useful and important when they weren't needed. But when your rear is on the line, hello hidden dagger!

lol, if so, then it goes for both sides, the equation remain the same ^^ 50/50. i was thinking about that point but i figured a combat one-on-one with no by-stander, both sword drawn and ready with a reasonable distance between them (around 20 ft) with no obstacle and no special knowledge of the opponent. I think in that case you can only focus on the opponent, rendering the "hidden dagger" trick rather hard to pull. Otherwise, we'd have to bring in the readiness level of both fighters, the environment composition and where each start and what they know about the environment and their opponent.

I think if the fight is defined as one on one with swords, a master of the craft on either side, using armor of choice, the knight would have more advantages.

He'd probably be about a head taller than the samurai, so he'd have the advantage of height, body mass, strength and reach. These are all advantageous in a fight, especially a swordfight. Sure, I've seen plenty of smaller guys win bouts, but in general, other things being equal, I think the bigger guy has a natural advantage.

But when you add in the plate armor and shield, he's going to be very well protected from a katana. The katana could even be a disadvantage if it gets stuck in the knight's shield.

So I go with the knight. Rakushou!

the samurai is a strong caractor but wold easily die at the hands of the knight because of their light weight armor but they anr more mobile than the knight but it is like attacking a tank with a twig but the samurai is known to get to know their enemy whilst the knight is attack on contactso the samurai will have more of an advantage but as you said tough call

I've read through this entired thread, and through carefully weighing all of that which was said about both the samurai, and the knight. My money is on the knight, don't get me wrong, I think that samurai are very cool, but you just gotta weigh all the pros going for the knight, which there are very many. All those who don't think that I knight does not possess any skill, or are basically walking tanks are sadly mistaken.

Anyway, onto the present discussion, naked mole rats? Well, maybe if they were NAKED (JUICE) mole rats... but come on...

Everyone knows that the most feared beasts on earth are the Megazostrodon, the Marmoset, and the Collared Peccary! w00t!

Catch you later,

KNIGHTS vs SAMARAI

i have to go with the knights on this for several reasons

1- the knights armor was a lot lighter than ppl think- ranging from 30-60 lbs. not to mention its flexibilty, as the armor was pretty much a metallic mold of the knights body.

2- the armor was strong. the first FIREARMS could not penetrate the armor. neither could crossbows, regular bows, swords, etc could penetrate it, very far from easily

3- the knights could also adapt farely well to warfare- they had MANY enemies everywhere, where as the samarai faught themselves and were not used to any other fighting styles.

4- the knights also had formation warfare. unless kamakazi was a type of formation, then forgtet wut i said.

5- the samarai armor was bulky, weak, infelxible, an heavy- ranging anywhere from 45-77 lbs.- but none of this is new info of course

thats all i have to say for now

we have to remember that Knights were very good to use a sword and had a good range when they are on their horse...
